  1. There was another thread discussing this already. For me, it has always been like 0.3, that is, pumped gas reported more than used gas. However, my last tank it was reverse. Pumped gas reported 12.75 while used gas reported 12.83. Yaah...better MPG than reported. Go figure...
  2. Lol...here's my take from the CMax end.... I've done so many 600 mile tanks with my personal best at 641 - that I believe a 700 mile tank is possible with the following caveat: 1. It will have to be limited to surface street only for the entire tank, 35 or 45 speed limit roads. The CMax is SUPER efficient here on these roads, 2. No freeways and no mountains, just flats. If we have an owner who drives and lives in such an environment, they can do the 700. 650 easily and the last 50 miles in red and P&G to the max and bring a towel cause its a lot of nervy sweat at this range and more (been there)...presuming they have more than 12,000 on the odo with the engine as driving in such an environment, your ICE would be used far, far less and therefore take even longer. Jus my 2c :shift:
  3. Faster than a Bugati Veyron or the even faster... Sometimes, we need to get out of the FE...MPG lane and get some fast, fresh air...enjoy, my fellow Maxers :)
  4. Don't forget the sun shades. these are big windows, tinting...MIami heat... ;) By the way, 41 posts for a pre-owner is pretty impressive...can't wait till we all get the news of your delivery
  5. Laurel - excellent post! Well said :) I dunno about that, I have driven my neighbours' 2010 Prius and was not at all impress with its mileage and I used it to for my appraisal runs (like I do now with my CMax, going over the same terrain). May be if I became a Prius hypermiler I could extract more but the range really let me down to a point where I thought I had enuf gas but cruising to the fuel pumps on fumes...scared me as it was not my car. :wub2: my neighbours though, great people who bailed me out more than a few times
  6. LizM, you're welcome. This is one of the most picturesque drives in CA, it is stunning....the best part is coming down from Toms Place to Bishop where you see an entire valley, marvel at the snow capped Sierra range and contrast it with the flatness of the valleys, the ranches in the background...and your jaw drops in awe at the creation of such fine majestic beauty. I never, ever tire of this moment and if I can share it with all of you, I will.... :)
  7. Nice find Laurel!!!! I am going to pinch it and add it to this thread: Welcome to the website, some helpful videos for you & your new CMax I'll get it pinned one day, when I know how to ;)
  8. Thanks, appreciate your reading my thread - hope you got some great info out of it. Great question! And this is my take on it... 1. You can't fight physics when you're going uphill. And essentially from the start of my trip from San Fernando, you are climbing once you hit Via Princessa to Mojave (known as the high desert) to Lone Pine to Bishop to Toms Place and finally Mammoth Lakes. Steep grades, I stick to the right hand side and keep my power to the 2 bars and essentially that keeps my speed between 55 and 60 mph. Thats what trucks have to do in CA anyway so we're all used to it, not bother anyone as it's dual lanes. Plus, from my past trips, the long steep grades like Sherwin (north of Bishop) will so easily chew your gas if going faster than 63mph - and in the end, what for? I am only giving up like 15 mins difference if I speed like I did in my gas Jaguar Vanden Plas or I cruise up a hill as economically as possible and conserve gas for the return trips and around the Mammoth town, cause Mammoth is a very expensive town to gas up (as compares say the Indian place in Independence where I traditionally gas up and enjoy some Hagen Daz ;) ) Here is the scary stuff, I think I can do a full 570 miles fully loaded trip from home to Mammoth and back but if I run out of gas, my wife is gonna KILL ME (she would not understand the carry spare tank) but it will be dependent on the weather completely and whether we do some around town trips. That would be the ultimate coolness as we have never achieved this with either the 98 Camry or the Vanden Plas. Had Ford given the CMaxs a 14 gallon or even better, a 15 gallon tank - OMFG - this will be a done deal  . I may try this when we go up there in the summer, we'll see. 2. Flats - I have 2 choices: eco-cruise ICE High MPG (speeds betwen 68 and 70mph). I use this mainly on single lane like on the 14 between Red Rock Canyon and the 14/395 junction where it splits back to dual lanes. This won't p*ss off anyone as I am a tad above the speed limit and TRUST ME, you don't want to go more than 68mph as I have been pulled over and given a warning for doing 70mph on a 65mph speed limit by the CHP outside Indepedence when they have their "No Tolerance" weekend. Inside sources also tell me they are running these programs more due to CA going broke and it's a money spinner for the state, lets just leave it at that. On other times, I will use P&G like the stretch between Mojave and Jaw Bone (Red Rock) as I know there is a slight downslope over a ton of nice range of miles. I pulse to 65 and let it drop to 55 and recycle. This is a dual lane so I am not p*ssing off anyone. If I am too busy verbally jousting with the wifey, I stick it on eco ICE High MPG - winner, winner. Knowing the roads and I do since I have been driving this stretch for more than a decade, is key to maximizing the FE but always remember, you can't fight physics and sometimes a flat road is not flat, its uphill and an optical illusion, your CMax will tell u that.... Coming home is a different strategy, its reverse - I paid my dues going up so I am collecting the dividends coming back - and it shows each and every time. I use the slope as much as I can and I actually do more manual ICE High MPGs as it gives me the choice to switch over to P&G based on the road, like going between Olancha to the 14/395 junction (now this 10 mile stretch before the junction is CHP radar alley - I see up to 5+ CHP with lasers as your speed down). To me, having a hybrid and driving like a lead footed gas engine makes as much sense as standing on a tee box and teeing off with a pitching wedge for a Par 5, you're swinging like crazy (burning gas) on the long hole for nuthin. Take advantage of your car and max it - hit the driver 340 yards and then hit the pitching wedge for an Eagle  You know, hypermiling is so much my normal driving habit now, just taking advantage of the road and using your experience to max the FE. I am not sure how I would drive a gas engine car since I can't coast/regen... :sos:
  9. If you're using fuelly like many of us, that has an MPG too...so that's 6, too much for us mere simpletons like me. KISS folks, jus make sure it works for u  By the way, funny enuf, my lifetime concurs with the fuelly more or less, about 0.5 difference...woopie doo ;)
  10. Its in the Acronym thread Post #1...click on the link in my sig ;)
  11. Thats awesome catsailor  Good to hear stories like this from the east coast where the weather seems more colder and us Maxers on the west coast. Its all there but Maxers just need to understand the car if they want to drive FE or otherwise. Soon, you'll break the 500 mile a tank and who knows.... ;)
  12. Thats the beauty of the CMax - its completely up to you HOW you want to drive the car, FE or normal or fang it. No buttons to press, just u and the gas pedal.
