According to ptjones: "The Service Manager at my Ford dealership informed me that Ford told him the normal operating coolant temperature was approximately 202°F-212°F." Yesterday, mine read 95*C = 203*F after driving about 15 miles, 73*F ambient temperature, speeds between 55-70 mph with bottom and middle grill covers on.

Yes, I've this many times when recording real time data via OBDII port with cruise at around 65 mph. WIth cruise set at 70 mph, I've not seen it although maybe it's because of gearing or maybe just need a steeper hill.

^^Agree^^ Here's the offer from Sirius I received today for my other vehicle. I usually only keep Sirius active on one car at a time (which now will be the C-Max). For the last four years I've never paid more than $30 for a six month subscription. What I do is about 2 weeks before expiration, I call to cancel my current subscription. They always ask why and I tell them I really don't need it but for long trips which I take a couple times a year. So, I'll call back then an buy a one month subscription. They always come back with another deal like pay for 2 months with 4 free. Looking at Sirius current packages, I believe the one I typically get is currently at $14.49 per month. Of course, if you use a CC they will set you up for auto renewal at the then current published rate which is always significantly more than these offers. So, you need to call back and cancel prior to the expiration. Otherwise, they will charge your CC. That's the only hassle since when enter your / say what you want and it's to cancel, you are on hold for a long time - 20 minutes is typical.

Thanks, will go try it. Edit: Good data. I didn't drive the car but I assume the display remains there while driving. For those that want to know coolant temperature, It's there, battery voltage, several FE numbers, rpm and so forth. It's too bad the test screen doesn't come up on the right display so you can use the left display while driving.

The shop that did mine is a graphics design shop using film as the medium for signage on vehicles. So my guess is that they buy a lot of film at very good prices. The other shops that I got quotes from were shops that did primarily auto glass and window tints. So, check out the graphic design shops too.

Fuel Saving Tips and Tricks Part 1
plus 3 golfer replied to C-MaxJaxon's topic in Hybrid Driving Tips & Tricks
There is no magic. Without real-time hard data one questions what people believe they are seeing / doing. If the battery is fully charged, all ICE energy is going to the drive line. So, FE during that time could be higher than when Ice is charging. The algorithm can't predict future conditions and thus there certainly could be speed, charge level, and other conditions where after the fact it may appear to make the wrong choices. -

The use of ICE to charge batteries makes sense under certain conditions like when ICE could be running at the most efficient areas of the BSFC curve if charging. The stored energy from such efficient charging will be used when ICE would have had to run in very inefficient areas of the BSFC curves (like acceleration and lower speeds). Even with the charging and EV mode operational losses, overall efficiency of the hybrid system improves with such operation. Also, I have run tests at 70 mph and the amount of recharge from ICE was minimal even with a 55% or so battery level (level was virtually constant within +- a few %). In other words, from an efficiency standpoint, the PC algorithm chose to not run ICE harder to charge the battery at 70 mph to its full level likely because it was not going to be an efficient use of energy. Also, once coasting down to a slower speed from 70 mph (and also going down steeper hills) ICE would shut down and there would be regeneration from such coasting which would increase the battery level to near 100% very quickly. So, the system does capture energy when going down hill and also when slowing down not using the brakes. One more point, there is no engine braking going down hill or coasting to a stop. The engine is not spinning (rpm are zero). The "braking" one feels is the motor being used as a generator and recharging. When one engages the "grade assist", engine braking will occur along with the generator "braking." -

I still don't see the point of this calculated value. There are simply too many variables to draw any conclusions. Brake regens recharge the battery like ICE and do affect FE. The calculated value removes total EV miles but does not removing the fuel saved by regen miles or the EV miles associated with regens. So the more "efficient" someone is in applying the brakes (recharging the battery through braking), the less fuel is used by ICE in recharging the battery. So, the calculated number through both fuel used and EV miles is affected based on how efficiently one uses the brakes. Just another variable in the FE game. We know the Prius gets better FE than the C-Max for several of the reasons I stated. I guess I still am not sure what you are getting at. I thought you were trying to imply the Toyota engineers get better efficiency from their hybrid / engine combination than Ford with the C-Max (efficiency = energy input to engine / energy output to drive wheels). If that's the case, you've made no convincing arguments to support it. Otherwise, why even bring Prius into the picture. You have to compare apples to apples which we really can't do for some of the reasons I stated. -

