How to Drive a CMAX Hybrid/FFH to get Great Gas Mileage
ptjones replied to ptjones's topic in Hybrid Driving Tips & Tricks
I made 2 new wheel covers and I can feel the car rolling easier(less aero drag) with about 1 mpg improvement in my average on this tank to 57mpg. Paul -
I disagree with "re-learn" statement, people going from ICE car to a Hybrid expect their to be some difference, but when the manufacturer doesn't give any guidance they're going to do what their use to. FORD's solution was to have MPG (Prius) switch to improve FE on 2016 and newer. We don't drive a Mustang the same as F150 truck, each vehicle has it's own driving characteristics. As far as Wayne Gerdis NIRO testing, I talked to Bob, Wayne's co-driver and he said they drove slow and had strong tail wind, not a good comparison. Four out of 5 NIRO's I drove I got a little better than EPA. The 2017 CMAX Titanium got alot better than EPA and little better NIRO Touring's too. I missed the brake coach on My 2010 FEH with a bar that moved up and down with brake pressure, that been said I still have 98% Life Time Braking Score . :) On FE the CMAX has more HP so it can use more gas during acceleration, you don't get something for nothing. Bottom line is the CMAX is designed to run in EV 40-60% of the time where as KIA NIRO, Prius V and Hyundai Ioniq use EV to assist the ICE. The sad thing about CMAX MPG's, auto reviewers don't have a clue how to drive a CMAX/FFH and you can blame FORD for never explaining how to drive the car through OM or YouTube like I did. After testing 5 KIA NIRO's and comparing it to Prius V and CMAX Titanium, the CMAX was able to get better MPG's than NIRO Touring getting over 46mpg. :) Paul

How to Drive a CMAX Hybrid/FFH to get Great Gas Mileage
ptjones replied to ptjones's topic in Hybrid Driving Tips & Tricks
A couple of days ago I found another good reason to have wheel covers. I was going through my favorite roundabout as I was exiting my car slid out and caught the curb with my front wheel and slightly touched the rear wheel. I assumed the worst , but was surprised the wheel covers protected the wheels so their was no damage to wheels. The front tire did get a gash in it from the LEXAN cover breaking, but is still holding air. Front cover was broken, but the rear one wasn't, nylon screw to keep cover from rotating did break off. I ordered a used tire with the same tread depth to replace the front one. The car seems fine so far. BTW the going price for refurbished wheel is around $200 on eBay. Paul -
Everything will average out after 10 fillups. Good Job. :) Good that you are on Fuelly.com Paul

I couldn't find this article do you have a link? :) Paul

I don't see how you can get 35 mpg City unless you are using A/C to the max. HVB doesn't take cargo space, it has more cargo space than the other 3 cars. Sometimes I think CR is really flaky. Were they talking about Energi? Paul

Be interesting to see what your next tank is. :) Paul

One reminder that if you are stopped for any extended period of time, waiting on long signal, train crossing, drive through etc. even though the ICE stops at least shift into Park or better yet turn off car. Remember you are using power from HVB to keep things going which will bring the MPG's down. With a ScanGuageII you can watch it go down. YouTube views are up to 2237 now :) . Paul -
ScanGuange can be programmed to show any value that the ECM/OBDII puts out and their is a thread on this forum for inputting the values. :) I would recommend you look at my 3 YouTube videos How to drive a CMAX Hybrid to get Great Gas Mileage on this Forum. :) Paul

All I know for sure is the Michelin adviser I talked to on the phone said if I was getting even wear on my tires at 50psi., that would be the pressure he would recommend using. :) Here is a Link: http://www.cartalk.com/content/it-possible-burst-tire-too-much-air-pressure-find-out Paul

How to Drive a CMAX Hybrid/FFH to get Great Gas Mileage
ptjones replied to ptjones's topic in Hybrid Driving Tips & Tricks
It's come to my attention that some CMAX Owners don't know the YouTube videos are on Post #1. I'll repost here. I have made three YouTube Videos for driving a CMAX the way it was designed to be driven Called How to drive a CMAX Hybrid to get great gas mileage, Also CMAX Mods to improve MPG's and Hypermiling to improve MPG's. https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=5uHoZ5QhVXs Efficiency and Aerodynamic Mods: The First thing to do is to raise your tire pressure of your Michelin's to 50psi which is safe to do and I got 64k miles for each set of tires on my CMAX. :)https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=Xmuw6275PRw Hypermiling Video not recommended for those who can't focus on situational awareness of traffic around you all the time. https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=s09mywF78g4 Let me know what you think, any improvements. :) Paul -
A tire hitting pot holes, it is much better if the tire is over inflated than under, under the tire gets pinched on rim. I don't see a difference with tire pressure when hitting a sharp object. :) IMO Paul

Spare parts to buy before exporting the car

With almost 160k mi., I don't think their is any need to ever replace brake pads. :) If need be you can always get someone to send you parts. How long are you going to be gone? Paul -

Lunch today I went up to Decatur via I-85/I-20, 40 mi. and 8 mi city streets and average 59 MPG's. Speeds were 50 to 80 on FWY. Coming back averaged 60.4 mi. MPG's with OT of 85-90*F. I started the trip with 58.2 mpg average and ended with 58.4 with over 600 mi. on tank. Miles to Empty is 170 mi. :) And YouTube views up to 2060 now. :) Paul -
It's not critical at all. :) If I was replacing the fluid that would be different. Paul

Great Job! :yahoo: If you check your Odometer with GPS you'll gain another 0.5 mpg. :) Paul -
Good idea to check Inverter Controller Fluid, mine was below minimum mark, just added about a 1/2 cup of ICE Coolant to the reservoir not worth messing around diluting it. :) Paul
