I had this as well, I needed a second kick to open it once it unlocks. Now, I've also has one example where the car is locked and then I kicked it once (using the back-to-engine direction and it unlocked AND opened. The only thing I can think where 2 kicks was needed was when I actually walked away for about 5 mins and then returned. The second example was a 30 second one. May be it has something to do with the car "settling" in locked mode or something. I recall once at the market that it did not open when I came back from the market with both my hands full. Weird.

Capless tank, any possible problems with topping off?

Do you have any Regrets in Buying the C-Max
Jus-A-CMax replied to NCtoCAgirlie's topic in Buying, Order and Leasing
Hell everything looks flat, need to plum bob either valleys to see how flat (NOT) they are. All the Energi wanting poster + 1 here as well BUT at this time, that car is not affordable. Problem being is that you pay upfront front for the "tax credit" and then claim the refund back at tax time. Plus add the cost of a charge station...may be Series II in a few years time. -
Congratulations and Very cool, so if you pass a white SEL CMax around the cty, give me a wave...lol.

Ah, this poster knows my roads...yaaah! Actually, I head off along the Los Angeles Hwy, thru the farmslands - it's the most efficient way to utilize Max cause its flat and its speed limited to 45-55mph, ideal for the Max. I waste more time but its a nice super easy drive.Plus most of my work, I deviate off that road into the Las Posas region, or Spanish Hills. Interestingly, I've done a run with eco cruise at 65MPH all the way on the 118 (typically from Los Angeles Hwy exit) and I got 40MPG. I did the same run at 62-63MPH and I got 44MPG. I noticed that just manually pulsing and gliding (thus far), seems to chew more gas than using the eco cruise. I don't have the stat yet but I will soon.

ptjones, out of curiousity, did you make any complaint about the MPG? I really don't see any need to go to Ford servicing, the car hasn't even done 1K on the odo and the next oil change is at 10K, way, way away.

Capless tank, any possible problems with topping off?

I am curious, I tend to top off the tank till it hits a quarter. Are there any issues with doing this with the capless fueling system in the CMax? -

Nah, I hate it, hate it, hate it. But I lie. Seriously, it's a great little car with SURPRISING room in the back and with the folding seats. Awesome power and I love the steering in this car, super precise. Best of all, go test drive a Prius, infact, do a few test drives in the Prius and then afterward, go test drive a C-Max. Night and Day, Winter and Summer dude. Go with the SEL, 302A is the ice cream but if you want some nice fudge on top, go with the 303A. Whats the difference - park assist and front sensors. You know how the city like to put crap infront of the parking spots. Dude, same here. Which part of LA? I'm near the foothills of San Fernando. I commute the 210-118-405 freeways, going between LA county to Ventura etc. So anywhere < 55MPH bumper to bumper, this car shines. I drove from my house to Beverly Hills, exit Wilshire and I got a cool 51MPGs but coming back, I was fanging home in near freezing temps and got 36MPGs. I also do runs down to North Hollywood along the 170 exit Victory and it's a 58-61MPGs but coming back it's 36MPG. So what am I saying - it depends on the terrain, I didn't realise how uphill or downhill the San Fernando valley is. I have the Platinum White with the black interior. Unfortunately that was the deal with my car but I had some really nice tinting done for the windows thrown in for free as part of the package. My 303A SEL is fully loaded with tinting (but no sunroof), I got for approx $30,200. No special plan but we are long time customers of Galpin Ford. Absolutely, the utility in this car is amazing. If you read some of my past posts, I did not expect to buy this car but I did. I love the drive, power (pretty darn good for a hybrid) and utility. I can shove in my golf clubs and cart no worries and the room is very surprising. Go check it out but do yourself a favor, test drives the Toyotas and then test drive this beast. It will handle the LA traffic no worries, infact the more traffic the better. If you drive more than 65mph where EV is not used, use the eco-cruise function and I get 40MPG on the nose at this speed and my engine is only 680miles on the odo, not broken in yet. If you have any Qs, feel free to PM me as you're in my city so you know most of these high ways I am talking about. -
Another convertee from the Fusio Hybrid to the CMax, I see....said the blind man, lol. If I had the money and the Energi was available, I would have jumped on that car instead. However, I still luv DA MAX. The only thing now is that I am babying it to get as much MPG as possible and getting passed by the Prius. There are tons and tons of Prius here in this city. I am amazed at how many I've noticed lately. Another silly story, I was sitting behind a Lexus 200H (or whatever that Lexus version of the Hybrid was) and that sucker took off and I enjoyed staying on his scrawny a$$ tail. It's silly I know but i thought i would have fun, now and then. Oh...it flew totally fast in the hybrid world, not. Back to the normal channel....

