  1. I don't believe 12M02 requires anything. It's simply a warranty extension on the hardware and any software updates for 5 years. You can go to support.Ford.com, register and check if your MFT software is up to date. If not, you can do the update at home by following the instructions there. Dealer loaners are at the whim of the dealer. Most don't provide it as they don't get reimbursed from Ford for it. If you are paying for considerable work, many times a dealer will provide a loaner. Ford is not required to provide loaners for warranty service as stated in the new car limited warranty but many times if the service required is beyond one day a loaner may be provided per the Recall / FSA item or if you complain to Ford.
  2. Here's a calculation I made on the height of jack needed if a rear tire is completely flat a month or so ago in another thread. The height to the bottom of the rear jack point pinch weld is about 6 5/8" above the ground. The rear rim appears to be about 3" above the ground normally. So, with a complete flat tire the rim might be only a 1/2 inch off the ground or the axle has been lowered around 2 1/2 inches. The difference between the front and rear axle is about 9 feet and the jack point is 2 1/2 feet in front of the rear axle. So, the jack point would be (6.5/9) * 2.5" = 1.8 inches lower than normal. Let's say 2" lower for 2/10" safety factor. That would put the clearance at about 4 5/8" from bottom of pinch weld to ground. A typical scissors jack will have a slot for the pinch weld to ride in. So, to be safe so that one can slide the jack in the pinch weld. I would try to find a scissors jack that is close to 4 inches to also account for the possibility that the ground could be uneven and perhaps raised. If one is going to carry a spare, why not also just carry a floor jack instead of a scissors jack. My floor jack is 3 inches high.
  3. A quick check shows it virtually the same as I posted in the link above (insurance or no insurance). ;) Windshield - $265 (list $715) Install kit - $30 Labor - $124 Total -$419 + tax
  4. Use ramps. Tray comes off. Maybe 1/2 dozen screws. Filter and plug easy to get at. No special issues. Walmart usually stocks the correct motorcraft filter and Mobil 1 0W20 AFE oil In 5 quart jug. Less than $30 total.
  5. Please file a report with NHTSA at safercar.gov This may be a one-off event but if NHTSA gets enough complaints on such an issue they may open an investigation.
  6. I posted the myth buster test results on drafting before. I've tried drafting in my Jetta TDI behind big rigs and do see an immediate jump in instantaneous FE by about 20% at about 50 feet (about 3 car lengths) but as the warning says below, the big rig driver can't see you at that distance. When I would back down so that I could see the side mirror on the rig, there was no distinguishable difference in the instantaneous FE. Looks like myth busters rule is a little shy of the 2 second rule. :) Besides the big rigs generally drive the speed limit. That would add an second night stay on my trips back East and even with a very optimistic fuel savings of 10 gallons of fuel at $3.50 / gallon (38 gallons instead of 48 gallon in my TDI) isn't even 1/3 of the cost of lodging (with pet) and meals. "Warning: Don't try this! The safest distance to drive behind a big rig at 55 miles per hour is 150 feet. Driving any closer is insane because it puts you in the driver's blind spot and also does not give you enough time to respond if the big rig's driver changes speed. This post is for informational purposes only."
  7. I'd say 1) is the grille shutters. It's easy to check. Just look into the grille while someone gets in and starts the car. You will see them moving when you hear the noise. 2) Yes, the a/c compressor is loud especially when it first starts up and you have the door open. But, what level of loudness is normal on startup? Inside, the car it's barely perceptible to me with the fan on. My buzzing sound does decrease in intensity after initial startup likely as the load on the compressor decreases and will stop if one turns the climate control off. The question is when is the buzzing noise deemed "excessive" - whatever that means in the TSB. I would say that if the loud buzzing noise continues (doesn't decrease) for a several minutes after initially starting the car, that might be excessive and the system is low on refrigerant or there's a restriction. If low on refrigerant, the compressor has to continue to operate at a higher level to cool / keep the car cool than if the system had the correct charge of refrigerant. The dealer certainly can check for refrigerant leaks, evacuate the system, and recharge with the correct charge by weight.
  8. Well, let's see at 75 mph on the AZ freeways that rule means about 8 cars per mile per lane. ;) I'm not sure there is such a thing as a safe following distance rule. Everyone has an opinion. I've heard of the one car length for every 10 mph rule which is what I try to follow but in heavy traffic it's likely drivers will be pulling between you and the vehicle in front of you as they jockey for a better position.
  9. IMO, paying for Navigation Map and software updates is adding insult to injury. One first has to pay $1200 for an upgraded radio and Navigation (even though one might only want navigation) - highly "injurious" and then $120 every year or so for map updates - highly "insulting". :) How can Garmin and others offer lifetime software and map upgrades for a one time nominal price increase of a GPS navigation unit and Ford can't? ;)
  10. Welcome aboard. Next time it happens take a picture of the screen for documentation since apparently no codes are stored. There's a Ford rep (Ashley) that monitors this site and will likely ask you to contact her. Perhaps she (or you can call Ford CS) can help resolve the issue.
  11. Yes, Geico includes full glass coverage at the $100 deductible comprehensive level for which I pay $54.22 per year. It's not included on my other vehicle with $500 deductible comprehensive at $21.74 per year. So, it was less than $33 to get full glass and lower deductible on the C-Max. Also, for those that don't know the C-Max windshield is also expensive. See here.
