  1. You need to consider that in a hybrid, ALL energy comes from gasoline; even the electricity in the battery. Even if it comes from regeneration while coasting down a hill, you had to burn gas to get to the top of it. No free lunch, etc. Gliding is basically reducing the most amount of drag that you can. Coasting involves drivetrain drag. In a conventional car, that comes from the engine/transmission still being driven by the wheels while in a hybrid it comes from regeneration. Either quickly slows the vehicle down relatively speaking. Gliding removes those losses and you will travel much further from a Pulse than simply coasting. This is not a method to maintain a constant speed. You pulse up and glide slowly back down; rinse, lather, repeat. Do it enough and you can actually develope muscle memory and do it subconsciously. :headspin: To be in a CMax glide, both the up and down chevrons that are around the battery indicator need to be off. It's not easy to modulate and, like I said, I err slightly on the EV side just as ScubaDad described. 50's and 60's are easily obtained but here is one of my best over a decent distance (warm weather, warm ICE): Jus-a-CMax has even reported trips in the 80's. :drop:
  2. From the link: Pulse and glide works like this: let's say you're on a road where you want to go 60 km/h. Instead of driving along at a steady 60, you instead accelerate to 70 (that's the pulse), and then coast in neutral with the engine off down to 50 (that's the glide). That link is 8 years old for traditional ICE vehicles. The technique and definition (for hybrids) have evolved. The 3rd gen Prius came with a power meter and an ECON button to allow the driver to easily P&G without illegally or unsafely operate in a neutral gear. Just apply enough accelerator pedal to cancel out regen and get the power flow (in and out) to zero. It's harder to manipulate in the CMax so I prefer to err slightly on the positive side and get slightest hint of a blue bar showing on the meter(s).
  3. I actually pulse above the speed limit by 5mph or so and glide back down to about 5 below and not focus on distances so fairly time efficient plus I'm not a rolling roadblock. :shift: LOL I don't try to P&G at highway speeds because I, too, think aero drag would be too great. Best to use aero mods.
  4. Yup, you've got a good grasp of how it works. P&G masters roughly strive for a 1/3rd pulse to a 2/3rd's glide distance ratio. In my experience, I also found adding a touch more throttle to blend in a slight amount of EV really helped glides without aggressively draining the battery. It's a fine line. The prius has an economy mode/button that deadens the throttle input making modulation much easier to find and hold the glide position. One would park the throttle on their bar graph display right at 50% for a glide. ( <50% was regen, >50% was power)
  5. In hypermiling terminology, this is what is called a glide; as in Pulse and Glide. Coasting is not a glide. Hybrids allow the driver to legally coast in neutral without actually shifting into neutral gear by this gliding process and the gains are huge in fuel economy. Prius gauges are better at showing this.
  6. This is a question you should ask your dealership. Worse comes to worse, SD cards can be found on ebay. No free downloads that I know of.
  7. Our local VW dealership advertises a "free" lifetime/unlimited miles warranty. The tiny print disclaimer to see dealer for details so I did and the owner must have all service done at his dealership. What a deal! LOL
  8. My goal is to get from point A to B in the most efficient manner in regards to both energy and time. I can do my daily commute via two routes; one is more energy efficient and the other more time. I choose the time route and try to manage it with the least amount of energy I can. When I got my 894 mile tank, I chose the more efficient route but it cost me a whole lot of time (approx. 30 minutes per day).
  9. Lifted from other forums for some perspective. "I've given Toyota the benefit of the doubt and now I'm preparing to take legal action against Toyota for their lack of support or acknowledgment of many issues with the Entune System. I am running Eutune 3.2 which I believe is the latest version." From a Honda site: "-Touchscreen: Not for me... I like large hardware buttons. To make matters worse, the interface is slow to respond, looks kinda dated, color is blue which may not match rest of gauges, and overall is not pleasant to use at all. I really don't like it, period. Navi was definitely old looking, would much rather continue to use my iPhone with WAZE or similar routing app." Cadillac: "Looks like it's yet another promise broken by GM/Cadillac. I suspected this verbiage would eventually be taken off the Cadillac website because after speaking to various people in Cadillac's ranks, no one seemed interested in fixing C.U.E. bugs, adding 2015 features to 2014 models, or even attempting to resolve poor interface issues. So if you're considering an ELR, just be aware that if you have any concerns with the C.U.E. system, they're not going to be fixed, so let that information guide you appropriately. This is for sure the last GM car I guy."