Your math is correct but I don't see the logic in the calculated number. But maybe I'm missing something. Anyways, my lifetime is 40.4 mpg and the calculated number is 27.0 mpg. And what about the regen miles? Ice runs and burns fuel to charge the batteries and to propel the car. So, the calculated number is not a calculation of the FE of ICE. What would a higher calculated number mean vs a lower calculated number? The slower you drive the more EV miles will likely be accumulated. Drive 70 mph and there will be virtually no EV miles accumulated. So, my initial guess would be that a higher calculated number means one drives faster and a lower number means one drives slower than someone else everything else being the same. But everything will likely not be equal (just look at fuelly FE number). And, I'm not sure your statement about the Prius being "far more efficient using its gas engine" is correct at all. A smaller engine and lighter car will almost always be more fuel efficient than a heavier car with a more powerful engine. Load a Prius V with an additional 366 pounds and the standard Prius with 598 pounds of additional weight and the FE numbers are likely to fall dramatically (maybe lower than the C-Max). Then after loading up these cars with additional weight, see what the performance is like - my guess rather dismal compared to the C-Max. Point is if one wants FE buy an insight or Prius. Also, at 65-70 mph aerodynamics will be more of a factor in FE than at slower speeds. So, a Prius with a Cd of 0.25 vs a C-Max of 0.30 will have significantly less aerodynamic drag and hence not suffer as much of a reduction in FE due to drag as a C-Max at high speeds. Again, it's all about understanding what one is buying when choosing whether to buy a Prius vs C-Max. If you want to maximize FE at high speed buy the Prius. I did look at these variables plus others when choosing a C-Max over a Prius and bought the C-Max knowing I was not going to get Prius like FE. -
fghalaaz, with respect to the clock issue, if you have Navigation than you can sync the clock to the gps system but otherwise we have to wait for the clock fix from Ford. I've never experienced your number 2 or number 4 on my iphone4 and can't comment on number 3. One thing I've learned after 42 years about software (began in 1970 with assembly level coding of mini-computers) is it's a product that is virtually always sold with "bugs" in it. :)

Do you have some inside information??? or are you speculating. :) Could the reason be costs???

Ford Tech Response to Clock and Calendar Problems

:hysterical: I've got to figure a way to "lemon law" this. The number of occurrences isn't the issue. It's showing the defect is material to the use and value of the car. How much is knowing the correct time worth? "Officer I never speed butthe Ford MFT clock which I set via my Garmin before leaving home now says it's 10:30 so I thought I was running late. I guess I should have spent $1000 for the navigation option." -
Park assist mishap, yes I am an idiot!

My SA spent a good amount of time demoing every feature (although he couldn't sync my phone). After he was done he indicated I would get a survey via email from Ford and he wanted me to be completely satisfied with the car before I left since his / dealer customer satisfaction performance rating was dependent on my responses. One of the questions related to explaining / demonstrating all the features on the car to my satisfaction. Maybe you should shoot Ford an email about not getting a demo on it. It just might reduce the likelihood of another owner not getting a demo on the feature and having a mishap. -

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. I guess that's why it's called park "assist". I would have thought that the car would automatically brake (if driver didn't) when in park assist mode but I guess not. -

I guess I'll take my clock reset issues on my "navigationless" SEL vs the issues listed here. I have none of these MFT issues including any iphone3 problems. :) -

If your car does not have navigation, there is no set clock to gps time in the clock settings display. -
The member that started the "battery roll call thread" needs to take ownership of the thread and be proactive when members post about a battery failure. There's needs to be a lot more data gathered than what's been posted in that thread (and in a consistent format). There's more discussion than failures reported (not what one want in such a thread). A thread like that will gain momentum if these failures affect a significant number of vehicles as most members will know of the thread and also direct new members with failures to the thread. Evidently, it's not considered a significant enough issue by most that have had failures - why? probably because it hasn't cost them $.

If you look in the MFT Users Guide, here's what it says. We don't have such line item on the clock settings display -

I do not have GPS. -
I don't believe so but IIRC data collection has been suggested before and is a good idea. Someone needs to start a new thread (suggestion would be someone that has had the issue) devoted to reporting every 12 V battery failure experienced (no discussion in the new thread) with pertinent data in a standard form which then can be easily input to a spreadsheet for analysis. Of course one problem is this forum is a small subset of C-Max owners and the failures reported will be a small number of total failures. There may not be enough data to draw any conclusions at this time. Members that have already had failures should be PMed to add their data to the data collection thread.

Ford Tech Response to Clock and Calendar Problems

My wife usually drives the Maxer and tells me when the clock is off which is generally once or twice a week. I then generally reset the clock the next time I drive the car (if I notice / remember it's off) which could be a few days later. I've never noticed the clock resetting itself after my wife informed me it was off. -
A nitrogen molecule is larger than an oxygen molecule. There is no correlation between molecular size and molecular weight.

Do you guys know the trouble codes for the CELs? A good dealer should list them on the service order. Is it misfire codes? I wonder if the car is not going into closed loop operation or staying in open loop too long.

It's not "dumbing down". A salesperson may be an expert in the technical issues but when you run a business you cannot have employees overstepping their job duties. But they should be able to refer a customer to an appropriate person or get an answer to a question which may be we are not aware of that issue. I agree a salesperson needs to know the product but not technical issues nor should they comment on what they read on forums. Like I said before, if Ford issues a TB or memo on an issue (and many times it will spell out what to say to the customer), then the dealer will be able to answer questions on issues. Ford cannot have dealers commenting on issues on forums. My salesman couldn't sync my phone. He synced his and said my phone must be bad to which I said it works on my other car. I said I'll do it when I get home which I did. I also asked him if he read the many reviews on low FE to which he said he hadn't heard of such complaints. I didn't expect him to say yes and it looks like you won't get 47/47/47. Just like I don't expect them to comment on battery issues.
