Am up early... Good news they found what appears to have been the issue! Hope it stays like this :) Incase it is water intrusion, I'd watch car washing and driving in rain and see what happens afterwards. Hopefully it's not that, but it's something to be wary of. You never know. As for learning the car - here's where I started out - loads of great info you won't find in the manual. In fact, the whole forum has loads of info including the 600+ and 700+ mpg threads if you're looking to make the most mpg wise :) http://fordcmaxhybridforum.com/topic/1751-jus-another-cmax-review/?fromsearch=1

If you got a really good deal on the SEL, I think you'll be happy in the long run. It's obviously a pain now, but I think they'll get it right for you and if it takes a while, you'll have a rental while they do fix it. Since it was Volvo dealership that sold it, they likely just thought it was a bad battery from being sat or something, tested it and thought it was okay. If it had been a Ford dealership that sold it, that would have been worse I think as they would have been aware of the reported 12v issues on the C-Max and other cars. The Volvo dealer was likely just clueless rather than deceptive. If you're under 36k miles though, I think you're still covered by the CA lemon law no matter what happens. Am sure Ford will sort it out. My last car was a Jeep from a Toyota dealer - got it really cheap with something like 8k on it, but they missed recalls and as a result it had all sorts of issues in the first few weeks. I felt like I was in the same place you are now, except it would take more than a jump starter to get me moving. A regular Jeep/Chrysler dealer sorted it all out, and looking back, I made out like a bandit on that deal :) As I said - I know it's a PIA now, but they'll get it right I'm sure. Thanks for keeping us updated and let us know how it goes tomorrow.

Euro headlights - pointless mod, but whatever :)

I used to hate that thing, especially the noise in the morning, but she no longer drives it - has sat there all summer to the point the tires are pretty much rotting away and instead drives her other Toyota. There are only two things that have ever set off my perimeter alarm - lightning that hit a tree over the road once, and that Hummer's engine.. -

Cheers! Video #4 on this page here will help: http://www.carcarekiosk.com/video/2013_Ford_C-Max_Hybrid_SEL_2.0L_4_Cyl./lights/headlight When putting it back in, you just have to make sure the lower retaining bracket is in. Is difficult to describe, and IMO it's the hardest part of the process, but you'll see what I mean. Even if your bulbs are okay, taking one out just so you get used to how it works I think will help. I hadn't taken mine out until I got the euro ones. I had moved them forward enough to change the low beam H11 bulbs before, but the high beam and turn signals, you'll need to take the whole lot out. The harness btw has no slack at all. Getting that off as you'll see in the video can be a pain. Also, when the headlight is out enough, and when putting it back in, throw a thin towel between it and the body so it doesn't get scratched up. -
I always find it funny my loaners all end up something other than a Ford. Except the first loaner - an F250 or something.. Huge.. Since the dealer said the battery tested ok and connectors to the water coolant pump were okay, they maybe did something on the programming that messed it up. Am sure they'll get it fixed up for you. There are multiple reports on here that seem to point to water in connectors, which is what's going on with mine I think as it always seems to happen after rain, but it's random and doesn't always happen to everyone, and seems related mostly to the SE, but it could be anything. If it might be water intrusion, I find handwashing helps, and avoiding big puddles on the passenger side since that's the side the pump is on, infront of the engine. You shouldn't have to rely on the jump starter on a car you just bought, but it won't leave you stranded. Just don't leave it in the trunk like I did :) Keep us posted how you get on.

Nah, you didn't - there's a bunch of us here in the same boat (or rather, car) so it's not just you. One good thing is, getting to use all these hire cars shows us how good the C-Max is :) Btw I think there's a number of members here in the Bay area same as yourself. I'm in the bay area, but it's Tampa Bay sadly.

Happy they sorted out the rental for you and they get you back on the road again. I do have some faith in them fixing this eventually. I'm of the opinion that I've spent so much time learning the car to get a good constant 50+ mpg (ignore the fuelly, I haven't updated it), and so much money on making it mine (backup camera, Lockpick, gaspods, tint, led's all over the place, DRL's) that I'll just have to wait until Ford get their act together on this and I'll deal with jumping it when I need to. Even taking it to the dealer when it is dead which is about 5 times in 1.5 years - I should take it in and have twice, but I'd rather not deal with some poor rental for days on end, and get the car back dirtier than it went in, and my average mpg down knowing it won't be fixed anyway. Had all the TSB's and recalls but still does it. It's been in twice for this but I've just given up. I could go in again, and technically lemon law it after that try, but again, I see this as Ford's problem and not mine. I'd only end up with something worse and likely regret it. The car is great - probably the best I've owned after my '78 Mini.. - but after all this, when it's done in a few years, I probably won't touch Ford again. Also, the argument that this was a new car for Ford - the hybrid is - but this exact car has been on the European market since August 2010 and per Ford UK, they've had no reports of water intrusion in engine bay connectors on theirs, and besides the engine and hybrid components, it's the same car. The problem I see with this is lack of experience in Detroit when they threw these together (and had multiple models on the same line likely causing confusion). Given the recalls for seat back welding, restraints, and the one in the headliner, I don't expect them to have got the wiring exactly right. Maybe that check from Ford was to buy ourselves new a water pump and harness and have someone competent install it, and make everything weatherproof under there ;)

Might want to check out 1-d on this page: http://oag.ca.gov/consumers/general/lemon Their definition of a new car might help you out. Did the dealer offer the rental or is this out of your own pocket? IMO, a dead car after they did the reprogram should mean the onus is on them to provide transport, regardless of what it went in for originally. Also, did Ford corporate tell you if there had been the same issue with the car before you bought it, and has the Ford rep on here got back to you? Might also want to check out www.etis.ford.com and enter your VIN under "vehicles" I think it is and see if there are any outstanding items over on the left side of the page. Those wouldn't have been done, and taking your car in for them means you also get a rental. Am assuming the Ford dealer it's at checked for any outstanding TSB's but you never know. Good luck, and sorry you've had such a bad time with the car. It's definitely a great car - when it works.

