I'm wondering if Maxine is still learning. Also several members have noticed ICE wants to stay on when cold till it reaches 128degrees which i noticed this morning on MadMax. The Family is back together, YA! :) :yahoo: :shift: I'm working on improved Grill Cover to solve potential over heating problem. Paul

I wondering if the ICE computer is relearning again and will take some time to get up to speed. Try inflating tires to 48psi and don't use heater and make sure you are getting 98+% Brake score. It will take several starts and runs for some distance before the ICE computer figures things out. :) Paul

Best Engine RPM for minimal FE loss.
ptjones replied to John Sparks's topic in Hybrid Driving Tips & Tricks
I can loose up to 5mpg in the rain caused by the increased resistance of water on the road. The wider the tire, the more surface area, the more drag. :) Paul- 99 replies

It is important to know that the radiator doesn't do anything until the thermostat starts to open at 182degrees and I'm guessing fully open at 202degrees given that is the operating range. The only cooling that is being done is by the ICE radiating heat and air flow pulling it away down under the car. Unlike foam my Grill Covers allow some air flow which gives it a larger OT range. When temps get to hot you just install Summer Cover in about a minute. Jus is the only member that has been able to get hot enough to make this happen and he doesn't know the temp. I have been able to get to 237degrees during the summer in AZ and not get that message. If anyone has this happen all they have to do is slow down to 2Bars and problem temperately solved and then remove cover and install summer cover. BTW Grill Covers improve MPG's by better aerodynamics by about 2mpg's at HWY speeds. :) Paul

I wish we knew what temp this happened at on both gauges to educate Grill Cover users. Jus were you using inside or outside air? BTW Jus Grill Covers are worth about 2mpg at 70mph, well worth any potential problems IMO when all you need to do is slow down to two bars. I also supply a summer cover that solves this problem in about 15 sec. Paul

I think it is important to figure out what happened. Jus doesn't use my Grill Covers; not all covers work the same. 1. Jus what temp did you get too? MyTouch temp gauge and ScanGauge? 2. What type of gas? Reg,Premium or Pure Gas 3. How tight does your grill cover fit? 4. What temp were you running before you started climbing? 5. Were you using the heater? You can adjust ICE WT with heater. I think this event is important because the ICE computer notified you that there was a problem, so the system worked the way it was supposed to. The Handbook explains what happens as ICE temps reach unsafe levels and computer takes actions to protect the ICE. Jus activated the first step, which no one has reported before. If the computer works like it is supposed to Jus could have kept going and the worst that could have happen is the ICE would shut down. After cooling down it would restart and go until it heated up again. No harm no foul. Paul

There doesn't seem to be any direct connection between rpm's and bars, lots of variables. Paul- 99 replies

On my last two record runs I used the two bar method, I use a ScanGauge, most of time I'm 2000rpm's or less. That was 65.4mpg/909mi./13.9gal. Paul- 99 replies

Your SOC was on empty! LOL There is no reason not to have some kind of Grill Cover on with the cold weather. LOL Paul

No, I left them on all year long. Now with the update it runs about 10degrees warmer than before because shutters don't open till 215degreesWT, before they started to open at 190degrees. Remember operating temp for ICE was 202-212degrees, but my last AZ trip I was interchanging about every 100mi. full cover for cut out cover with no obvious difference in MPG's. My take away from this is it is very important to get to 202degreesWT for max MPG's , but getting as high as 237degreesWT has little to no effect on MPG's BTW it is still hard to reach 200degrees in the summer time and full covers with city driving. :) Paul

I have used clear packing tape and it can leave a little residue that is easily removed with lacquer thinner. Remember to monitor MyView temp gauge. We can get you covers when you are ready. Paul

I HAVE FOUND THE ILLUSIVE MPG SWEET SPOT!

For my testing I used a 14.4mi Fwy test loop so I could control the variables as much as possible when testing. It was the only way to get credible results. Paul -

Great! I'm glad you two are back together. :yahoo: It will be two weeks when I get back from Phoenix before I can pick up MADMAX, then the GANG will be back together again,YA! :shift: Paul

Welcome aboard, I was wondering if you knew when ford would start releasing 2014 CMAX's. I heard from my dealer that the cars have been built, but are going through quality inspection. :) Paul

Go to MyView in display mode and set Empower for right side and Temp for left side by toggling up or down. :) Paul

It's going to be another couple of weeks before I get MADMAX as my wife calls it back from the Body Shop, darn. I have some nifty idea's for under body air dam etc. when I get my car back. When I get a chance I will post some pics of what a CMAX looks like torn apart and some of the new pieces to put back on. It is a very complicated car and current repair cost up to $6500 now. :) And to repeat as others have said Grill Covers are the single largest improvement in MPG's and heating your car that your can do whether you tape up the Grills or buy covers from me. There is no reason you have to suffer. :) Paul

I came up with the idea for Grill Covers and believe I'm only place to get them. :) Message me and I will give you the details. Also I have a few threads on this topic here. Paul

Shutter operation with update and Grill Covers Update
ptjones replied to ptjones's topic in Accessories & Modifications
The only way FORD can invalidate your warranty is they can prove that the Grill Covers caused a problem. I can't see a scenario were FORD isn't responsible ,because the ICE computer is designed to protect itself no matter what and the Inverter has it's own cooling system and it never gets hot. Remember Grill Covers don't block all the air from getting in thru the radiator, just most. I drove this Summer in AZ up long grades with AC on and 105+degrees and only got to 137degreesWT. The top white line on Smart temp Gauge is about 145degrees, so if FORD isn't worried about it then I don't thing we need too. IMO :) Grill Covers sure make a big difference now with low temps! Paul -
Fog lights / Retrofit
ptjones replied to Hybrid dude's topic in Glass, Lenses, Lighting, Mirrors & Wipers
I'm going to have my complete front cover, grills ,etc from my wrecked CMAX, it's in good shape to try somethings on. I will use it to test my Grill Covers fit when making them. I would think about making an aero fog light instead using your existing grill. :) Paul -
Wind chill affects people not CMAX's, but that is pretty darn cold and your MPG's are what you would expect for those conditions. Just for an experiment cover up the center and lower grills with tape or cardboard and see what happens. :) Paul
