willinnc
Hi,2nd posting in this area - The image coming to our screen in the C-MAX from the backup camera is blurry and out of focus. Is there a way to remedy this? I do not know if this is from water inside the camera housing or if the camera's focus is out of whack. Thanks for any help! stolenmoment
I bought used, and I suspect that my camera was pointed at the Sun for a while, it's always washed-out. However, cleaning the lens *does* help.
kyledamron1
I recommend cleaning off the lens... that seems to help with mine. It has some blurriness as well. But it definitely gets better when it gets cleaned. And you have to do that often since the back gets so dirty.
willinnc
Thanks for the help. I will see if I can get it clear by cleaning the exterior lens.
jestevens
The entire back of the car seems to suck up dirt, I guess because of the way the body is styled to improve aerodynamic performance. I've had to clean my lens (or just take the entire car for a bath) more than once per weather season. I guess it's possible the CCD could be damaged by exposure to the sun if it was severe/long enough but I think it's a glass lens.
camachito
Folks!I tried doing all your recommendations and the blurriness/white halo didn't improve. Took it to the local FORD dealer where I purchased it about 1-2 weeks ago....I am still waiting for them to call me and tell me the camera has arrived. BTW, I asked and they didn't tell me if they were covering the cost since I had just purchased the car USED 2 weeks earlier. Long story short, I ordered a USED tailgate handle in BLACK. All the switches, lights AND camera included for $80. I am a little handy so I got the part today.....and pulled off the door trim which was too easy. Six nuits holding the handle in place, left the old wiring in place and reattached the new black handle. Panels snapped back in place......lights, switches and CAMERA work. Upside: Saved a lot of cash....The new handle is a lovely accent.......making my C-Max unique in the Orlando area. Downside: Camera is same part number as mine broken one... the close-Up feature doesn't work! I can live with that! Oh...I had purchased one of the camera's listed for the 2017 C-Max letter ending "C" for $80...it worked with the same limitation (no close-up feature) and fits perfectly in the handle. camachito
Addendum: Those Park Assist lines that guide you in reverse (move with the steering) don't work either. :-( Still all in all I can see again backing up...guidelines are still there and sensors warn of proximity. I guess it's pretty much a mixed bag of results!

I guess it's pretty much a mixed bag of results! The colored lines as pictured are not the lines that are intended to move with the steering. There are two WHITE lines that will show, flanking those colored lines, WHEN ENABLED via the control panel settings to the right of the speedometer or somewhere in the head units settings. Look there for the option and enable if desired. Edited July 21, 2018 by icanhazc-max Noah Harbinger
QuandAns42
Curious if you were able to see any signs of damage on the old camera when you took it out? Anything at all to suggest what the cause of the original problem was? Obviously the camera being on the back of the vehicle it will attract dirt and need to be cleaned, but if there really was an issue with the focus that would be very interesting. If the chip was damaged by sun exposure, does it not have a shutter to protect against that damage? Cameras without user-serviceable manual controls to adjust these things certainly create a significant point of failure!
ptjones
I also have this problem and slowly getting worse over the years since new. I took it out(big job) and it is a sealed unit so it can only be replaced to fix it. I didn't want to spend the money so I live with it. stolenmoment
Mine was rather foggy when I bought the car used, I might guess it was from sun exposure, but I have no way of knowing.

ptjones
My backup camera system isn't working at all, it must be a computer problem, there is nothing on the screen at all. It did this before, but came back in a few days. It hasn't been working for a week or so now. I really don't want to spend any money on it. I hope my FEHPlugin will come in by Sept. Don't know how much longer MADMAX can go, 252K mi. now. Paul
fbov
Have you tried pulling the fuse for the camera? FWIW, new Escapes have a backup camera issue. Mine's crapped out once the same way others on the Escape forum describe (noise pattern on screen), but only once. Frank
ptjones
No, but I will check it out. Thanks I looked and I can't find a fuse listed for the camera. Paul Edited June 18, 2020 by ptjones
plus 3 golfer
Try F31 in the rear junction box behind panel on left wall in hatch area. Make sure you check for continuity of the fuse with ohm meter and that there is 12 Volts on hot side of fuse with car on. ptjones
Checked a couple of fuses and they were fine and had 12.5 volts. I'm thinking it has to be a computer that gets steering input because backup lines aren't showing up on the screen. Paul

Not to be pedantic, but... did you pull the fuse and leave it out a few minutes for everything to discharge before replacing? We called it PO/PO, power off, power on, during my time in testing services. I never questioned if the fuse was operational, rather suggesting it as a means of removing power from the subsystem so that any associated electronics had to reset, akin to the Fuse 79 Radio problem. ptjones
Well a day later and my camera is working again. So it went without working atleast 10 days and now it's working for several tries for a day. Don't know what's changed. Paul
C-MaxA2
Paul - that camera is trolling you... Now it will shut down for a week or two just to confuse you. My garage door opener has been teasing me for a couple of years with the 'it works, it doesn't work' routine. Replacing the opener next week. Enough of the games... ptjones

ptjones
Thinking of getting a 2017 CMAX Energi for the time being. I would like to get up to speed with a plugin. I have so many ideas to try. Paul
