MTE issue. Somebody explain

How does MTE go up in a matter of a few miles? Today I was on my way home and when I checked miles-to-empty it was at 88. I was about 2/3 of the way home on my 30 mile commute. After about another 5 miles I checked again and it said I now had 122 MTE! How does this happen and why? This isn't the first time it happened either.

I think it has more to do with your driving. It calculates MTE by your FE over the last (some period) of your driving. So if you do really good for, say, the last 20 miles, MTE goes up. Conversely, if your mpg is really bad over the same distance, it goes down.

Where you park your car can influence it too. My driveway is on an incline. So my fuel gauge is not accurate when I first start in the morning. Once I drive a few miles it gets a better reading and MTE, goes up. Make sense?
