Noise from ICE when getting up to speed; wasn't there before

Hi there:

First time poster!

My C-max seems to have recently developed a strange noise ("whining") when I am going from a stop until it gets up to speed (i.e. until it gets to 2nd gear). Also makes the noise when idling if the ICE is on (if heater or A/C is on).

Here is a video demonstration. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Maybe electric coolant pump motor.  You are pointing at the outlet air pipe that is connected to the throttle body .  I believe the ICE coolant pump is maybe 6 inches below the throttle body.  There is also another coolant pump for the inverter coolant loop.  It's near the bottom of the radiator. You can see the two inverter coolant black lines  just below and to the right of where you are pointing in the video.  The inverter would be working hard (heating up when accelerating from start) to supply power to the electric traction motor. I don't know the control algorithm but perhaps this coolant pump is variable speed and reving high causing the noise when accelerating from stop.

If you can find a long pipe or screw driver.  Place one end on the various components in the area the sound is coming from and the other end to your ear.  You should be able to tell what component is making the noise.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I'm hoping to get her in this week to get looked at.

I don't think it's the AC compressor though; I never have it on!

And yes, it does vary with ICE speed. From a dead-stop until I hit 40 km/hr (sorry, I'm Canadian) the noise is present and then I'll let off the gas and it's ok. Or, when it shifts out of first (as much as you can tell it's shifting from 1st with a CVT).

Being a CVT it doesn't shift, it's all done with the Electric Motors. :)

Hi there:

I thought I'd give you an update on what the deal is.

We have a family friend that works at a Ford dealership nearby that does work on our vehicles on the side (the dealership allows him to do these kind of cash jobs after-hours. They're nice!), so I called him and asked if he'd mind checking out my issue. I brought it by 3 weeks ago and left it with him. At the end of the day he called me and said: "Well, I checked it out with a stethoscope and I think it's something to do with the transmission. So, you can come get it, and make an appointment to have one of the tranny guys looks at it." I called to make an appointment the following morning and they told me to bring it in the following week. So I took it in last Wednesday and left it. At the end of the day, the service advisor called and said: "Yeah, definitely seems like something is up with it. You'll have to bring it back next week so I can work on it."  (!)

SO....I dropped it off this past Tuesday morning, first thing. I did not hear a peep until FINALLY he called me yesterday (Friday) at noon.

"Sorry, we were waiting on Ford to get back to us for approval because, well....this vehicle here, we need to take out the entire engine AND transmission. (!) So, you won't be getting it back until the end of next week at the earliest."

Son of a....

Now, I initially thought he meant I'll be getting a *new* engine and transmission, but now I'm guessing he means they just have to come out in order to be worked on. In either case, I am considering myself lucky that this happened when it did, considering that my warranty expires on JULY 27TH!

Anyway, there you go!

I'm having the same issue with my 2013. I'm at 111K miles, and the noise is driving me crazy. What did the dealer end up doing to fix it, and what was the cost? My mechanic is telling me it's not worth the cost at this point if the it's not impacting performance.
