K&N Performance Air Filter
plus 3 golfer replied to 11StiLimited's topic in Accessories & Modifications
Most aren't going to drive their C-Max 300 k miles and likely not even 120 k miles. But like I said, go for the savings with an oiled filter if one is going to keep the vehicle. Sorry, but this mileage claim is hard to believe? So, a 5 mpg improvement on a 15 - 25 mpg truck would be a 20 - 33 % increase do to replacing an OEM air filter with another air filter? Second, modern engines operate in closed loop operation to optimize FE / emissions based on sensor data input. There's simply no way one could achieve a 20 - 30% FE improvement by replacing an OEM air filter on any modern vehicle unless one illegally modded their vehicle (like removing emissions equipment and re-tuned) and then the FE improvement is not due solely to the air filter. -
K&N Performance Air Filter
plus 3 golfer replied to 11StiLimited's topic in Accessories & Modifications
Why do people believe the C-Max has a restrictive filter? where's the evidence? and replacing it with an oiled K&N less restrictive filter is of benefit? where's the evidence? If you want more dirt in your engine, put the K&N filter in or any other less restrictive filter. If you want to save money on air filter changes starting at 120 k miles, put the K&N filter in (3 - OEM filters = 1 K&N filter). If you want to risk an oiled MAF sensor, put the oiled K&N filter in (of course K&N denies this is an issue with a properly oiled filter). It's one own choice but beware of seat of the pants performance and mileage improvement claims using a "less restrictive" filter (if there is a restriction, it's virtually always not the air filter) ;) -
How much does the US Spend on Importing Oil?
plus 3 golfer replied to ecodad's topic in Lounge: Off-Topic
Looks like the thread TOPIC may be moot in a decade. :) How many are old enough to remember the "gas lines" in 1973? After 40 years are we seeing the light at the end of the tunnel? -

Didn't know that. So, ICE never runs when in reverse?- 11 replies

Regenerative Braking
plus 3 golfer replied to VirginiaRick's topic in Brakes, Chassis, Park Assist & Suspension
No, the electric motor and engine turn the same direction whether in reverse or drive. That's why cars have a transmission. So, when the shaft of the motor is supplied power from the engine or from coasting / braking, the electric motor becomes a generator producing electricity.- 11 replies

I like the idea of using the silhouette of the C-Max on a shirt but it could be copyright infringement. The UK image looks similar to the current image Ford is using in it's US promotions. The UK owners club likely has Ford's permission to use the image.

Mechanical Breakdown Insurance (MBI) - Any Experiences?
plus 3 golfer replied to plus 3 golfer's topic in Lounge: Off-Topic
I did check on linea while back for the Ford ESP and IIRC the price was around $1500+- for a 6/7? yr / 100k miles with $100 deductible. On other forums I have only heard good things about the Geico MBI. The Geico MBI rate although not guaranteed is supposed to be stable with some increase. One poster indicated that after 5 years the MBI was 25% of his premium. My premium on the C-Max will be $414 / yr with max liability limits including under/uninsured, $100 deductible comp with no glass deductible and $1000 deductible collision, road side assistance and MBI. So, even if one as to pay $100 in the 5th year for MBI, it seems like a bargain . Of course what this does though is lock one into Geico for 7 years of insurance. Here's a link on the Geico MBI. -
I am considering whether to switch to GEICO and add MBI on my auto insurance policy for my C-MAX. The cost is about $28 a year with a $250 deductible and can be added if the car was purchased new and under 15k miles and less than X months ago. The coverage supposedly covers all mechanical systems (question whether it covers MFT) except specifically excluded items such as wear and tear and maintenance items. It seems like a "no-brain" alternative to Ford's Extended Service Plan as it is pay as you go vs a large onetime payment of $1500+ (IIRC, via internet Ford dealers). I was quoted $1895 supposedly X-Plan pricing by my dealer. I have purchased many new cars but have only purchased an extended warranty one time on a new 2000 Passat for $800 (and it paid off handsomely). Has anyone filed a claim under GEICO's MBI or other insurers' MBI? and if so were there any problems? any other issues with MBI? Does the MBI premium increase every year? Geico auto insurance is cheaper than my current insurer but home owners and umbrella are slightly more. Overall, I can get full GEICO coverage including MBI for slightly less than I'm currently paying. Thanks. Ken

