More issues with my 2016 Cmax

I've had this car 13 months now, been without it for nearly a month earlier this year while my dealer chased down multiple water leaks on the roof and in the hatch area. Now I'm getting a yellow wrench light. Taking it to the dealer again. I just had the oil changed and they updated the computer with a new program based on a recall notice. I only have 5200 miles on this car, and I'm very disappointed in it from a quality and reliability perspective. Especially being so far down the road in its product cycle.

Almost four years (47 months).  Four oil changes, one warranty claim for screen failing - all free of charge, not a single penny - oh, wait I did buy two little screws once for 59 cents or something like that.  Great fast service from Pierre Ford in Seattle.  Ours well built and very reliable. :jump_earth:

Hope your issues resolve quickly CMax16,

Low miles Nick

AZgman, you should open up your hatch and take a good look at the body panels on each side of the hatch, and around the hinges on top. This is where the sheet metal is welded together. If you see any gaps in between the welds or around the hinges, you will probably have a place where water can get in. The problem with this, is water incursions can happen and run under the interior panels. It will then pool up around the battery area, which is not a good thing. We also had leaks under the black trim piece on the roof, which can only be found by running water around it, then removing it. we live in Seattle, so we didn't notice it until the rainy season hit.

Just talked to my dealer, they acknowledged the lights, but can't seem to do anything about it. They will keep it a few days to see if they can replicate it. Frustrating.

We like the car itself a lot, comfortable, easy to drive etc, but if these issues keep coming up, I'm not going to put up with it. Ford can and should do better than this.

Ask the dealer for the Diagnostic Trouble Codes that triggered the check engine light or better yet spend about $30 for an ELM327 and the ForScan App  to check for DTCs yourself.  You can also monitor real time data. :)   IMO, it's worth it just to monitor tire pressure.

They are good to have but you can also take it to some auto parts stores and they will pull the code for you for free.   Just another option.

I don't understand why the dealer said they can not find anything?   They should have the code generated that turned on the wrench light.   I think I had this on mine some time ago and the code was related to the fuel system.   Some have stated that it was a seal issue with the gas inlet.   I remember just pushing and releasing the flap in gas inlet a bunch of times.  The light never came back on for that.  My car was fairly new then too.  This might not be your problem but the code should help find out what area is the concern.

I have had a few issues but mine has been a good car.   I too started following the this forum before I bought the car and was concerned about the problems reported.  One day I decided to look at the Prius and Volt forums to see if problems were less frequent there.   Boy was I wrong.  Many many problems reported and they have very good customer satisfaction.     What I took away from that was that all cars have some problems and people generally report problems but generally do not post that they are happy with the car.  I hope they fix your issues and your C-Max gets more reliable.  It is a great fun car.  Good luck

Thanks for the advice, i appreciate it!    Picking it up tonight.   The dealer essentially told me that they can't diagnose it unless the light comes on while it's in the shop, which I just don't understand.   I find it hard to understand that Ford would engineer this thing to light up a trouble light and record codes that don't point to the problem.   Guess we need to just drive it into the ground, and hope it doesn't got into "limp mode" on the freeway.

I had a chance to go back to the dealer after picking the car up, since they didn't adjust the windshield wipers correctly when they put the car back together (they were touching each other).   It gave me a chance to talk to the mechanic who worked on the car.   I asked him to explain to me how they went about working on this particular issue.   He explained that the codes give them a "general idea" of the area causing the issue.   In my case it was pointing them to the area under the cowl, near the windshield.   He unplugged, cleaned and re-seated all of the connectors in the area, in hopes that this would fix the issue.   He further explained that the electrical tolerances in our cars are so narrow,  that the least bit of variance can trigger the light to come on.   He then complained that Ford Warranty doesn't give the mechanics much time to search around on issues like this, because they don't want to rack up any more charges under warranty than they have to, so it's sometimes frustrating to the shop, because they can't spend much time on these types of problems.

If that's the case, they must've been flipping out over the charges they incurred while this car was in the body shop for 3 weeks, as they looked for all of the water leaks, HA!

  • 2 weeks later...

I've had my C-Max 4+ years now.  Early on I had the water leak issue.  It was a rubber seal on the back hatch door around where the electric cable passes through.  It just needed to be seated properly and sealed.  Water would pour into the door when it rained.  No problems since.

Haven't had any other issues with car.  The best commute car I've ever owned - love it.  I've had Hondas for the past 20 years.
