  1. Thats interesting. As you and both drive to Mammoth, we should be able to compare apples to apples here but for that you travel further to SD and you probably drive 15 to 395, right? As versus me, who drive 14 to 395 thru Mojave. Both routes have their share of uphill so it should be awash, imo. Now, I concur driving from our homes to Mammoth will be in the 30s MPG, given that most of the time, theres a north head wind (especially blowy thru Mojave) and the cold of the evening drive - not conducive for hybrid driving. You stated you had 35MPG to Mammoth in the Sat morning and at 2,500 on the odo, that sounds about right. I did one trip similar to Mammoth at around your odo and I got 33.4MPG and that was a brutal -4F when I arrived at Mammoth snowing in just before midnight. However, my last trip was 37.4MPG, not as cold as -4F but still in the 20s when I got there, again at night. Now coming back, you should have got high 30s or low 40s MPG. My last trip - last weekend actually - I had 46.7MPG Mammoth to home and I averaged 41.4 MPG overall for that weekend. Now before you rip into me for your standard on what you consider fair speed, I drive mostly 60-65mph to Mammoth, its my choice as I've been pulled over for doing 68mph by CHP just past Independence and you know that 395 is just laid out with CHP galore and I have no intention to pay the Counties any more money. I think you'll find that as your engine breaks the 3000 and then 4000 and 5000, you'll find improvements in the mileage - to a point that you drive to the best of the hybrid's abilities. As many threads here have shown the EPA 47MPG is at 60mph, and going at 70mph and expecting 47MPG is, frankly, nutz (and don't forget its loaded and heavy so thats another factor). Mind you, I have charged my batts to the max and keep 'em 90% high and throw the eco-cruise at 67mph above the EV threshold and it will sustain 40-45MPG or more on flats or even more on slight downgrades - the battery level is critical if you are going to run just on ICE but Max will not reach this high battery level purely on eco-cruise, you have to coax it up there with P&G, thats what I find. Oh yeah, my Max was fully loaded with gear, wife et al so its heavy, I don't think the EPA factored the additional weights when the 47MPG was derived and to get 41.4MPG average over 580 miles to Mammoth and back in the conditions nature throws at us is a winner, winner, winner. YMMV ;) Interesting indeed :)
  2. TxWally, thats hard to see, can you repost it? Look like you're on the right track - keep those batteries high and the performance should increase. Thats the biggest lesson I learnt in my 5000+ (it's like 5725 miles now) driving this lovely car. Use all the tricks - Pulse & Glide to keep it high and watch the ICE run at 40-45MPG at > 65mph on the flats. Look like your engine is way, way new...got sometime to perfect your hybrid driving  Yeah, thats the subtext of this thread...40 miles on almost nuthing fuel :wub2:
  3. Adair, not me, it was CMax-Jaxon...this was his post: http://fordcmaxhybridforum.com/index.php?/topic/851-low-mpg-on-a-few-more-reviews/page-3&do=findComment&comment=7120 But straight to the artcile.... http://www.carrentingreviews.com/2013/01/23/2013-ford-c-max-sel-hybrid/ Thats like my car except I have the DARK interior....great for a snowboarder (we're always considered being on the dark side :nonono: )
  4. Ha...I went thru something similar to this with our Jaguar sensors. Tilt the car downward the front sensor will trigger off, time to hit the P button too. Also those sensors come in black and the dealer has to spray on the paint to the exact measurement otherwise the sensors will not work properly - so its a costly exercise, at least in the Jag world. May be Ford has a cheaper version? Adair...need to move to somewhere warmer dear, less issues and more mileage. TX? Would not recommend CA as beautiful as it is here, too many fools, myself included ;)

    Gas

Well, learn something new everyday... I've been using the costco gas for more than a decade now in all our familiy cars including a Camry, 3 x Jaguar Vanden Plas and not a single clogged engine or fuel filter from use and I can say Costco gas is used 99.99% of the time. Now Arco is a different story, we had huge issues with that company in the older Jags. I am sure there are merits in the top tier gas, but each to their own I guess. Good reading and very informative discussions fellas
  6. I do u-turns all the time in my business so it's not that big of a deal. One more turn on the wheel and just enjoy the rear vision camera - god that thing is awesome as I can back close, close to the bins and not worry about hitting it. ;)
  7. Yeah, check it out...that is one FUN rd to drive but take it from north to south as its downhill. Take the 118 and get off at Rocky Peak Rd and then head west to Box Canyon. Its a little hill you need to climb and then its all down hill and watch for on coming traffic. Enjoy the flying pig...you'll know what I mean if you truly drove it and also enjoy charging your batteries to the max ;)
  8. I had something similar, MFT would not turn off and I was about to go shopping at costco - so I just said ft, locked Max and walked away. Came back 1/2 hr later and everything was off and MFT behaved after that. I think its something to do with the voice command paddle that triggers all sorts of weird issues with the MFT.

