  1. I too find the "courtesy wipe" ineffective (especially if there is salty mist that accumulates on a now dry windshield right before the courtesy smear...I mean wipe).

I am not aware of any option in the on-dash display setting to configure this. Perhaps someone does and can chime in.

I have found a way to manually circumvent the courtesy wipe: Quick momentary (0.5 second) pulls on the washer stalk will spray the window without automatically activating the follow-up wiper action (and courtesy wipe). After a few quick momentary pulls to get sufficient spray coverage, I then manually use the single wipe feature (momentary downward stalk motion)  one or two times to clean off washer fluid (without the annoying delayed courtesy wipe).

  2. Picked up our CMAX Energi yesterday from our local Ford dealer service department after the repair.  They had it for about 8 days.  The eCVT failed with 63K, and mostly electric miles.  The build date was 12/22/2012.  They reported that the differential and transfer shaft bearings were pitted, and performed TSB 18-2328 to replace HF35 transmission assembly.  Several parts were included in the invoice including brake cleaner, sealant, and anti-freeze, but ATF wasn't listed.  I hope they didn't put the old stuff back in.

I believe the replacement HF35 transmissions already include the automatic transmission fluid (sealed unit).

The invoice of my HF35 transmission replacement back in Nov 2017 (per TSB17-0039) included 5 quarts of what I believe to be engine oil. It was listed after Brake Cleaner and Anti-Freeze as "5 XT*10 QLVC OIL- AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION".

I just hope Ford fixed the known bearing issue in the replacement transmissions so it does not re-occur. So far, my new transmission has 15K miles on it and is as quiet as the day I bought the vehicle in 2013.

  3. The air compressor unit you listed looks good. Just make sure the 12v lighter cord and hose is long enough to reach all four tires. I had a similar unit and had to use the front lighter socket so I could reach front tires and rear lighter socket to reach the rear tires.

Another option, If you do not have a battery jump starter, is to consider getting the following jump starter and air compressor combo unit:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075XLC116/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It is more money, but I really like inflating the tires without having to manage the lighter plug/cord (especially in the winter).

It also has the added benefit of it doubling as a jump starter to combat the dreaded dead 12v battery.

  4. +1 on above suggestion regarding General Altimax RT43 tires. I installed 4 last November and really like the reduced noise and increased ride comfort. It also handles real well (including snow). I have noticed a slight drop in MPG's going from OEM Michelin to the General Altimax RT43, but for me the ride comfort and handling is worth it.

  5. I hear you all describing this as a grinding/thumping noise, so the high pitched whine I'm starting to hear occasionally when the car is quiet is more likely something to do with the ANC than with the transmission?  85K mi on original transmission so far, mostly around town miles.

In my case, it was not a high frequency noise. It was a low frequency metallic rubbing/grinding noise as described in TSB 17-0039 (see attached).

Search for posts on this forum how to disable ANC by pulling a fuse. You can try that to isolate if high frequency is due to ANC.

I suspect you may have some other issue. Perhaps bad wheel bearing or the electric AC compressor motor?

  6. Did not know CMAX showed oil life left on any screen. I do run the VHR. Where can I see this info?

    Thank you

To my knowledge, Oil Life Remaining does not appear on any in car screen/menu.

If your vehicle is registered on Ford Owners site (https://owner.ford.com), and you run VHR, you receive an email summary of VHR which contains Oil Life Remaining. (Note: Per post 29 above, VHR feature is being discontinued effective August 1, 2018)

  7. Someone posted on Ford FFH forum that the Oil Life Monitor (OLM) data (which is part of VHR) is available via in car menu/display:

    http://fordfusionhybridforum.com/topic/12308-wow-ford-killing-vehicle-health-reports/

Pretty sure I've been through all the menus on my 2013 SE, and have never run across OLM data.

If anyone knows the menu path to get OLM data in the CMax, please let us know.  Thanks.

  8. Agree the VHR report was not very detailed.

However, the VHR was a quick way to display the Oil Life Monitor (% of life remaining before oil change) for those of us who do not want to mess with OBDII monitors. I assume the OLM feature is unique to Ford. Does anyone know which (if any) OBDII monitors read and display Ford's OLM status?

