Car not recognizing fob, randomly shutting off while driving

Recommended Posts

I originally posted about this in the keys and alarms thread because I thought it was an issue with my fob, but I think I may have something seriously wrong with my car and I’m not sure what it could be. Last time I took it in, the Ford dealership could not find an issue. The issues were not as frequent, so I can understand why they couldn’t replicate the problem. However, they’re becoming more and more frequent and I have no idea what to do. The issues I’ve been experiencing are:

- Car has been having problems recognizing my fob. None of the buttons will work at least once a day and it takes a minute to get my car started because it gives me the “no key detected” error message. When it does finally recognize it, the check engine light comes on and I can’t get the car to move. I have to press the start/stop button again to get it fully started. This morning the error message “starting system failure” or something to that extent popped up. This is the first time I’ve seen this error message. I bought a brand new fob from the dealership a couple of months ago and my old fob which is now my spare has a brand new battery in it.

- Going along with the fob issues, when I get out after turning off the car, it sometimes won’t let me lock it. Recently, it works fine but then later I can’t get it unlocked again and I have to use the manual key. I’ve stopped trying to lock my car after being locked out twice for a couple of reasons. The first being I can’t get the key to turn in the lock, even using the slot in the fob for it to fit into for extra leverage, so I have to ask for help which isn’t always available. The second is once I do get it unlocked, the key makes the car alarm go off and since I have to be at work at 5:30am, I don’t want to set off the alarm that early in the morning and wake up my neighbors. Once I get it started after being locked out, my information display is on a different screen than the one I left it on. When my new fob was programmed they must’ve updated some system in my car because the display was completely different and it wasn’t that they selected a different display, the options to choose from were all different but when I set off the alarm and go to start it again, it resets to how it was before I got a new fob.

- My car sometimes shuts off while I’m driving it. The first time it was after I hit a huge bump in the road without slowing down (my fault), but after I got it started back up again I didn’t notice anything wrong. I got a routine oil change shortly after that which included “the works” where they rotated tires and looked at everything to make sure it was in tip top shape. They found nothing, so I didn’t think much of it. Then it would start shutting off after hitting small bumps. Dealership still found nothing wrong, so I thought it was some weird loose connection with the battery. Had the 12V battery replaced and things were fine for a few weeks. Now my car shuts off at least once a week while I’m just driving down the road, with nothing triggering it. My trick to get it to turn back on was just to open the door. Somehow that triggered my car to turn back on and I would go about my day. Today, however, once I shut the door it turned back off again. Normally, the error message pops up and leaves so quickly I don’t get to read it, but once it said something about the oil pressure and today I swear it said something about park assist but I could be mistaken. My car is not equipped with park assist so I think I am mistaken. It could’ve been something about my tire pressure because the light came on along with the check engine light. Once I finally got it started and ready to drive again, both lights turned off. It did take a few times of opening and closing the door to get it going, though.

I have a 2013 C-Max SEL hybrid with approximately 63,000 miles on it. I bought it used back in February and the start of the issues happened a few months after. I bought it at a used car lot and did not get an extended warranty which ended up screwing me over big time. The carfax on it was clean and had been at two dealerships prior to being at the car lot, so I figured it was reliable since the two dealerships are reputable and service their incoming cars with close attention to details. That doesn’t mean the car lot didn’t mess with it and I’ve definitely learned my lesson from that one. Once I find a backup car to drive I am dropping it off at the local Ford dealership and having them drive it for a while to find the issues. Until then, does anybody have an idea on what these issues could be?
