derh2o
I tow my 2018 C-Max and have a question no one seems to be able to answer. The manual says that one needs to start the car each morning (when towing) and let the engine run for 1 minute. That sounds great, but after about 15 seconds, the ICE (internal combustion engine) shuts down changing to hybrid mode thereby not allowing me to run it for 1 minute. How doing I keep the ICE running?
markd
Put your foot on the gas pedal and press.
derh2o
Yes, I understand that, but what happens is the ICE shuts down after about 15 seconds. The question is, how do I keep it running.
Bill-N
I believe you press the pedal to the floor and hold it.
markd
It's always worked for me.
derh2o
I must be missing something here. I know you may need to depress the pedal to the floor to start the ICE, but if I depressed it for 1 minute the RPM would increase too high. Let me rephrase my question. I depress the pedal to start the ICE running. Then I take my foot off the pedal. What sometimes happens is the ICE stops running before the 1 minute is up (sometimes only 15 seconds) and is operating on the battery. I believe I am supposed to let the ICE run for 1 minute. I hope this clarifies my question. Thanks for trying to help.
plus 3 golfer
Keep the pedal to the floor. RPM will not go to high.
SnowStorm
Couldn't you just turn on the heat? That should keep a cold engine running. Redshift
derh2o
I will experiment on these 2 ideas. It is just surprising the manual does not make mention of this issue. Thanks again for the suggestions.
Redshift
Turning on the heat will definitely keep the engine running. Set it for a high temp and the engine will run for quite a while.
jmckinley
Amen on turning up the heat. Flooring the accelerator pedal just makes it do funky things and eventually shutting off anyway.Just turn the heat up all the way. I let mine run for 5 minutes.Over 30,000 towed miles and no problems so far.
derh2o
OK, I just towed the C-Max yesterday and turning on the heat or A/C does keep the ICE running. I have yet to try pushing the pedal all the way to the floor, but will try that soon. Thanks to all who gave me their thoughts.
jestevens
People here at work with icy windows used to complain about the hybrid's desire to suppress running the heater/engine until I pointed out the MAX DEFROST button? If you want the engine to run instantly and for a long time you can use that. If you want engine to cycle off and on I would just use regular auto set on a high temperature range as already mentioned.
