Shutter operation with update and Grill Covers Update
ptjones replied to ptjones's topic in Accessories & Modifications
I used a web cam connected to Laptop so I could watch shutter operations with temps and speed driving on the FWY using ScanGauge. As posted before shutters don't open until either A/C is turned on or temps reach 210*F below 55mph and 215*F above 55mph approx. In my testing shutters are either open or closed no percentage of opened. BTW the Over Heating Message happens above 247*F. Removing the bottom Grill Cover lowers WT about 15*F and it looks like there is no need to remove Center Grill Cover. I have a version of the lower Grill Cover that is flush and there by more aero that I'm playing with.now. :) Paul -
Thanks, fortunately my wife isn't checking all my post.LOL Now all I need is a grammar checker, I guess you will have to do.LOL :lol2:  Paul

S So I'm assuming if you get your CMAX worked on there your can expect no problems in the future.LOL There must be a long line of cars waiting to be worked on. :lol2: Paul

Shutter operation with update and Grill Covers Update

Yes, and about a 3-4mpg improvement in mileage. I would recommend you get a ScanGauge to monitor water temps, I have one but you don't have too. :) Paul -
It's all magic. LOL That explains everything, someone is hexing some of our CMAX's so FORD needs to put a good spell on our CMAX's to protect them. I can't imagine I'm the first to think of this. LOL :future: :lol2:  Paul

So what is your tank looking like? How many miles so far? :) Paul

Energi or Hybrid - weight concerns
ptjones replied to Randi Borys's topic in Buying, Order and Leasing
It kinda looks that way unofficially(FORD isn't saying that), but that is what the math looks like. I know I have been over 825lbs a couple of times although not 250lbs worth. :) Paul -
Shutter operation with update and Grill Covers Update

The Velcro is a easy solution, The Shutter operation is safer than a switch and I don't it think can be improved on without getting it to seal better. The Grill Covers are a simple effective solution for the loss of heat and aero problems. BTW Shutters are closed all the time except when on FWY or A/C is on. :) Paul -
You didn't say what they did the first time to fix it. Personally I would have driven it to the Dealer and left it there if it would go that far. It would have saved you time getting a tow truck. It is amazing how many times turning off and turning back on fixes problems and there are no codes to check. It will be interesting to see what they come up with and the solution. :) Paul

Shutter operation with update and Grill Covers Update
ptjones replied to ptjones's topic in Accessories & Modifications
The new update changed the opening temp to 210*F at less than 55mph and 215*F at around 70mph. Grill Covers are attached by VELCO tabs so they can be easily installed and removed. The problem is that the Shutters don't seal very well, their operation is fine. Grill Covers fix the sealing problem which speeds up ICE heat up time saving gas plus improvement of aerodynamics of about 2mpg. :) Paul -

Energi or Hybrid - weight concerns

Well I did it, had my wife sit in the trunk and the rear lowered 1/2". So now we know what effects the HVB (250lbs) has on the CMAX. :) Paul -
Energi or Hybrid - weight concerns
ptjones replied to Randi Borys's topic in Buying, Order and Leasing
fomoto has both and I thought he could measure the difference in height in the back to see how much the springs compress with the added weight. I will try to get my wife to sit on back bumper and see how much it changes. LOL :) Paul -

Thanks for clearing that up fomoto. So in theory if the suspension parts are the same then the Hybrid has a 250lbs extra margin. I wonder how much lower in the back an Energi sits than Hybrid. :) Paul -

The only thing that makes sense is that FORD up graded suspension on the Energi for the additional weight. :) Paul -
Energi or Hybrid - weight concerns

This is getting more confusing as we go along, but I hope from dealers manual these are the numbers. Hybrid Gross Vehicle weight 4641lbs. - curb weight 3607lbs = 1034lbs. Energi " " " 4960lbs - " " 3850lbs = 1110lbs. Now the Tire Label says 825lbs which is "the combined weight of cargo and passengers" minus any Dealer authorized options. From these numbers it looks like FORD is building in some extra safety margin. I would think FORD would have to use some heaver duty springs and shocks or struts on Energi. I would think there would be a penalty for the Energy carrying around the extra 250lbs in both City and Hwy MPG's while in Hybrid Mode. IMO :) Paul -

Doing the math when you subtract for battery and gas it only leaves you 464lbs useful load, I would say that is a deal breaker. Putting you and your husband in the car you have probably gotten close to that not adding anything else. I won't recommend running over gross all the time, I think I have done it a couple of times with my Hybrid CMAX. ;) Paul -
Having groves in the rotors isn't unusual, but at 5,500mi. seems early for much wear. With 59Kmi on mine the rears are grooved a little bit the fronts pretty smooth. Grooves are caused by sand particles getting stuck in brake pads . Brakes grabbing is caused from rotors rusting which creates more friction for brake pads. :) Paul

It would look like there are a number of things that can cause this including operator error in my case. When you have many possibilities it makes it hard to pin down to a specific individual problem. Specially when it happens once in 3 to 6 months. It could be something like a bad solder joint in a control unit. I don't think there is any problems with 12v batteries other than they don't like to be drained down all the way. IMO :) Paul

"Warning: Don't try this! The safest distance to drive behind a big rig at 55 miles per hour is 150 feet. Driving any closer is insane because it puts you in the driver's blind spot and also does not give you enough time to respond if the big rig's driver changes speed. This post is for informational purposes only." Why does it matter if you are behind a Semi if he sees you or not? A Semi Truck takes 600ft to stop from 55mph and a CMAX takes 128ft from 60mph and it's the difference in speed between you and the Semi that's important, the first second the Semi hasn't slowed more than 10mph if that much, so how long does it take to go a hundred ft. about 6 seconds. Given these numbers it would take at least 3 seconds before you would hit the Semi from a hundred ft. back if you did nothing. As I said before you need to be very aware what is going on in front of you if you are going to be drafting. Don't do it if you are not going to put the effort in it. :) Paul

It is a challenge to put bike inside CMAX without removing the wheels, I have put my Hybrid bike(LOL) inside of my CMAX. Road bikes are some what easier to remove the wheels. I would rather put my bike outside if I wasn't going alot of miles. IMO :) Paul
