Why are C-Max reliability ratings low? MyFord or more fundamental?
Kelleytoons replied to gnc's topic in Lounge: C-MAX Hybrid
You just say "Navigation - Destination - Street Address" (actually you can even say "Address" but it's more reliable to say the whole thing). It already knows your state so it will simply ask you to say the address, including the city. So you say something like "1234 Appleton Way, Venice" and it will find it and then you say "Set as Destination" (your other choices are to set as waypoint -- you can also just touch the "Dest" button on the screen at that point and that's what I usually do if I'm in a hurry). If there are multiple addresses that match (sometimes there is an east and west on that same street, for example, and you might not have specified it when you said the address) it will display the ones that match and you can just say "Line 1" (or whatever line it is). I rarely have to do it. My wife (who has less clear diction -- or doesn't speak as strongly as I've been trained to do as a formal speaker) often gets this because it doesn't *quite* understand her (so sometimes there are several street numbers it will list if it's confused). It's very quick -- I can set the address in the time it would take me to simply enter the street number in our Garmin. Perhaps the very latest (our Garmin is about a year old) Garmin's also have voice commands, but to me this just blows Garmin out of the water. It's also better, in my experience, than even using Google Maps or Siri (although Siri does allow you to be a lot less specific -- you can just say "Find the nearest Olive Garden". While it *might* be possible to do something like this with Nav, I haven't had a lot of luck with getting to destinations I don't know the address for).- 48 replies

Yeah, and just to be fair (and I own both PC and Apple products) if our C-Max was built by Apple it would cost $200K (but would be worth it because the finish would be, like, really white and clean), have a gas port that didn't fit any gas station out there except for the ones run by Apple, and be obsoleted every year with a much better car (and I mean MUCH better) that actually did the things right it tried to do the first time around. Good thing computer makers don't make cars... yet.

Cracked Windshield - Bluetooth or non Bluetooth replacement
Kelleytoons replied to Chodatus's topic in General Discussion
Right, but the point is there is no "normal" windshield. There is the C-Max windshield and there is... whatever that glass company is trying to sell him in place of it. IOW, I don't think any of us have the non-laminate windshield (and as someone else here put it, it's unlikely to fit any other car other than ours, so no substitutes). -
Yeah, that's the great thing about having choices -- there's something for everyone! I'm not sure I'll live long enough to ever have a total electric car, but then again I never thought I'd own a hybrid either, so you never know (the one thing I'm sure of is I won't live long enough to have a self-driving car. Heck, my computer reboots itself often enough that I can't even imagine how that would work on the highway <g>).

Kelleytoons replied to gnc's topic in Lounge: C-MAX Hybrid
I thought this as well, but I do like the NAV *much* better than my $200 Garmin (which now lives in our Durango). For one thing, there is the aforementioned voice commands -- I can easily say where I want to go and it *never* makes a mistake (every now and then I misspeak and have to start again, but by and large it's SO much faster than the Garmin it's a true joy). But it's just so much nicer to have it built in as well. About the only thing I miss is the ability to use custom voices on the Garmin (and actually the Garmin is much worse in this regard than the other major GPS maker). I used to have some fun celebrity voices and I miss them. But I don't miss anything else about the Garmin (and I've had at least 12 units starting with the B/W Garmin over 15 years ago so I have a bit of experience with them).- 48 replies

Really? Hate to question a Ford rep, but for MyTouch system it said there was an update and I did install it (it was something like 3.7.x). It seemed to install correctly and after I repaired my phone all was working. I haven't checked for anything new yet, though. I can check more fully (I have to put the USB back into my computer as the MFT update said to do this to let Ford "know" I got the update installed.