Who knows...maybe Ford will be eliminating the OLM feature as well?

  9. Looks like Ford is indeed abandoning support for Sync 2 users. I received email today from Ford stating Vehicle Health Report for Sync 2 users will be discontinued effective August 1, 2018.  More info available here:

    https://owner.ford.com/content/ford-dot-com/en/tools/account/maintenance/vehicle-health-report-discontinued-faqs.html

Really bad move on Fords part. I'm pretty sure continuing this existing feature would not cost them much money. What will cost them money is people remembering Ford's poor support of Sync 2 when they decide to purchase their next vehicle (from someone other than Ford).

  10. Don't get too discouraged. I experienced similar delays as you are when I had my transmission replaced under warranty 3 months ago. Took 3 weeks to get tranny, then another 2 weeks to install because lead hybrid tech got sick. They wanted an in-experienced tech to take over, but I told them I'd rather wait a bit longer to have experienced lead tech continue when he got well. It's worth the wait...you do not want an in-experienced tech doing this install. Car is now as quiet as the day I bought it new.

  11. My 2013 C-Max's manual lift gate will not unlock when the key fob buttons are pushed either for all four doors or the tail gate one.  I can hear a click but no unlocking.

If I push down on the door just below the rear window the tail gate unlocks.  Took it to my dealer who could replicate the problem but no quick fix. Dealer wants to install a new lock at $500.00!  A lot of money.

    Any thoughts?

I had the same thing happen about the same time last year (beginning of winter), and was shocked when all the dealer had to do was lube/spray latch. Problem has been gone ever since. He said it was not uncommon for latches to get "sticky" in cold weather. Don't know what lubricant they use, but I remember they used a lot of it because I was wiping lubricant drippings for several days afterwards.

You also might want to check/lube the black spring bumpers on the inside edges of latch.

  12. What was the rear camber?  IIRC, the spec allows camber to be -2.4 degrees.  Many performance cars will not have near that much negative rear camber.  The closer one gets to zero, the less inside wear one will have on the tires. One member put a kit on to reduce their negative camber.  IIRC, when I was researching camber, the Prius spec was less than -1.5 degrees.

I believe the high C-Max negative camber is for the rear of the C-Max to handle better given the extra weight of the HVB over the rear wheels. But tire noise is the tradeoff.

Yes, the rear camber spec range is -0.9 to -2.4 degrees. I agree that -2.4 degrees seems high. (Updated post: Attached alignment results and specs):

Let us know what your MPG's are. :) Paul

My current Year-to-Date MPG is 45.1 MPG (and most of that was with bad front wheel bearings and transmission). Also, keep in mind us "Northerners" take an MPG hit due to temperature, which was 13F this morning :(

I fully expect to take an FE hit of about 5% with the General Altimax RT43 tires, but I only drive about 12K miles a year, so it is not as big a hit for me as it would be for someone who drives many more miles. I'm OK losing 5% FE for an increase in driving comfort and better handling in the snow (which I'm afraid is not far off).

  13. P3G, how are the General Altimax RT43 tires wearing?  Are you still happy with them?

My OEM tires on my 2013 CMax SE have 48K miles on them and dealer says the road noise I am hearing is due to uneven wear on all of my OEM tires (even after they just replaced my transmission under warranty for grinding/thumping noise, along with new wheel bearings).

Car rides much quieter with new transmission and wheel bearings, but there is still a thumping/rotational road noise in front. I would like to eliminate the tires as a factor in the rotational noises I am still hearing (before I go back to dealer). I'm thinking of replacing OEM's with the General Altimax RT43, and just wanted to get an update from you (and anyone else) who has the Altimax TR43 tires. Thanks.

Just an update on above. I replaced all four OEM Michelin tires with the General Altimax RT43, and all thumping/rotational road noise is gone! The car rides as smooth and as quiet as the day I drove it off the dealers lot new.

Now for the interesting part...I had the tire installer check alignment, and all measurements were well within manufacturer's specs (including rear camber). I thought for sure it would be out of alignment, given the significant amount of tire/road noise I has hearing (even with rotating my OEM Michelin's every 9K miles and running them at about 45 PSI). My guess is that all the miles I had driven with bad transmission and/or wheel bearings contributed to the abnormal tire wear.