  13. Hey thanks zhackwyatt - I did find the FAQ that showed me how to do this...yaah :)
  14. UPDATED Post #1 with Trip 5 data (see the picture graphs) Conclusion - it appears the engine breakin has settled. Pretty much the same average MPGs for the trip (see graphs). From this, I would say the CMax engine starts to really break in from 3000 to 11,000 miles. Still - an average of 45MPGs in Trip 4 and 5 carrying a FULL LOAD, 500 ft to 7,200 ft elevation difference, is pretty darn impressive for a Ford and with the heater running (thanks wifey ;) ) as well  Enjoy :)
  15. altabrig....agree. 55 is not safe in the main freeways near LA. But between 60 and 65 is better - especially if you P&G. U know this but most folks not in CA don't - trucks driving in CA have to do max 55 (reality:60mph) so it's not like CA drivers has never seen slow traffic on the right lane. Or start bugging people. A lot of them are gardners on the way to the jobs as well. I've never had issues with the right lane in my FE mode but I also put on my SPEEDY mode with the eco-cruise ICE High MPG as well when I need do...isn't it wonderful to have a car that gives good FE in whichever mode YOU decide to drive... :)
  16. Someone wanted a pic of my Maxine in the shot...so here it is....valley in the distance is Simi. This is the Getty Villa, from the Pacific Coast Highway aka PCH. Funny enough I have never been there but I heard it is FABULOUS and INCREDIBLE. Gotta get a reservation to go there as its very limited parking - so don't forget if u intend to visit Los Angeles. Do Pigs fly? Especially the Pink Ones with glowing eyes.....they do exists!!!!! Box Canyon Special. [ Accident I saw today...2 cars collided and ran up the corner. I didn't see the actual collision but came probably about a 5 mins later....dang, its dangerous. Burbank, this afternoon as I was heading to Costco Burbank to fill up my Maxine running on fumes...literally.
  17. I talked to Galpin Ford again this afternoon, and yeah, they do acknowledge having a problem with the navigation and the update so we're all in a holding pattern for now. The top managers all know about it so its not leaving us early adopters in the lurch. I'm sorry for being so brief....for those who are looking as to where it is...see the red box below in the syncmyride.com screen (after you have logged in): Follow the instructions. You need a usb drive and then it's pretty easy. Be warned though - the 2nd step process afterward (confirming your version) is pretty convoluted in the sense that it never acknowledges your upload of the XML file (HINT: take a copy of the .xml file that is in the USB drive just in case). It does work but hey... :runaway:
  18. It's fixed now! 45MPG...gotta :wub2: that
  19. This... 4/12/13 640.0 162.75 3.9 4.099 35% Somehow, a naughty "6" got in my gallons used, the receipt said 12.75 gallons and it ended up reporting "162.75" gallons used :runaway: I have emailed fuelly so hopefully, they can delete this record and I can re-enter :)
  20. New personal record: Unadjusted. My actual tank fill up was 12.746, interesting that Maxine reported more gas used. Usually, its the other way around ;) Updated Post#1. This one I was sweating...it broke all barriers and I had some mountains to climb as I went along Kanan ro Malibu and then Topanga back to the valley thru to Burbank Costco for a tank up. It was a beautiful, beautiful day along Malbu and I wished I had time to jump into the beach area and enjoy...but alas no.
  21. Go to syncmyride.com and follow the instruction on checking your version there...
  22. manticore - hey CONGRATZ dude on your new car, you certainly picked a good time to buy thats for sure  Nice to see someone else knowing where the heck these places are that I a describing. PS Go check out my picture thread, should be some places very familiar to u ;)

    Test Drive

Welcome to the forum :) There is an expression - there are many ways to skin a cat. And the CMax is certainly a great cat to optimize FE or just FANG to your heart's content. Here are some tips for handling the Freeway drive in a CMax. The first thread are testing I did on the various methods to maximize FE on the freeway - using eco-cruise, using P&G (if u don't know what P&G means, click on my signature link ;) ) or "ICE High MPG" Eco Cruise vs P&G vs ICE High MPG The General also posted a great thread on an "eco-cruise" version of ICE High MPG: I have found the illusive MPG sweet spot! I switch between a manual and eco-cruise ICE High MPG in my long drives - the key with the CMax is the high battery - this car SINGS when the battery is high. This is what ICE High MPG looks like: What you should see is the speed above 65 mph, the instant MPG dances between the 40s and 60s. If you change to the ENGAGE mode, you can see the EV motor assisting the ICE at the cruise speed. NOTE: this works on flats and downhills but on uphill where more power is needed, it will drop to 20s and 40s due to the larger power requirement. As usual, if you have more question - please feel free to ask away, there are a lot of very knowledgeable owner-drivers here and WELCOME and good luck with your decision :)
