I HAVE FOUND THE ILLUSIVE MPG SWEET SPOT!
Jus-A-CMax replied to Generalbeluga's topic in Hybrid Driving Tips & Tricks
Gen - great find mate :) , its should not be that illusive as I suspect its got to do with a high battery - which may reason why u said to run this 1 mile or 2 in pure ICE to charge up the batts. Like to hear your comments on the battery situation with your CMax and this find as I think your batts are high (above 80%) which is condusive to this condition. I'll certainly play with Maxine tomorrow. Hey, have you done a run on Box Canyon yet from 118 down to Valley Circle? -
:happy feet: Nice one, mega mega congratulations Adair & Rachel...me like these ladies  Temps do make a difference but the engine breaking in also contributes a pretty penny into the pot. I just got back from Mammoth Mountain after a 4 days of powder, powder & then bluebird days of boarding/skiiing with my wifey...anyway, I broke my own MPG record to Mammoth and back for > 280 miles each way from 500 ft to about 7200 odd ft elevation and vice versa. Its ludicrous mpg, especially the leg back and lets just say that Fords' 47MPG was conservative..and we're not talking piddly miles either... ;)

Montreal...wow, you're in the wrong spot...all the hybrids are down south - major markets like Los Angeles & San Francisco. Anyway, good luck with it :)

What's your odo? Also learn to feather your pedal, you don't typically need 100% EV when u are cruising, plus try keeping 0-15mph EV and then kick in the gas, that saves u a lot of gas. Pulse & glide is another fun game to use. Also peruse the Fuel Mileage section of this site if u haven't already. I am running 45 psi in my Maxine. Pm me if u have any other q, I'll be glad to help :)

Ha...welcome to the forum AudenHoggart :) The answer is to drive it normally but try to keep away from "yellowing" the power bar in the EMPOWER mode, you should not have needs for that much instant power, or very rarely. Eco cruise is very handy as well. Also, take a look at my 2 Mammoth threads here (use search or click my username and topics) with 3 return trips & currently on my 4th, Maxine will carry a full load of gear of skis/board, food, kitchen sink (thanks wifey) with no issues. What I learn is that steep grades, just throw that car into cruise and stay right at 60mph (sweet spot for mtn climbing) and enjoy the ride up, can't fight physics as my wife says. Any faster and you're throwing away gas, ime. Now the truth with the break in based on my opinion and observation is that it starts around 3000 and continues with improving mpgs thru 5000 and for me still continuing thru 8000. I just had a personal best run to Mammoth this weekend so its not levelled out yet. So....just enjoy your new car, don't worry about this or that ... Yes, it will carry everything up to the ceiling and still give you decent mpgs :) PS in regards to 70mph, you won't be able to EV but your mpg in full ICE should be between 35..40 instant mpg but your battery needs to be high > 75%...or just throw the car into eco-cruise and be done with it and enjoy the scenery ;)

Wow, I forgot about that, thanks. I am seeing improvements ever since 3,000 miles odo and it's not levelled out yet. However my fuelly is gonna get a low hit due to my Mammoth trip this weekend...but I did still see a nice 2.4 mpg improvement driving here...gotta :wub2: that.

Nah, its his big derrier from all his bloviating :hysterical: Jokes aside, we are all here to help but all we have from this Ron is the same post repeated in other threads...he's a spammer as far I'm concerned.

Posting from a comfy bed at Mammoth, its snowing...yaah. Now I :wub2: that to start with. Great news, at 8500 odo, Maxine is still improving in the MPG with the best run to date 40.4 MPG, best the last run by 2.4mpg. I got to Sherman grade with 43mpg and got murdered by the grade. Temp were 25f with snow flurries from Toms Place. Wifey said Max looks small on the outside but surprisingly big in the inside. She's still blown away that we carry the same load as a long wheel base Jaguar with a large box. Very utilitarian, plus Max handles great in the snow. Aside from MFT, some odd liftgate issues, this car is rock solid...gotta LUV that! Look for a full update next week when I am boarded out :) Yes we :wub2: our Maxine.

Welcome to the forum Hatchman. My old work car was a 98 Camry...and with the CMax it's like piloting a space shuttle...quick, fast, and very utilitarian - Buck Rogers, eat your heart out

http://www.chron.com/cars/article/Why-Prius-owners-drive-like-that-4270897.php Could this happen to you?
-
Ron - Yeah, had to call him on it, can't let trash like that being thrown around like its gospel when some low-info reader will come and say "oh thats why CMax sucks". If it was some other site, I could care less but we've all worked hard to figure out this car here and don't need to deal with this person who obviously has no interest to resolving HIS own issues. I am sure if he came here with less negativity, we would have all chimed in to help figure out why his low MPG like we have for many others. Man, the cars.com review is like a huge negativity magnet....pooooooh...better stay away lest I catch something there.