On this new set, I plan to rotate every 5K miles, and make sure they are crossed as recommended in Owners Manuals.

  14. Thanks for the report...very informative.

What was the symptom that you noticed with the faulty Half Shaft?  Was it a thumping noise and/or vibration at high speed?

I noticed you replaced your Half Shaft not long after your transmission was replaced. My transmission and both front wheel bearings were recently replaced (under warranty at 49K miles), and the metal grinding I heard is now gone. However, I continue to hear a thumping noise in front that varies with speed. Dealer said it is road noise due to uneven tire wear. I'm in process of replacing the tires to hopefully eliminate the thumping noise (or at least eliminate the tires as cause). If new tires do not resolve issue, I'm wondering if a faulty transmission and/or wheel bearings could somehow damage the half-shaft?

  15. ...

After much research, I bought the General AltiMAX RT43.  IMO after nearly 4 k miles of driving, the General's are hands down better than the Michelins and Ecopias with respect to performance, noise and ride comfort (especially if you like a stiffer feeling tire).  The drawback with the General's is FE.  I'd say that the Generals are 2-3 % worse than the Ecopias and 4-6% worse than the Michelins (2 mpg at 40 mpg).  I know that those that value FE more than performance won't be able to live with the FE hit over the Michelins.  But the performance of the Generals, IMO, runs circles around the Michelins. BTW, I'm running 45-46 psi in the Generals as they are a lot firmer feeling tire than the Michelins.  I ran about 48 psi in the Michelins and Ecopias.

    ...

I'll let the reader go to TireRack and read their test report on the General.  I've attached several snips showing a comparison of the three tires from TireRack.  Time will tell how the noise issue progresses with the Generals.

  16. My 2013 C-Max had similar thumping/bobbling noise during low speed bumps and dealer applied TSB 13-9-9 (superseded by TSB 13-12-9) to my rear struts.

(Note that TSB 13-9-9 & 13-12-9 originally applied to front struts, but I believe they were later updated to include rear struts.)

Not sure if the above would apply to the 2016 model, but it might be helpful to point these TSB's out to your dealer. They do not appear to be very time consuming, so it might be worth a try.

  17. I was thinking of posting the same question my self.

The only thing I noticed was higher regen when you let off the throttle and laggy throttle response, but I need to try again to see if I'm just confused.

I've gotten 45MPG this week I've owned with eco off.

Most here don't have the "Eco Mode", I believe that was first added to the 2016 C-Max.

I agree with the above observations. There may be some confusion on ECO mode. I believe there are two ECO modes...one related to cruise and one related to normal driving (on 2016 and later CMax).

I own a 2013 and it has ECO mode option in cruise control (offering delayed accell/decell), but it does not have ECO mode option during normal driving (i.e. always displaying ECO on dash.

During my recent travel, I rented a 2016 CMax and noted it did have a continuous ECO display on dash during normal driving (without cruise on). I also observed the same lag noted in first re-post above. The vehicle would not coast as far as my 2013 CMax. At one point, I thought I was in L1 gear.

  18. Ford Motor Company is expanding a previously announced safety recall regarding door latches to include approximately 1,500,000 additional vehicles at the request of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, bringing the total to 2,383,292 vehicles. Affected vehicles include 2013-15 Ford C-MAX ....

    More at :  https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2016/09/08/ford-expands-door-latch-safety-recall-in-north-america.html

It appears the regional restrictions listed in original recall notice (sunbelt and Pacific coast states) have been changed...my 2013 CMax purchased in Illinois now shows this recall on Ford's site.

  19. I have a 2013 SE with the base (non-touch Synch) radio. FM reception is fine, but the AM reception has deteriorated over the past few months. I now hear static on local stations that normally would come in very clear. I replaced the antenna stalk (but static/whistling still exists).

I also have started to hear a whistling noise that seems to vary with the speed of the climate control fan. This (along with the new antenna not helping) makes me believe I may have developed a wiring/grounding issue.

Has anyone experienced similar deteriorating AM reception issues, and if so, what was the fix?

Any other ideas on what may be the cause?

    Thanks.