Ha! Originally from Macclesfield here - moved over 12 years ago. You might want to give Fox rent a car a go. I think I got lucky at Avis at Gatwick that day. Was over again the other week as that first trip in July was cut short by BA losing my bag and other random mishaps.. and got some VW Polo with manual mirrors the second time... Seriously thought those were a thing of the past. Bluetooth stereo and backup camera, and manual wing mirrors! Fox seem to have more Fords so when I'm over again at Xmas I'm going to try them instead. Want to swap Vancouver for Tampa? ;)

I got this one off Amazon. Fits in the glovebox and works pretty well. Used it I think 3 times without charging inbetween. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00D42AFS8/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=wms_ohs_product

I recall it was just under 60mpg in UK mpg in the 1.0l ecoboost for the entire trip - London to mid Wales to Manchester and back to London, so about 49 in US mpg. I was trying to break 60, but doing 80mph down the M40 back to the airport didn't help my cause. I'm there again at Xmas so I'll take the GasPods with me next time :)

Sorry to hear that. I would say if it's a Ford dealer you bought it from, it's still under warranty <36,000 miles, and given these concerns are something Ford has open tickets for, then they should honor a rental at the very least. Actually, I'm not sure it being under 36k is a requirement since these are TSB's etc. were talking about. Best advice is to give Ford corporate a call. Chances are if your car had this happen so soon, then it's been in elsewhere (or the same dealer..) for the same issue, and Ford would know.

Yup, these are I think German LHD lights. The company I ordered from is just in the UK, they imported them and sent them on. The, um, DRL's are a bit bright.. Just went to go see what they look like at night when unlocking the car, and the neighbors dog started barking.. http://fordcmaxhybridforum.com/uploads/gallery/album_106/gallery_504_106_403471.jpg -

Cheers! Unfortunately there's no way to adjust these I'm afraid, not manually at least. There are a few versions out there - this base one I have, then another with a motor to adjust up/down with a control on the light switch, then another which automatically raises and dips high beams based on sensing oncoming cars, or rear lights on cars infront. The tech and options I think are far more advanced, but then the roads are narrow and dark there, and they do tend to tow more than we do in regular cars (especially caravans that tend to blow over - along with the cars - in high winds on the way down the M5 to Cornwall in England).. The number of hours I used to spend in traffic on that road in the summer growing up there still has an effect on me.. Light distribution is definitely better - I had the old one vs new in last night and the cutoff was far clearer and side distribution better IMO. Glare regulations are far stricter there I believe too. -
So the bonus check from Ford was burning a hole in my pocket, and I had a crack in one lens thanks to a Target shopping cart, so instead of replacing it with the same thing, I went ahead and bought left hand drive European headlights from their C-Max. If anyone's crazy and fancies a go at this, it's pretty straightforward. Buy them, wait a week, haul the huge box back from the post office, plug them in, drive. Cost was around $360 via Ford Parts in the UK, mostly due to the poor exchange rate at the moment, and shipping. Compared to a single new US one, it wasn't that bad. The connector is the same, and the pins are - 8 turn signal, 12 park/sidelight/marker, 5 high, 10 low, and 7 ground. It's the same pins on both sides and matches ours. It came with bulbs, and the main difference is the low beam is H7 vs our H11. A sidelight is in with the high beam. If you want to see where it is, and how to change it - it's right there in our third edition manual - it's just not on our car... Our marker is up next to the turn signal bulb. Guess that'll be in the fourth edition :) With it not being orange in the corners, it looks cleaner and I threw in some canbus LED's for the sidelights as a nice manual DRL thanks to some posts I found on the UK C-Max forum. Since these sidelights are viewable from the side, if there's ever a concern over there being no amber sidemarkers for US spec, I guess I'll just swap them out with amber bulbs. http://fordcmaxhybridforum.com/uploads/gallery/album_106/gallery_504_106_267205.jpg http://fordcmaxhybridforum.com/uploads/gallery/album_106/gallery_504_106_2622395.jpg http://fordcmaxhybridforum.com/uploads/gallery/album_106/gallery_504_106_3489248.jpg http://fordcmaxhybridforum.com/uploads/gallery/album_106/gallery_504_106_1623080.jpg

Has anyone here who had the 12v issue had their water pump replaced? Just wondering as I know that's one of the suggested causes but it's been anecdotal so far. My connectors looked awful when I looked with my untrained eye, but got nowhere with dealers when it came to replacement. Trying to avoid rain and puddles, and carrying round a jump starter is getting a little tiresome now. I was over in the UK again last week, and their C-Maxes have their water/coolant pump rotated differently to ours. The service manager there showed me a 2012 up on the ramp with the cover off and he's never seen a corrosion issue with them and also checked their ETIS system and nothing. The pump looked the same and was in a similar location. And it obviously rains more there too..

Hello, A - the other OBD port is below the steering wheel. Have my scangauge plugged in there. Only thing to watch with that one is any wiring and it's proximity to the knee airbags. B - which power ports are you referring to? If it's the cig lighter ones in the dash and inside the center console, those are accessory, so only hot when the key's on accessory or drive. The one in the trunk though is always hot. The accessory ones do stay on for a few mins afterwards, but they do switch off eventually.