  10. As with nearly everything in life, there are exceptions to the rule. My 2010 prius had "real" leather. It was an (overpriced) port installed option by the regional distributor (gulf states toyota). That was my first car with leather. Living here in the deep south, I was worried after reading so many opinions on how hot they get but I found that to be much to do about nothing. In fact, every car we've purchased since then has had leather. I greatly prefer it over cloth and won't go back.
  11. I highly recommend the SEL. Your simple tastes will, umm, evolve. :wub2: Better bang for the buck and much less issues with the dead battery syndrome. Test drive a prius v, I dare ya'! (see my signature below) :shift:
  12. The sensitivity selector has five positions rotating from the top to the bottom. You want the white maker on this rotator pointed up at the top to have the most sensitivity (clockwise when viewed from the side). If yours are so, then there's something wrong. I was at a car wash today, over two cars back from the opening, with the wipers in the most sensitive position and the mist in the air activated them. Before purchase, this was a feature I quickly glossed over in the brochure with barely a notice but after nearly two years of ownership of an SEL, I have found them to be awesome. We are in the mist of a very wet winter more typical of the pacific northwest and they have "paid" for themselves over and over again. This is a feature typically only found on luxury level automobiles priced thousands and thousands more.
  13. It's your last sentence that's the most significant for me (and I suspect most others). I split the difference and use moderate braking from high highway speeds and coasting for lower speeds. Coasting down from highway speeds with highly inflated tires isn't practical in most of my traffic situations as it takes too long (which is a GOOD thing from an efficiency standpoint). The difference between the two at city speeds is usually only a tenth or two of a percent on the SGII; so a wash. So, I've found that banking the most regen I can in a short time frame (and thus not holding up traffic) is the best compromise in my Energi. NOTE: It can bank more regen than the hybrid.
  14. A couple of housekeeping items: There isn't an SL in the CMax line; just SE and SEL. Since you have SL listed as your current vehicle, I thought I should point this out. Second, the LV acronym isn't commonly used in hybrid forums for the 12v battery like HV is used for the high voltage battery. Best to stick with 12v for better understanding. Thoughts on the 12v battery: Did you buy the SEL new? The most commons reasons for leakage is overcharging or a leaking case. Sounds like you've pretty much ruled out the latter. Welcome to the dual owners club! :happy feet: There are a few of us around.
  15. Could you have the sensitivity setting on the lowest instead of the highest setting? On the most sensitive setting, mine can occasionally be tripped to activate one swipe by the a/c drip of the car just in front of me during the humid summer!
  16. You'll need to search around under the SE seat and floor to see if the other end of the electrical connector is there. I would think the sub-harness will be there.
  17. Yeah, the software/phone analogy doesn't really work for the OP's demands as his would require new hardware (paid or free). Apple may update the OS but they ain't gonna' retrofit a larger screen or a fingerprint button. ;) Currently Tesla is about the only company coming close to meeting the OP's requirements but those cars come at a great cost. To use another analogy about airlines, he wants first class service and perks but at economy class prices.
  18. I realize this is the hybrid forum so I'll skip the details but we Energi owners have found a method to bank excess regen energy back into the battery and save it. In the same scenario in hybrid mode, the cars' programming would seek to immediately burn off that excess to keep the battery SOC within set parameters. On a short 45 mile hwy trip that I regularly take, I can bank almost 5 EV miles using this method. At highway speeds, I've found (via scangauge) that it's best to use the brakes moderately hard for max regen (max brake scores) and not coast. Too much kinetic energy is lost to wind resistance and tire friction while coasting that could be going into the battery.
  19. Better Place filed for bankruptcy in Israel in May 2013. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Better_Place
  20. Idiot: everyone driving faster than you. Moron: everyone driving slower than you.
  21. A mind is a terrible thing. And it must be stopped in our lifetime. Please give to unicorn. (old but great comic bit) :) Thanks Dave!
  22. Oh, I totally agree that a higher roofline is much more comfortable. I've stated as much here on the forum whenever I've been asked to compare the two cars since I've owned both. You want to talk about a crazy comfortable car that's super easy to get in/out of? That's the Nissan Cube. Back in '09, we walked in to look at a Rogue and bought the local dealerships' first Cube SL. LOL Talk about a high roof line! That's the only ICE car we've ever owned that got lower highway mileage than city. The tall boxy design really fights the wind and the flat windshield is a real rock catcher too. If it weren't for those attributes, we'd probably still have it. We both loved that goofy car.
  23. Just so happens, I pulled up the temp gauge yesterday and didn't notice any change but I could have sworn it did previously. Must me losing my mind (not the first time). I deleted my reference just in case.