  12. You put the AC slider the wrong wary. :) Move it to always on and you'll get 42.2 mpg.
  13. Good find. AC slider doesn't work correctly. I get better FE with AC on. The difference (assuming they reversed the effect) between no AC and always is not accurate for Phoenix (0.7 mpg on the highway). The cars are warmed up (their tests are about 90 miles on warmed up engine) so if one take short trips in colder weather, the results will be lower. They may have a good base of data but they really need to add additional sliders at minimum for length of trip, cold start, and ambient temperature, average speed. Otherwise, this is really not much better than the EPA estimates. For example, I can't move the sliders to get my average of 41 mpg. The lowest I can get is 42.2 and the conditions don't describe my driving style. It's actually going to be further off from fuelly numbers than the epa estimates.
  14. You are likely experiencing the benefits of FORD EPAS with no free play and "nibble" and "drift" control. :) IMO, you have to get used to EPAS. It is a different feeling especially in crosswinds. I think that with hands at bottom of steering wheel one feels more of and can't control as easily the movement of the wheel like hands in 10-2 position. Ford says most drivers once they get used to EPAS like it.
  15. You certainly should try for warranty coverage as it's an expensive windshield if you don't have glass coverage. It can't hurt. I had my windshield replaced but it was due to a stone chip. Here's the post on it including what is likely will cost if you don't have glass coverage or Ford won't cover it..
  16. Performance of the Prius is better than CT200H except in handling. The reliability of the C-Max is not good. ll
  17. Katharine welcome to the forum. P0A2F is traction motor overheating. I usually don't defend Ford, but this "transmission" issue surely could be the result of your sons actions. The dealer initially fixed the damaged line which you paid for. It wouldn't surprise me if the traction motor and perhaps other components inside the transmission were damaged from such overheating (likely due to the line being kinked / broken) and hence the transmission being operated with no cooling and perhaps no lubrication. The car has a transmission fluid pump bolted to the transmission case. The transmission fluid pump is turned by the input shaft connected to the engine and circulates transmission fluid through the transmission for lubrication and through an oil-to-air cooler mounted in the front of the radiator for transmission cooling. The transmission fluid pump only operates when the engine is running. Also, the transmission is part of the powertrain. So, I don't understand what you mean. Are you saying that Ford won't cover the transmission under the "limited" powertrain warranty? Limited means that there are conditions listed in the warranty that are not covered. Misuse of the car is not covered.
  18. You don't need a battery with a high CCA for the C-Max. You want a battery with a high reserve capacity rating. See this.
  19. I've been test driving the Prius since the 2008 MY hoping each year that Toyota would make a Prius that I would like but for the FE (who can't like the FE). I also test drove the Lexus HS250h when it came out and didn't like it (my Jetta TDI was significantly better). Then, when the CT200h came out, I thought this might be the car so I stopped to look at it. I sat in it, looked around, got out, and told the salesman I'm not interested. He said don't you want to test drive it, I said no because this is a Prius in Lexus clothing and left. Then, thanks to darrelld's postings on TDIClub about his newly acquired C-Max, I said I think I have to make a trip to the Ford dealer. To which he responded: "You won't regret making that trip. " So a few week later after doing research I set out to test drive the Prius V and C-Max. I stopped to test drive the Prius V first and again was not impressed with the Prius. About 3 hours later I was driving my C-Max home. Like I've said several times: the Sal and Family commercial is right on - whether it be a Prius or a CT200h.
  20. I recalled incorrectly - there are 2 triangles on each side. That what happens when one gets old. Thanks, fbov.
  21. I've done that when rotating tires. IIRC, it's the only jacking point marked by a triangle on the black rocker panel moulding. I used a floor jack and stands (just in case) and did it on my concrete driveway. I'm not sure I'd trust any old jack lifting the complete side of the car on the generally unstable berm of a highway. My floor jack requires about a 3 inch clearance which seems that it would be adequate at the jack point if one rear tire was flat. The rim appears to be about 3" above the ground normally. So, with a complete flat tire the rim might be only a 1/2 inch off the ground or the axle has been lowered around 2 1/2 inches. The difference between the front and rear axle is about 9 feet and the jack point is 2 1/2 feet in front of the rear axle. So, the jack point would be (6.5/9) * 2.5" = 1.8 inches lower than normal or there should be about 4 inches of room to insert a jack. So, a 3" jack should be no issue.
  22. Here's what the manual says below. Regenerative braking is always active during normal braking including when friction brakes are used except when the battery is full and the anti-lock braking feature is activated (working) - to me means when ABS is preventing wheel lockup or other adverse condition. I think it's simply a matter of semantics. I always refer to the braking control systems as ABS to distinguish ABS equipped cars from cars that don't have ABS not whether the feature is being activated. Normal operation of modern braking systems can proportion braking to front wheels and rear wheels.
  23. My before reset % wwere close to my after but I didn't write down the numbers. My rear rotors feel like you describe - slight ridges across the surface not perfectly smooth. My fronts feel virtually smooth. But again my rears have a very slight ridge on the edge and no ridge on the fronts. The brake pads would likely be a better indicator of wear. But, I doubt I will ever have to change pads or rotors. Next time I rotate tires I'll take a better look at everything - about 4-6 months from now. .