Pulse and Glide for Dummies like me
Jus-A-CMax replied to Laurel's topic in Hybrid Driving Tips & Tricks
I've read that and its ubber confusing especially with all the Prius screens, which if I owned a Prius, I would try harder to understand but right now, it's a turn off. Someone should rewrite that or put a simple vid out on youtube to P&G with the CMax. I think I have the gist of it but I've tweaked it to coast cause I am finding the batteries are 1/3 low most of the time and the EV does not stay long at all so I need to recharge using the pulse, then letting it coast to regen the battery as much as possible. -
Its the Lifretime reset. Trip 1 & 2 are ok. It only took about 4 days for mine to re-learn when I reset the lifetime on miine. What I like about the EV+ is that it tries hard to give you extra EV power, look at it from the Empower mode and you can see it's pretty high even if the batteries are down to 1/3.

LOL, c'mon, Ford doesn't even give you a memory setting for the electric seats in the SEL model. Zero chance of this enhancement.

C-MAX in the snow?
Jus-A-CMax replied to jamouton's topic in Brakes, Chassis, Park Assist & Suspension
The SCC Super Z6 cable chains are the way to go. Low profile. I use them all the time with my Jags for a number of years on the 19" wheels with low profile tires and not much room in the wheel bay. Today I ordered a set for Max, same brand. SZ137 is the model number, fits the 225/50-17 tires that are on all our CMaxs. -
Interesting conversation with a Ford techie

This has GOT to go into an FAQ for this website!!!! Cool, thanks for the link! -
Rhonda, hey welcome to the site. I'm a n00b here as well and was very excited to find a forum just for our cars. Being new to hybrid driving, you'll learn quicker here than on your own testing this or that. Head down to the Fuel Mileage section for some nice hints. I think a pinned FAQ would not go astray on this website but thats admin work. By the way, nice choice on the Ice Storm. Mine is the Platinum White but the Ice Storm was close. Unfortunately, I got talked into the White by the better half. Infact, theres a ton of great colors for this car, I was really amazed by how difficult it was to choose one and LOTS of options. Did you get the tinting for the windows - thats a gotta have or high on the to-do list, changes the way the car looks, imo. Congratz and welcome, welcome, welcome....

I am not surprised. I suspect its the top end gearing, larger engine so its more efficient at highway speeds. Our usual car to Mammoth is a Jaguar Vanden Plas (2007) and that thing is a long wheel base and PLUSH, PLUSH, PLUSH and got as much room as an SUV internally and it would do 29-30MPG, sitting at around 70-72 mph (any higher and CHP along 395 is all over you like flies to crap). Its the tall gear and we always carried a box on the roof so it was aerodynamically challenged as well. My wife was considering a box but we will try to fit it all into Max. I'll post how we go, I am excited to take the Max out there and I just ordered some cable chain for the 17", never knows when it dumps there, it REALLY DUMPS! Hey, if anyone can throw me a bone as to how to drive hybrid up hill I would appreciate that...otherwise I'll eco-cruise it up there. Especially the hill up to Tom's Place, past Bishop.

