  1. I think I have seen that from time to time. Maybe it is some sort of meditative zen state where everything is in perfect balance - or maybe something is stuck or confused. I will watch to see if I observe this on the highway.
  2. You used to need to have your keys more readily available in case you needed to make a quick getaway. Now you just need to have them in your bag or pocket and you're ready to escape go.
  3. I just callen my ins co (Travellers) to ask about this. I was expecting to hear that such discount is not available in NC. Surprise! They said I am already getting a "hybrid discount" as noted in my policy declarations, but that the specific amount of the discount is not noted anywhere - it's just factored into the rate for my C-Max. So it's hard to tell if there is a real discount or not. I started asking about the regular Civic and the hybrid Civic, and the agent said to me that other factors besides the hybrid discount factor into the ins rate for each of these vehicles. This made sense to me because the hybrid Civic has a lot of features and parts (such as the hybrid battery, electric motor and all things related to them) that the regular Civic does not and all of these need to be factored into setting the ins rate for the hybrid Civic. Does anyone who is getting a "hybrid discount" on their C-Max ins have a specific dollar amount for the discount listed on their policy or bill?
  4. What's the oddity here?
  5. I started to use the 11 method at a location I go to almost every weekday. I got tired of this after about 4 or 5 cycles and found that was enough. Since then this location is always recognized as an EV+ location.
  6. Your car has gone backwards when the forward gear is selected? Do you mean the car rolled or it was propelled by the ICE or by the electric motor? This is not the same as, and much scarier than, the oft reported car won't go backwards when reverse gear is selected
  7. With 10% ethanol as opposed to 100% gasoline (no ethanol) there is a 3-4% decrease in energy content per gallon which is 1.4-1.9 less mpg out of the EPA rated 47mpg.
  8. Does anyone know what fuel is used in the EPA test protocol/EPA testing? Is it pure regular unleaded gas or 10% ethanol?
  9. Hmm, I now recall reading that about reverse in another thread. Can you explain what is changing or switching when the electric motor switches from "drive" mode (taking elec energy from the battery and converting it to mechanical energy that moves the car) to "regen" mode (taking mechanical energy from coasting or gentle braking and converting it to elec energy that charges the battery)?
  10. I was going to ask this elsewhere, but since you have provided such a good description of how to do a lifetime rest can you tell me all the things that are reset when you do a lifetime reset? I think mpg, EV miles, regen miles and brake score (plus MPGe and kwh in the Energi) get reset. I don't think miles driven gets reset because the master odometer is required to show the total miles for the vehicle. I have not done a lifetime reset on my car. I now have 5,100 miles on my odometer. When I got my car it had about 130 miles on the odometer. If I had done a lifetime reset on my car when I took possession from my dealer, I think my odometer would still read 5,100 miles and but my lifetime mpg, EV miles, regen miles and brake score would have been zeroed out when I did the reset and would now include only what had accrued from my driving since I took possession (i.e., the 4,970 miles from 130 when I got my car to the 5,100 on the odometer today).
  11. When you put it in place, it looks like a divider for the cup holder. Before that it's hard to tell what it is. Take a look at the thread Can't Figure it out! in general discussion Started by pkay, Feb 25 2013 06:03 PMThere are some pictures posted in this thread.
  12. I just conducted an experiment with my car on my essentially flat dead end street. Please do not try to replicate this experiment where you live by going downhill in reverse from the crest of the Blue Ridge. First I rolled forward slowly and gently applied the brakes. Even though I was only going around 3mph, the spinning regen symbol lit up when I gently applied the brakes. Next I tried the same thing in reverse and once again the spinning regen symbol lit up when I applied the brakes. I think the answer to your question about "generator" vs "load" is that when the car is being driven by the electric motor the electric motor is turning in the direction that converts electric energy from the battery into mechanical energy to move the car - the direction of electric motor spin is the same regardless of whether you are going forwards or backwards - the direction the car goes (forward or backwards) is determined by the transmission which gets its instructions from where you put the gear selector (forward or reverse). When you gently apply the brakes and reap the benefits of regenerative braking, the electric motor turns in the opposite direction which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy thereby slowing the car and charging the hybrid battery. For more explanation search on "how does regenerative braking work" - you will get more results than you will want to read. One is at http://auto.howstuffworks.com/auto-parts/brakes/brake-types/regenerative-braking1.htm or Ford's description at http://www.myfordmag.com/askford/regenerative-braking (the video doesn't say much except that it is "remarkable")
  13. Check to make sure you have the plastic piece that you can use to divide/reduce the opening size of your front cup holder. It should be in a plastic bag in the console storage compartment. This has been missing in many cars. Ask the dealer to show you where the spare tire, jack and tools are stored :) When the dealer tells you that the C-Max does not have any of these and instead has just the tire mobility kit you will avoid my experience of first learning about this fact on this forum. Make sure they are sending you home w a full gas tank. Have them show you how to sync your phone w the car.