Still sounds like snake oil to me. So a "normal" windshield lets in more noise to the interior? I call BS -- the C-Max has a very quiet interior and in no way is it related to the windshield. I'd call a few other places -- hell, I'd talk to the dealership -- and make them give you what's installed on the C-Max originally (which makes the interior VERY quiet, for phone calls and playing music and just in general). -
Buy New 2014 SE or low mileage 2013 SEL
Kelleytoons replied to jkumpire's topic in Buying, Order and Leasing
Just to be clear, my concern isn't about our battery but about the original poster saying the vehicle he was looking at was out of warranty (or implying it -- have to check to see what was what). For buying the price he was quoting something that already had 100K plus miles on it was just asking for trouble (even with a "normal" transmission). And, yes, one of those concerns would be battery at this point. If that vehicle (a 2013) has over 100K on it the battery may well need replacing either now or very soon depending on how it was maintained. And we don't have the market right now to service C-Max batteries that may well grow up a few years from now. All I was saying is he wasn't getting a good deal and I still think that's true. I have ever expectation my own battery will last the life of my vehicle (which will be at least 10 years and perhaps even 15, as I tend to drive our stuff a very long time). -
Right, I'm not sure why you (hybridbear) find the buyer's reasoning "unfortunate" -- his needs are more space and your parents (and, I guess, yours) aren't. I never realized how little space there was back there until I saw someone posting pictures here. And after driving our C-Max now for seven months it clearly would have been A DISASTER for us to get the Energi. As it is there are times I wish we had more space back there (we took several trips where we used every single inch back there and then some. And with another couple there was absolutely no way short of a roof rack we could have done it). Even driving around by myself I often fill the back space to the very top just mailing my boxes off -- would be a real PITA to have to stuff stuff in the back seat. I'm sure the Energi is a fine vehicle for those it suits -- but just like the OP who came from an SUV those of us who have had experience with a much larger vehicle already have to downsize our expectations and going down any further just isn't possible.

Buy New 2014 SE or low mileage 2013 SEL
Kelleytoons replied to jkumpire's topic in Buying, Order and Leasing
*Except* the battery will then need replacing -- although there's no (or not enough) hard data on how long our own HV batteries will last, there's a good reason the system is only warranted for that long. Ford doesn't believe (or at least isn't willing to back it up with money, which is mostly the same thing) the battery won't need replacing, which is a *huge* cost right now. Down the road this may not be as big an issue -- the guess is the batteries will then be cheaper (as I think they are with the Prius now, although I could be mistaken) and/or recycled so that cost is offset somewhat. But RIGHT NOW if that C-Max has more than 100K miles on it it is in no way a good buy, which is all I was saying (what are our batteries going for right now? 2K? More? If so, they would need to knock that price off the car for sure). -
Buy New 2014 SE or low mileage 2013 SEL
Kelleytoons replied to jkumpire's topic in Buying, Order and Leasing
Yeah, the warranty on the HV system is 8 years or 100,000 miles (varies by state, though) and if THAT warranty is done the car is just about as well. I wouldn't buy it no matter how low the cost is. Also -- things are seldom either/or. Perhaps you are looking at two specific vehicles and thinking that's your only choice, but there are bound to be other used C-Maxes out there that may not have as great a compromise. You may want to keep looking, particularly if it's a vehicle you intend to keep for that long (I would *definitely* not get any car without MFT -- others here may hate it, but I still think it's one of the nicest things about any Ford vehicle. And it certainly seems to help with battery issues). -

And did you ever do a reset of MFT? I truly think that will fix it. -
A/C and mileage in hot climates (Florida)
Kelleytoons replied to tishpit's topic in Lounge: C-MAX Hybrid
I've never understood the fascination with sun roofs -- had one early on in my youth and it was a big PITA (but it also opened up -- just like with a house, the last thing you want is to introduce any opening in something that's designed to keep the elements from hitting your head). But even leaving it closed I NEVER pulled the shade -- of course, I also lived in a hot climate (Nevada) and I would think the same would be true in Florida. While there are a few weeks out of the year when it would be pleasant to have, say, a convertible, most of the time you just want something to shade your head or you will suffer heat stroke. But... maybe it's an age thing. At my age I can't see it, but kids DO love their convertibles and, I guess, sun roofs. Enjoy it while you can <g>.- 27 replies