Thats about right for me. High MPGs for some trips (mainly impercetible downhill freeway runs). Today for a job, I did a 43.6 mile run from San Fernando to Camarillo and got 54MPGs (60% Freeway, 30% country road 55MPH and rest suburban) with Freeway speed set to 61mph. Temp was in the mid to low 70s. On the way back, I said screw it and hit the freeways. I did 65mph on the dot over something like 30.7miles and it hit 40MPG on the dot, 100% freeway with the eco cruise on and 1 EV mile. I will be heading to Mammoth soon, fully loading Max with all the snow crap so it will be interesting to see what MPG I will get going to and coming back (up hill and down hill respectively, 290 miles each way).

Park Assist adventures
Jus-A-CMax replied to Laurel's topic in Brakes, Chassis, Park Assist & Suspension
I don't think you'll miss that much, I've driven the Jaguar XF and XJ with a great blind spot system built into the side mirrors and it has flashing yellow light warning. Personally, after using the CMax's simpler mirror in mirror blind spot system, it works just as well - as long as you check the corner mirror. It's simple and it works. -
Went back to my Ford dealer and they happen to run a training class on the C-Max Energi. As my salesman was in this class, I kinda stepped in and listened to some discussions. One interesting tid-bit that effected my wife and I, was to learn of a safety feature in our C-Max. If you open the rear passenger door, you will see an hole (about an inch in diameter) in the plastic. On the door is a pin that goes into that hole. From just listening, that pin is connected to a side bar and anchored into the chasis and in the event of a side collission, by anchoring into the chasis, it prevents provides additional bracing to the door and prevents it from crumpling inward into the passenger. Why did this effect me, my wife was recently tboned driverside by some numnutz, which is the reason I got a CMax as a replacement vehicle. Luckily it was a low speed collision but her Jaguar saved her life with the side bar on the driver door. It still shook and hurt her though and she's undergoing chiro and therapy because of the force of the impact on her body. It's nice to know Ford builds these safety niceties. Also, I had a chance to talk to the techie as to why Ford decided to cut the EV off at 62mph, given most of us drive at 65+ on the highway and he stated it was predominantly the battery. The Energi has a way, way bigger battery than the regular CMax so it can sustain the higher EV speeds. Just passing this tid bits on...

Excellent video, thanks for the links. Love his insight into the MPGs overall perspective.

Park Assist adventures
Jus-A-CMax replied to Laurel's topic in Brakes, Chassis, Park Assist & Suspension
This was one big selling point with my particular car. I recall a couple of years ago, we just bought a Jaguar and the salesman was showing us a brand spanking new Lincoln MKZ (I think) - long, long SUV and it had this park assist. We test drove it and it did its trick. It was impressive and now I find it in my CMax, did not expect it to translate down to "lesser" models so qucikly but KUDOS to Ford for doing it. -
Thats the same coincidence with me. My wifes Jaguar got totalled and all Enterprise had at the lot, when we went to get a rental, were Dodge Grand Caravan. Drove it for an entire month. Now, the room was AWESOME, I could fit in my mountain bike. High drivers position which I fell in love with because I could see more but it was a gas pig. Even tried hypermiling it but to no avail, that sucker idled too high. So it's +3 Fusion convertees to CMax. Interesting. UPDATE: I test drove a real SE Fusion hybrid couple of days ago. My impression was that it was not a quicker car getting from Point A to B, runs up the freeway ramp felt a tad slower and steering was much more precise on the CMax. Turning radius was not as good either since I usually do a ton of 3 point turns for my work. Engine noise was a little louder, you can hear the ICE more often and to me, the very same engine combo did not feel as powerful. The FH drove like an ordinary sedan and the drivers cockpit seemed ordinary. I like the CMax more, feels more roomy. All up, I did not regret the CMax and I really got nothing out of the FH test drive. It was like the other ICE 2013 Fusions. The next test drive are the Energis, -that- could be bad for me...
