  1. chrisl

    painted holes

From the album: yakima rack install

As recommended in the yakima instructions, I touched up the bare metal with paint. Since it will never be seen I just used a paint pen from the hardware store.

    holes deburred

From the album: yakima rack install

The holes drilled to the final 25/64" and the lathe tool I used for deburring.
  3. From the album: yakima rack install

This shows the holes marked and punched on the masking tape. I installed the front bar centered 11" back from the rear edge of the windshield glass. There are internal mounts for the overhead handles directly underneath, but the bolt holes for the landing pad go immediately in front of and behind it. The rear bar is centered 34" behind the front bar. The outside edge of the landing pads is about 0.5" from the inside edge of the gutter (measured to the center of the gap between the rubber and metal). There's a large internal cross beam slightly further back that kept me from going to 36"-- both internal beams would interfere with installation of the blind nuts (the nuts have to insert and rotate). There's also a pair of internal rails that run front-to-back along both sides that can interfere with insertion of the nuts. I'd probably go another 1/4" or more in from the gutter if I had to do it again.
  4. From the album: yakima rack install

All the tools I used for the installation, except for the hammer (used to drive the punch): pencil masking tape measuring tape (I used two- a soft flexible one that's good for measuring along the roof, and a metal retractable one) small flat bladed screwdriver (for removing and flipping various screw covers) T15 torx driver (all the accessories that have to be removed for the headliner drop are T15) touch up paint hammer center punch (to set drill hole locations) electric drill 1/8" drill bit (pilot holes) 1/4" drill bit (intermediate size) 25/64" drill bit (final size, specified by yakima) deburring tool (I used a lathe tool) drill stops (made from PVC pipe - extra pipe and cutter shown) flexible video inspection scope (useful, not required)
  5. well it finally happened today... I spotted my first CMax on the road (that wasnt in a dealers lot), that I can 100% confirm (last time I thought I saw one on the fwy but cant confirm without some doubt). Amazingly, it happened right near my work. My co-worker and I were on our way to see one of our suppliers who was having a quality issue that was affecting us. we had just left the parking lot and turned onto the main street. then out of the blue a brand new white CMax turned onto the main street and showed up right next to us on the left 10-15 ft away. sadly, i didn't have my cell phone with me to take a picture of it! This happened today Tues 6/25/13 in Anaheim, CA on Ball Rd near cross street of East St. around 810am. Hopefully we will find out who it was somewhat in the forum. Oh well i estimate I will start seeing them like crazy now..... yeah right :)
  6. Hi, I think it would be beneficial to the forum if we had a bi-weekly or even monthly chatroom. This would mean however often a moderator wanted, they could open up a instant chatroom to talk about the subject they pick. So, say you wanted to talk about the C-max recall. You could post a message on the front page of the forum saying Aug 5th, starting at 5:30 click over to the chatroom to talk about the C-max recall. This is better in a way than the normal blog, because you can get everyones thoughts and concerns instantly. Also, I don't know of any other forums that have this. Meaning ours would be the first. Please think about it, then tell me what you thought.
  7. New owners of an Ice Storm hybrid. Bought from Univesity Ford in Durham ... started process with an internet inquiry. Bought SEL model to get leather seats and nav. Very happy so far. Paid a few hundred dollars over dealer invoice. Didn't get much for our 2004 Volvo trade in, but it is what it is. Car is mostly for my wife, who is 5 feet tall. I'm 6 feet. The car works perfectly for both of us. Currently getting 42 mpg with mostly around town driving. First road trip coming up in a couple of weeks.
  8. So, I obviously have a big problem with the max. I have contacted Ford and have a case number and all that stuff so I am not so much looking for an answer rather than sharing my experience. For starters, MPG. I would cautiously state that everyone needs to relax about the low MPG. The break in period of the car and what appears to be a glorious misunderstanding of mean, median, and mode are responsible for this. Even though I am getting about 35 MPG at the 5,000 ish mile mark, I expect warmer weather and more break in to cross the gap. Oh sure, I have more problems; rear kick to open the hatch thingy is intermittent, GPS is lost, the gain on the speaker phone mic is way too high, and sync. Sync is the one problem that is so significant that this will be my last Ford purchase. Take a look at the video..... It isn't 1993 and we should have this radio thing to the iPhone 5 thing figured out BEFORE we launch a car. After talking with Ford they actually admit that the iPhone is more powerful than their Sync system and the Sync doesn't know how to act. While I applaud Ford for trying to take care of, we'll, everything, I think they fell short. All I want is what what's advertised. Not to wildly ridiculous when all I want is to; make a call, have a text read to me, and listen to the radio. My C Max experience has failed me at all three. Now I know some of will have diarrhea of the blog and star screaming how its Apple's fault and even pepper that with some Steve Jobs versus Bill Gates conspiracy theories. I get it. But, Ford claimed that it would work, not Apple. Ford admits the iPhone is more powerful than Sync so I will let them figure that out. I love my dealership and they have tried everything they can but my mechanic isn't a software programer nor do I want him to be. Ford promises a fix is coming but.....