Lost Sync with Phone
Kelleytoons replied to Smiling Jack's topic in Audio, MyFord, Navigation & SYNC
I don't know what a hard re-boot is either, but if you have the MFT system you can do a reset (not sure where it is on the menu but it's not hard to find). You will lose things like radio station presets and saved destinations (if you have Nav) but it's otherwise harmless. -
Yeah, the HV battery would be worrisome, although it's true its under warranty for 8 years. However, I'd be worried about actual FE if the battery is "bad" (and how much "proof" you'd have to provide -- let's say you got 10-20% worse gas mileage as a result. How in heck are you ever going to convince the dealership it's the battery and not your own driving?). Having MFT does *seem* to help with the 12V battery issues, so there's that. My gut tells me this is exactly the kind of car you ought to offer many thousands lower than what they are offering and then walk away (and I mean walk away -- I once did this at a dealership and they not only chased me down before I got off the lot, they gave me an even better deal than what *I* offered). So if it were me, I'd say $16K is my bottom line based on the lack of battery maintenance and then turn tail and not worry about it (as long as they have your number and contact info they can always get a hold of you if nothing better comes along -- and they are not likely to find another buyer soon, if ever).
-
Yeah, and you might want to add 79- to the "top end" (because any warmer and you need A/C). Now that we are consistently in the 80's my mpgs are dropping. Sigh.
-
Obviously if there is a particular turn you always make you will notice things -- but I suspect I haven't actually made a U-turn more than twice in the last 20 years <g> (can't say I always know where I'm going, but with GPS I can always find a way to get there :>). I actually think my Durango has a better turning radius but it doesn't seem like it only because the hood is so far out in front of it. I always forget how very short the hood is in front of me in Maximis and am always pleasantly surprised by how much room I have in a turn (whereas I'd have hit something in the front of the Durango). So for me now it's just the opposite of what you experiencing.
-
Just the opposite here -- during the winter our mpgs were easily in the 50's, but now that summer is here (90 degrees today) and A/C has to be used I'm lucky to get in the 40's. Oh well, at least I can swim in our pool now.
-
Yeah, I agree with the last post as well -- noticed it first when I got Maximis, now never think twice about it.

William, If you searched all the threads of this forum on battery problems (I'm not advising this, just saying that those of us who have read them over the last six or seven months might have done) the overwhelming conclusion you come to (at least IMHO) is that sometime around January of 2014 they made a major "fix" (or series of fixes) that seemed to solve *most* of the issues. It also appears the SE model has many more issues than the SEL model (again, IMHO -- part of the problem is hard data is, well, hard to come by). This also appears related to the equipment package (i.e. those of us with an SE with the MFT package have less battery problems than those without -- that early radio in particular was a killer). None of which is to say that ANY Max, 2013, 14 or 15, and SE or SEL, couldn't have battery problems. But personally I wouldn't be afraid of any car built after January 14, particularly if it had MFT, and particularly if you were armed with all of the TSBs and other fixes that have been mentioned here on the forum. The later the build, (and an SEL versus SE) the better. Will someone here report that they have a 2015 SEL with all options and still have a battery problem after all TSBs and fixes have been applied? Almost certainly, and it will almost certainly be an anomaly. Conversely, there are most likely LOTS of 2013 SEs with no battery problems at all. But for someone whose already been down that road, your best bet (short of solving the problem with your own vehicle) would be to increase your odds with a new one.
-
Yeah, I guess there's always a tradeoff. I just know there isn't any possible way I could do without that space (I fill it up to the top ALL the time -- in point of fact, that was a buying factor for us and if we had even looked at an Energi it would have been "No way, Jose!".). But it's good there are choices for everyone.
-
Oh, so maybe what I'm "missing" is the space you miss anyway when you have an Energi (if so, there's no way I could EVER get one -- I use every bit of that space back there all the time). Also, as a result, don't think there'd be any room to actually mount a sub to look very clean back in our cars. But, glad you're happy (that's the important thing).
-
As much as I love my tunz there is no way I'd give up that much cargo space in Maximis (we put two 12" subs in our Durango though, and have space left over). But glad you're happy! (Music makes life worth living).

Kelleytoons replied to gnc's topic in Lounge: C-MAX Hybrid
I actually really LIKE the NAV system -- once you get used to it I think you'll find it can be better than anything else out there. The key are the voice commands - you never take your hands off the wheel and you can navigate to any address or destination easily (again, once you get used to it). To me, in fact, that's the real selling point of the whole MFT system (change radio stations, play whatever song you want, adjust temps, etc, etc. all without looking or touching any screen). It's a better Siri than Siri (which I also happen to like a lot).- 48 replies

Ah you were SO close to me then (yesterday I was at the south end of The Villages on 27 around 9am). Never see any C-Maxes other than mine, but I have to admit I don't look all that closely. And to think we might have had breakfast <bg>.
