Latch Recall

Recommended Posts

Looks like there is another recall is coming.

DETROIT (AP) -- Ford is recalling about 830,000 vehicles in the U.S. and Mexico because parts in the side door latches can break and the doors can open while the vehicles are moving.

The recall announced Thursday covers certain 2013 to 2015 Ford Escape SUVs and C-Max cars, and 2012 to 2015 Focus cars. Also included are 2014 to 2016 Ford Transit Connect vans, and Ford Mustang sports cars and Lincoln MKC SUVs from 2015.

Just to be more clear from homestead's link http://finance.yahoo.com/news/ford-recalls-830k-vehicles-fix-130748913.html

"States included are Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, Oregon and Washington."

I wonder how much heat is 'too much', leading to a failure?

I pose the question for used cars that were originally titled as rental vehicles in one of those states, then resold at auction elsewhere after a year.

I'm under the impression that a lot of early C-MAX vehicles went to car-rental agencies. When I first started searching for a C-MAX in early 2014, there were dozens of used  2013 "Special Order" cars that were originally sold in Florida (based on Monroney Sticker info and/or the CarFax reports).

Supposedly, "Ford plans to launch a corresponding customer satisfaction program for vehicles outside the scope of this recall. For example, if a vehicle exhibits a broken door latch, Ford will provide a one-time replacement at no charge for the life of the vehicle." per the consumer reports link above.

Also, my car spent about 34 months in the Phoenix area and now over 9 months in TN.  Like you say "how much heat is too much".  I assume Ford has access to where the vehicles were titled and of course their own service records.  So, we'll see if my 34 months is enough time in AZ to get the letter.

  • 4 weeks later...

Ford Motor Company is expanding a previously announced safety recall regarding door latches to include approximately 1,500,000 additional vehicles at the request of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, bringing the total to 2,383,292 vehicles. Affected vehicles include 2013-15 Ford C-MAX ....

It appears the regional restrictions listed in original recall notice (sunbelt and Pacific coast states) have been changed...my 2013 CMax purchased in Illinois now shows this recall on Ford's site.

Ford ETIS lists this for me:

16S30 - DOOR LATCH REPLACEMENT

Does anyone know if this includes the rear liftgate?  I just had mine in the dealer yesterday for the liftgate not latching.  Cost me $150 to get it fixed.  Although, they did tell me to keep the receipt that here "might" be a recall on the latches coming soon ... REALLY?!?!

Announced recall seems to be for the regular people doors.  Defects that directly affect safety are much more likely to get a recall than other problems.

Still it is wise to keep receipts for expensive repairs.  And tail-gate latch failure could be held to be a safety problem later (could allow exhaust fume entry).

Me too. LOL :)

Me three!  That's about how long it will take to hit the 250k mile goal - and prove false that silly stuff about "batteries die at 100k and leave your car worthless."

Edit: I see the recall is now on owner.ford.com for my car but says:

  • Status: 12 - RECALL INCOMPLETE. REMEDY NOT YET AVAILABLE.

I'll keep the seat belts on!  Reminds me though of my first helicopter ride - sadly, a search for bodies after a bad flood.  They took a group of us down river in a Huey helicopter, leaving the sliding side doors open!  There we go, banking through turns, with nothing below but God's green earth!  Wow, what a fun ride.  Just wish it hadn't been necessary!
