ptjones Posted January 7, 2013 Report Share Posted January 7, 2013 I compared my ScanGauge WT numbers to the CMax water temperature gauge. It turns out that the bottom line on the CMax WT gauge represents 140 degrees F. The middle line represents 178 - 211 degrees F (211 was the highest I could get the ScanGauge to go to at 80mph on the highway! and ruined the c**p out of my mileage!). I do find it odd that the gauge did not move for 31 degrees. The outside temperature was 54 degrees F, Wednesday we are to reach 63 and will try again. Keep in mind that I have both grill covers installed. I mentioned earlier about the Hotline Assistance Request and here it is:To emphasize "The thermostat is fully open at 202 degrees, so normally the engine should be approximately 202-212 degrees (again depending on the conditions present and if the engine is operating at that time.)" A 50/50 mixture of water/coolant at 21 psi boils at approx 285 degrees F. Note: The coolant reservoir cap has 21 psi stamped on the top. plus 3 golfer Posted January 7, 2013 Report Share Posted January 7, 2013 There's likely a dead band range in the temperature gauge. VW has had such for quite a few years. Last I knew, the VW temp gauge has a deadband such that when the coolant temp is between about 167*F and 225*F, the gauge will read a rock solid 190*F. Looks like Ford has similar. I was wondering what the actual temperatures were at the first mark and mid way mark on the gauge. So anything below the midway mark will be sub-optimal operating temperature. I think you said the thermostat does not open until 190. It would also seem that even with grill covers in place hitting the optimal temperature takes a while. That would seem to account for my observation that short trips give low mpg #s when it is cold. I have observed that I need at least 10 miles of steady driving to start showing mileage gains. I will keep on testing. Shipped first grill cover set to Plus 3 Golfer and he should have them Wednesday. Should have some results soon. Hoping to ship two more tomorrow. bymaine Posted January 8, 2013 Report Share Posted January 8, 2013 I know Chinto is experiencing similar cold weather like New England, and my temps are rarely hold steady in the mid range, unless I am highway driving for 10 solid minutes as well. With my foamed grills, I have seen warmer and steadier temps. "My view" is set with power on the left and the engine temp on the right. I have a set of grillcovers coming soon, (looking forward to replacing the insulation on the pipes in the basement)...Nice to know the corresponding temps for our hashmarks, thank you ptjones for all your research and trials.