    Gas

Same here, we have notoriously high gas prices. Even costco is going up and up which is where my family buys our gas 99.99% of the time and we both use the 91 octane (phew, nearly typed in RON there... ;) ). I am sure someone will come along and tell me that 91 is overkill, but my answer will always be that the extra 20c per gallon more than pays for itself with my ever increasing mileage. Plus to me Max feels much peppier & responsive... :shift:
  10. It was more money than I cared for and the fact that it did not open, kinda seal it off the deal for me. So I do not know what I am missing but I've had 3 cars with the moon roof and rarely do I use them even here in sunny LA, or cruising Malibu, Sunset. asb - get some rainx, that stuff is suppose to be awesome from what I hear.
  11. Congratulations asb, you'll :wub2: the car. You're on the right track as your car is so new, it will take time for the engine and components to break in so stick it into eco-cruise and just enjoy the ride. Once you're familiar with it and want to play - have FUN. Remember, keep that battery high and don't drain it till its out. I use to do that and not realizing that the ICE does work alot better even above the EV speed with the battery up high or nearly full. Keep posting asb and lets us know what you think of the car and how you're going with it...
  12. I would like one of those "scheduled maintenance" now and then...don't get 'em so its the master reset which is a pain in the derrière :redcard:
  13. Phew I am home! Great day of snowboarding and driving Max back. So here's the summarized goya: 290 miles San Fernando to Mammoth and 290 miles back. Elevation change from 500ft to over 7800 ft to Mammoth Lakes and back. Temps from 60F to 24F and no discrenible head/tail winds on this trip. Now..I got 37.4 MPG going there and 46.x MPG coming back for an overall of 41.4MPG according to Max's calculation - the BEST YET out of the 3 trips I've done, with Max fully loaded with ski/board gear, food etc. Woohoo.... :happy feet: What did I learn this time? Keep your battery level as high as possible especially if you're going above 65+mph (no more than 70mph), I've seen my Max go 40-45MPGs on flats and with a slight downhill, at those speed, I've seen it go above 50+MPGs. Don't fight physics and eco cruise 55-60mph and enjoy the climb...and boy, Max can climb :)
  14. Welcome to the forum, congratz on your CMax and thanks for posting your vote and say. My suggestion is that you take some time and do some reading here since alot of the actual CMax owners have posted a lot of particularly useful links including dissecting this CR driven EPA issue to death, as well as more useful, real experiences about their own car - cars they own and not just test drive for 2 weeks or have it for one lazy weekend drive around the coast. These owners are from various locations of this great country - some are in the colder north (Adair/Laurel/DonH) and obviously do not get the rated MPG due to the colder conditions while others are in more warmer temperatures such as Georgia/California and are getting around or above the MPG. Also note 2 posters here (ptjones and myself) have already got more than 600 miles on a single tank (look in the Lounge for the 600 mile club thread) and that is with real world driving, not a test loop circuit. So its there but like everything, it takes time to break the engine in, temperatures condusive for hybrids (not below zero), and more so - teaching yourself and learning how to drive hybrids and not GUNNING IT from red light to redlight as much as the CMax is very capable of gunning it. So yeah, stick around, enjoy this lovely CMax community we have here and learn
  15. No freshies this time, storm not coming in till later this week but MM has an awesome base and snow quality is nice. Scottys, 14, 9, 5, 23.... all rawk, not one bad run, no rocks but don't run into them. Some poor sod was either killed or badly injured under dropout chutes, left a big pool of blood. Yeah, I :wub2: that grade going south, full batts but CHP is always there.. roll baby roll  . Oooops sorry for the diversion, back to the topic at hand...