  14. I hope your car would slow down or come to a stop. I think mine would. If you are going backwards at very low speed perhaps you may not see the spinning regenerative brake symbol when you gently apply the brakes because you are going too slow. I think I have noticed this if I am creeping forward.
  15. Does the C-Max have a back up starter motor that gets turned by the 12v battery and can start the ICE if the lithium battery is too depleted to get things started? We had this on our 2000 Honda Insight, but it never kicked in over 12+ years and 150,000+ miles. The back-up starter motor was reported to be just big enough to get the ICE going (much smaller than a typical starter motor) and very noisy.
  16. Nope. I apparently mistype my user name or password a lot, but after a few tries I have always been able to sign in.
  17. Help us compare energy data for the ENERGI. [separate request already posted for the non-plug-in SE and non-plug-in SEL.] We have collected some data already in a thread titled "EV Mode driving - Post your numbers" started about a week ago by wamba2000. So far we only have data on 2 ENERGI. We can do better than that. Here are the questions: 1. Model - ENERGI 2. Lifetime Total Miles Driven - 3. Lifetime EV miles driven - 4. Lifetime Regen miles - 5. Lifetime MPG - 6. Lifetime MPGe - 7. Lifetime kwh - 8. Lifetime brake score 9. Are your figures full lifetime [NO RESETS] or have you done a RESET (if so, explain when and what was reset) When we have some more data we will share any trends we saw - for example relationship between fuel economy and % EV miles, range of brake scores, comparison of REGEN miles to total EV miles, etc. Thanks for your help.
  18. Help us compare fuel economy and % EV miles for non-plug-in SE and non-plug-in SEL. [separate request to follow for ENERGIs] We have collected some data already in a thread titled "EV Mode driving - Post your numbers" started about a week ago by wamba2000. So far we only have data on 5 vehicles. We can do better than that. Here are the questions: 1. Model - SE or SEL 2. Lifetime Total Miles Driven - 3. Lifetime EV miles driven - 4. Lifetime Regen miles - 5. Lifetime mpg - 6. Lifetime brake score - 7.
  19. I'm not sure what the cruise tells you except that you are going "too fast". I have noticed that it downgrades me if I drive 70mph on a 70mph highway.
  20. chuckles - Thanks for posting your data. Are you driving an SE or SEL? How many regen miles do you have? We drove our C-Max to Carthage and Southern Pines in February. Are you saying that your actual miles are less than what your odometer shows? I thought posters on other threads were saying that the odometer was reading low compared to what their GPS was showing.
  21. asb - Thanks for posting your data. You are the first SE to report.
  22. valkraider - Thanks for the data update. Is 68.2 your MPG or mpgE? Whichever it is, could you provide your other figure and your kwh? [sorry to keep asking for more stuff, I'm still learning (with help from you and Rob) what to ask about the ENERGI.] The info in your reply to my personal message was very helpful. I really thought the ENERGI had two separate hybrid batteries because that's what I was told at the dealership. You explained in your reply to my PM: "The Energi only has one battery, all the stats come from the one single battery. The system merely creates a "virtual partition" (my description - not Fords) which just changes vehicle behavior based on settings and whatnot." And in regard to why the ENERGI might rack up a lot more REGEN miles than the HYBRID: "The Energi has the same regen as the hybrid. Just with the bigger battery we have more potential storage. I have a lot of regen because we live in the mountains, I have a lot of downhills. :) Look at my thread about what you can do with a mountain and a battery." I did look at your "what you can do" post when it went up. I will look at it again. One thing I have been wondering about w REGEN and REGEN MILES is that I know this is going up when I lightly apply the brakes and see the spinning regen symbol above the battery level icon, but does this also go up when I am coasting down a hill? I know energy is going into my battery when I am coasting, but the spinning regen symbol does not appear. I need to drive to Asheville NC and see what happens when I come back down the big hill (cross the Eastern continental divide) on I-40 on the way home.
  23. wamba2000 - Good morning. We only have data on a few vehicles so far, but one thing I have noticed based on comparing two ENERGIs and two HYBRIDS is that the ENERGI appears to get more REGEN miles and a higher percentage of REGEN miles compared to EV miles and REGEN miles compared to total miles. I don't understand this - that's why I asked Rob some more questions on this thread and valkraider some more questions in a private message. As a last resort I may read some of the ENERGI specific info in the owner's manual.