Floor Mat replacements - Front
plus 3 golfer replied to wamba2000's topic in Accessories & Modifications
Here's pics of the coco mats I purchased. The mats are laying on top of the existing mats. One can get grommets installed free on the drivers side so one can remove the existing mat and snap the grommets in to the posts on the floor. The mats are black with taupe dots. The dots look virtually the same color as the stone interior. The quality is excellent. The fit is perfect. The mats are heavy and fairly stiff as sisal / coco mats tend to be. The bottom of the mats have a thick rubber backing with nubs. They should wear like iron and can be washed with a hose or pressure washer. The only downside is the mats are expensive but I should never have to replace them. -
14,000 miles and counting (lessons learned)

Did you run with the grill covers on? -
Great link (did you post this before, it looks familiar). Yep, pretty much what I got. With only $2125 cost difference, 8.5 cents / kWh, and $3.75 gas. Payback is 14 years - way to long for me. And again, there's a higher annual VLT on the Energi in AZ over the Hybrid and slightly higher insurance.

Ford Tech Response to Clock and Calendar Problems
plus 3 golfer replied to Generalbeluga's topic in Lounge: Off-Topic
Correct, that option does not appear on the Clock Screen for those without the navigation option. -
I have done the math (for me in AZ) based on the initial o-p-c difference including Federal tax rebate and Ford incentives plus the additional annual cost for the AZ Vehicle License Tax (based on difference in base price of Energi vs Hybrid) and insurance. On about 5000 annual plug-in miles, my electric bill would increase $144. The equivalent fuel to drive 5000 miles, would be about $469 at 40 mpg and $3.75 / gallon. First year fuel savings would be about $325. First year AZ VLT would be about $75 more for the Energi (declining each year thereafter). I can't remember what the insurance diff was but I think it was less than $50 a year. The X-Plan pricing difference + sales tax difference + $1000 rebate available on Hybrid but not Energi less Federal tax savings on Energi was about $2125 more for the Energi. This was not a huge difference but my annual savings would be limited by the range of the Energi in EV mode. There is also likely a FE penalty for hybrid only driving (using fuel) since the Energi is about 259 pounds heavier. This would erode the $325 savings and be dependent on how many non-plug-in miles were driven. So, unless there would be a significant increase in the differential between gasoline and electric price escalation rates, the payback for me was too long. If the range were 30 miles instead of 20 miles, I likely would have bought the Energi. Of course everyone's assumptions will be different.

Yes, works if you "paid" for the navigation system. Shouldn't have to pay for the navigation system to keep the correct time. Not really the solution for the problem unless Ford want to upgrade all cars with a free navigation system. :)

How much does the US Spend on Importing Oil?
plus 3 golfer replied to ecodad's topic in Lounge: Off-Topic
Enough said. :) -
Now I know why Toyota designed the Prius to be soft and spongy with lackluster performance - that apparently is what hybrid owners want.
-
So, how do you fit the quoted profile below on what Ford says affects FE significantly? Sounds like ambient temperature and not yet past break-in mileage has affected your FE and maybe speed.
-
Good there is apparently no issue. The best time to check coolant level is when the coolant has cooled. The expansion tank level can vary based on coolant temperature. So there could be a measurable difference if one checks right after shutdown (200+*F) vs when the coolant is at 50 * F. When the coolant level is proper, air only gets in the system if one opens the coolant circuit or it has a leak. When the engine and coolant is at ambient temperature the level should be very consistent and at or above the minimum level.

For those who have had 12v Battery problems
plus 3 golfer replied to zhackwyatt's topic in Batteries
I believe the option packages take care of that. I believe the 8" comes with package 202a and 203a on the SE. The SEL and Energi have the 8". I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. :) -
1. Model -Hybrid SEL 2. Lifetime Total Miles Driven - 2807 3. Lifetime EV miles driven - 1109 4. Percentage drive EV to total - 39.5% 5. Lifetime Regen miles - 166 6. Lifetime mpg - 41.4 7. Not normal. It's a sealed system. Mine was above the minimum level when purchased and it appears to be the same at 3200 miles.