  16. Ooops that's what we use in Aus. Thanks for the clarification :)
  17. Excellent article. So as we prepare for the summer heat, it looks like it's imperative we use the AC as it's part of the BMS. Very different to our habit of saving EV by opening the windows instead of AC. Hmmmmmh.
  18. There is a stretch of road that I have to take to drive to Mammoth... 14. This is in the high desert and given the right conditions, its black ice hell, lots of crashes and its single lane both ways. Never fun on ice u can't see. Be safe, go slow so if something happens, less damage or chance to recover.
  19. 5k in those temps ain't bad, I run the 5k & 10k and heat is the worst. Adair, hope your daughter did well. Tip....go check out the Skechers Go-run shoes, best running shoes I've ever ran in, super fit, light, great support and low profile. The hump takes a little getting used to but it works, it does minimize the heel strike.
  20. Its $4.73 here at Mammoth for 91ron, shocker. Gas is going up though but no more silly <1gal top up. Got laughed at by the CFO.
  21. That would be out of this world !!! 650 I think I can do but 700 is tough unless this engine totally opens up, or I run 50 psi tires. 700 would light a fire under all the doubters especially the Prii fanboyz who luv to mock that Ford "well ford rigged the epa and cmax r only getting 38 real world..consumer report..etc...blah...blah...blah". For the record, what ptjones and I did should forever dispell 47 mpg is a pie in the sky, we just blew that out of the water  If anything with sensible driving and time/patience' it's achievable. Not speaking for ptjones but I am not a fanatic hypermiler, just someone who is still getting to know the car and terrain. Let's go for it
  22. Posting from Mammoth, had a 4 mpg improvement driving up this time vs prior. San Fernando to Mojave, 40 mpg, temps in the mid-low 40s Bishop, 39.7 mpg, temps mid 30s Toms Place, got killed 36.2 mpg, temps 28 Mammoth, 37.4 mpg, temp 24. EV mode worked fine in the colder temp but my ICE was warmed up....but here's my issue with the ccold', batts were 3/4 and could not sustain 60mph. I did get OK in EV at the 35 mph driving thru town. 4 mpg is pretty good, same load as my prior posted 2 Mammoth threads but my odo clicked over 5000 miles this time. Looking forward to the derived back, I'm managed 44 mpg last time so this should be similar, being a Monday drive back should have less than the past 2 Sunday ones. Snow is awesome BTW...
  23. Laughs on me fellas ;) Tonight, we are once again driving from San Fernando to Mammoth Lakes and being that I put in 40 miles since my last fuel up (all of yesterday), I thought I would top Max's gas tank again before I leave. I looked at the Trip1, says 40 miles, 0.8 gallons consumed - ah ha - I can at least get a gallon in there. Cool. Paid the gas at Costco, it was $3.95 for 91RON started...and then stopped. 0.3 gallon. Huh? As usual, I top it to the quarter (long story) and damn well overfilled it. So this was not anywhere near the 0.8 reported... Now, I know I will get a earful from my CFO for the $1.50 gas on the business card - but at least i have a full tank, well, lest the 0.1 gas I consumed to drive back. :runaway: Silly? You betcha but I set a personal record of the smallest tank up ever in my driving history - $1.50 to tank up. PS....the sub story here is that 40 miles on that piddly amount of 0.3 gas, that still awes me. And fuelly REFUSED to accept my tank up. PS2 Broke 5000 miles on the odo, I should not be :happy feet: but what the hell, it's Friday  have a great weekend :)