Thats theory but it seems to be recharging in EV+ seems less, its seems more aggressive outputting than regen. Oh I know, today I had a lil 5.6 mile run 0.00 gallons used, all EV with 72MPG and that is with 60% batt full...didn't realize how good it was until I saw the output...and when I saw it was EV+ at the end there. Flat valley surface roads. I am looking forward to heading back to North Hollywood to see the EV+ kick in again but that won't be till next week though. Got another way trip to do.

Cool tip, thanks Ron

Good info there Valk, thanks!

Mr Ronald Kramer, you've had 4 postings here with your complaints and frankly, as a happy poster here, can't see how we can help you when you do NOT participate in any discussions or add details to your issues. Frankly, imo, your posts are nothing more than spam ranting. If you are for real, please take it back to your Ford service department and have them do a diagnostics on it. As a long time poster here, I don't see any real, owner drivers here having that bad of a MPG even on the coldest of days. I think you would far more happier and productive if you actually took the time you spent here to your Ford service to work with them to address your issues. Otherwise, sell the car, not every car is a good fit and the 2013 Prius is probably more to your liking. Good luck with it and please cut your continuous cross posting blah blah blah. And YES my Mxine is a 47/47/47 MPG car and I have the evidence to back up my words. Cheers :)

I wonder if part of the EV+ equation is the time the vehicle spends there? Reason being is that I've been going to this location since Day 1 for an hour or 2 and its taken nearly 4 months to register this location as the EV+....

Well..I am guaranteed of 1 more post in my Twins thread then - right Adair?!?! :) Now, if yours is Jelly Bean...does that make Jerry's Jello Bob?

^ another victim of the MPG bug aka igottadrivetomaxmymileage-ea-icome strain. Extremely toxic and infectious to CMax owners, no known resistant and 100% guaranteed infection, with symptons including happy smiley faces while driving a CMax. :)

Nick, thats the Lumar tint that GAS installed in my CMax. Its sweet :)

So today I headed down to North Hollywood after a stop at Galpin to talk to their service manager about my MFT, panel and liftgate issues. Nothing exciting to report there except that they'll get back to me about the MFT update. Clearly I knew about the MFT updates more than they did, not surprising - thanks to the information from all the posters here. Anyway, as I neared my destination in North Hollywood, I noticed that my EV+ was on...I had to do a double take. I was about 3/4 mile out from my destination and ever since I have had this car, this destination was always my 2nd most frequent stop (aside from home where you naturally expect the EV+to come on). It's off Victory if anyone cares. So - does this mean that the CMax is capable of "remembering" multiple EV+ locations? I have never seen this, and I am not sure if anyone else has reported this. I've not reset my lifetime gauge in yonkers either. I mean it doesn't do me any good here with EV+ or not but its cool to know the car has learnt and scary to know that IT CAN LEARN!!!! Anyone else seen this multiple EV+?

I think trying to get first time hybrid drivers to understand that you don't need to keep their foot to the pedal all the time - it's OK to "coast", its ok to brake early and slow.

I think its variable due to 2 factors: the cold and the engine break in. Those posters in the north are not getting the same MPGs due to the cold. I don't live in the cold since I'm in SoCal but I have driven the CMax in zero and below when I am in snowy Mammoth and ICE takes forever to warm up, EV juice is bad even at high levels..lets face it, batteries hate the cold...no wonder the mileage is not good. Yes, add grill covers would help in that case. However, in the SoCal conditions where the temps are typically 50 and upward, the MPGs are alot better. I have more odo on my car so I am seeing better MPGs. I just did a post this evening where I did the same run when my engine was at 930 miles and the same run at 8000 miles and there is a savings in the fuel consumption and yet the same EV miles on both trips. Diff in temp was about 10F but it is 55F and above so I do not consider it a major factor. OP - have a good chat with some posters here on your neck of the woods to get the true MPGs. Better still, go to AVIS and see if you can rent a CMax for a week and really checkout the car as it operates in your area. Hopefully, the engines are broken in (> 5000) so it may give you a sense of the MPGs you may get. Also, what you can't quantify in these forums are each of our driving techniques - I may drive to optimize FE as I know the roads and even road selection and the more I drive these same roads, the better I get as now, I can have a game plan on how to regen/dispense my batts - thats the secret with this car.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations - you have lots and lots of useful postings and threads here. And if you have any Qs, feel free to ask away. Its funny you mention FIT, I was driving to the gym and I saw a lil Mazda 2 and wondered, how on earth can people drive those lil things and here I am in a much bigger vehicle and getting better mileage than that guy in the smaller car...gotta :wub2: that. Checkout the Fuel Mileage section and get some great tips there.

Who says it can't be done-Post Highs here-over 25 miles traveled

Nice Ron! Glad to see Ford pushing this great car. Thanks for the tip, I'll have to check it out. -
Its her MFT...I knew it would drive someone over the cliff!!!!!! :runaway: Noooooooooooooo..................
