Maybe 5*F hotter, not much, but no reason to make it worse. ;)XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Well I went the next step to improving short trip mileage by installing Transmission Heater Pad, a Wolverine Model 9 Pan Heater, 125Watts/120vac. I needed to file down ridges some on the bottom of Trans to make it easier for Heating Pad to stick to Trans. I plugged in Block, Oil Pan and Trans Heater pads for over two hours this morning getting TFT145*F, WT135*F and IT95*F with outside temp in the garage at 60*F . With all Grill Covers on temps dropped about 10*F for the first minute with outside temps 40*F and 2.4mi. trip, TFT145*F, WT182*F and IT64*F when I got to work. Too bad there's no selectable oil temp or trans oil temp gauge in the cluster.The ICE computer is capable of giving all kinds of info, but I don't think FORD wants people to have it, just asking for problems. I just heard from my FORD SM that his FORD contact said Trans Fluid Temp should be the same as WT 200*F-220*F. "Houston We Have A Problem"! Yesterday I made a 100mi. trip to Atlanta and back with Outside temps 39-40*F and TFT got up to 246*F with Grill Covers on. An Hour later I returned home and at about half way TFT had gotten to 235*F so I stopped on a off ramp and removed lower Grill Cover where Trans Cooler is. To my surprise the TFT temp kept going up to 250*F for the rest of the trip. The only reason I can figure for this was that after removing lower Grill Cover the WT never got above 215*F so the shutters never opened to improve air flow through the Trans Cooler. Another possibility would be some restriction in the oil flow.It sure would be nice if members with ScanGaugeII's or Torque Apps would monitor TFT to see what numbers they are coming up with. I have a bluetooth plug for the cars OBD port but when I had my prius I had an android and was able to run torque lite... if you have a good app for the iphone I could start capturing some data for you on my 18 mile commute...I'm not aware of any iPhone Apps, Apple is hard to work with apparently. I think you can operate Torque on a laptop.I think CVT Trans Fluid is more like Motor Oil so it can handle higher temps, but I'm having problems getting any info on it. I'm glad I have a ScanGaugeII because it is dedicated to the car although I can go from one car to another no problem. It arrived today and I tested it out on my Highlander with Torque Pro and Note 4. Adding these data capture devices can sometimescause vehicle network problems as they can/will interfere with the vehiclesability to communicate between it's modules on the network. It also looks like the transmission fluid is lower viscosity than the engine oil. I'm surprised that it could go that high without hurting something. Whether the scanner connects via bluetooth, wifi or a hardwired cable is immaterial. The bus is only so fast so if you're monitoring a large number of PID's, you could fill up the pipe in theory. I've used a few different OBDII scanners over the past 15+ years, and have never set a code on any vehicle because of their use. ptjones Posted February 23, 2015 Author Report Share Posted February 23, 2015 This morning I had the Trans Heater on for three hours and It was reading 148*F with garage temp of 57*F. My HVB was low so the ICE started up immediately and TFT dropped to 132*F quickly and back up to 136*F by the time I got to work in 2.4mi., an indication that the Trans pump is working some, OT was 41*F. :) Paul Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Marc Smith Posted February 24, 2015 Report Share Posted February 24, 2015 ok Well I got torque pro running now, on my wifes old android phone but its not recognizing any of the trans temp sensor data... so I am looking for a PID to get the data I need I think I found one on the ecoboost site. so I'll give it a go when I get home today.. Marc Smith Posted February 24, 2015 Report Share Posted February 24, 2015 torque data logging works.... in my 30 minute drive home from work... it recorded data 4827 times...or 103 single spaced pages so now I need to figure out how much is too much. maybe every minute on a short trip?? and every ten minutes on a long trip? So I have pared down the data to once every 30 seconds if anyone wants the full data let me know. also give me ideas on what you want logged...I logged time, Ambient air temp, engine coolant, engine rpm, Speed, trans temp. in a nut shell.. low trans temp of 64 in a semi climate controlled garage at work with ambient air 62by the time I got home trans temp 107, ambient air 32, engine temp 165. max speed of 47. total distance (one thing I did not capture) is about 15 miles. trackLog-2015-Feb-24_15-30-20.pdf ptjones and hybridbear 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

On a trip like yours I would be running around 150*F. What I don't know for sure is whether Grill Covers have any effect on Trans temps. Going home without lower Grill Cover to night, see if it makes any difference. Marc Smith looks Like Grill Covers would help get your ICE up to operating temp and sooner too. You need to get to 202*F as quickly as possible. My FORD SM said he was told Trans operating temp was the same as ICE, 200-220*F. Wednesday looks questionable... Paul, I plan on doing grill covers, one day :) . I'm going to try to make them out of aluminum and tuck them in between the grill slots to retain the factory look of the front end. this time of year my ice is running more for the cabin heat than anything else on the short commute to work. The enrgi would have probably been the smarter choice if I could have found one used in the price range I was looking at I'm still getting 40-45 to/from work... I was looking on torque and I don't think I can tell it to capture data at a set time... so I can only imagine how many lines of data im going to get on my way to florida...
