  1. A doubter! Have not been on this board long enough... The CMax is more than capable of 50+ MPG. I have had many trips where I droved 585 miles return trip from 700ft to 7800 ft, temps from 55F to 28F that runs from Los Angeles to Mammoth Mountain and back, full loaded: 45 to 47MPGs. In the city, I average 63MPGs daily. In the right hands and knowing what the CMax can and cannot do, you will get the MPGs out of it. 2 other long time posters here: SDM and Snowstorm has done even longer trips with MPGs > 47 :) So, unless you drive and work for Consumer Reports in the CMax testing, it ain't hard to get better than the lowly rated MPG of 40. Of course, CR can only get 38MPG while running on a PIDDLY, closed circuit - thats a tough, tough, tough driving MPG test. My hat is off to those skilled drivers... :baby: Unfortunately, most new CMax drivers do drive like their old gas cars until they understand and use this new HYBRID driving skill. Frankly, that's because Ford made the car more like a "gas" car in responsiveness and handling and a complete contrast to the way Toyota did to their 10+ yr Prii line (you would think that they too would have learnt something after so many years OWNING the KING of the hybrid cars). As my fellow forum mate here, Nick, likes to say, the Prii is a :airquote: driving by consensus...hands up all those who want to accelerate in a Prii...or how about making that turn...hands up now.... :airquote: Not out CMax, nice MPGs when you use it properly but still allow you to HOON
  2. Sssh, c'mon now...don't tell everyone, it suppose to be as secret among friends here... ;) ...actually, I prefer to glide and enjoy the quietness with a nice Hawaiian ukulele guitar going through the Sony sound system :love_shower:
  3. I will agree with Paul, those grill covers will GENERALLY help in the freezing cold but jus one thing, don't go climbing LONG grades (3 miles+ 45* grades at 65mph). Even if the ambient the temp is a lowly 29F or cooler, it will cause the overheat engine warning to come on. I've done it, so jus be cautious and judicous with its use (I use the main grill cover only and it seems to be a nice balance eventhough it does not get freezing cold here).
  4. :congrats: those are big numbers, and you know what, it only gets better and better  Welcome to the "I drive a C-Max Lemon" Club ;)
  5. I presume U GIVE UP...tap..tap...tap? Edit your post and change to BBCode Mode ;) I like the 600+ , you and others PROVE this is a very capable MPG car in the right hand. As I will say and say and say again, we're all BETTER hybrid drivers than the :airquote: professional drivers that Consumer Reports hired to drive their CMax that they bought. IMO, you guys really show up HOW bad driving skills really are without saying a word but lil ole me will point that out. Again. And again....and all in a great ride as well that is superior to the Japanese counterparts. Nick, trust, me if you lived in my area, I could easily train you to blow 80+ MPGs with the right route and EV management. Theres nothing special and there are enough hints and tips here on this forum for everyone to break 600, 700 or 800 or 900  Hmmh, latter is a toughie unless you set a loop but I don't do loop driving. I am satisfied with the low to mid 800s,I know :baby:
  6. lol, DD....or you are the wrong guy for that time of the month ;) & :lol2: My wifey is like that...hoon machine and she use to race SCCA (or something). Thats OK, she'll learn that at 22 gallons @ $4.20 per gallon & piddly miles is a nice hit to our her purse. Me, I jus roll along with another 840 mile tank, what do I know :baby:
  7. Great ride and MPGs to go with it. Congratulations, now you have you hooked and addicted where you'll swear off the Prii for life (or at least until they release their 60MPG beast then you and I will be buying that. Hope NIck doesn't see this part of the post) ^there is something hidden there and I know Nick will never find it :noobie:
  8. Closing thread. Please carry any updates/discussions in the battery threads. Thanks everyone.
  9. :sos: If Adair doesn't show up on Monday :waiting: , I'll update the Post #1. In the meantime, I pleasantly request aka :redcard: DEMAND :dj: ....that if you quite pleasantly BOMBARD her friggin PM box to get her butt back here.... ;)
  10. Nah, leave this thread - some great inputs and let folks call it as they see it. I already made it clear the OP is a One Post Wonder. Like someone who farts in a room and then proceeds to leave and everyone goes, "yeah, it does smell here...but I have air freshner". You can't stop posters from doing this...so if everyone wants this thread to die, then :rtfm: stop posting. Now, thats jus my 2c and I enjoy DRIVING my -currently - 63MPG lemon at 358 miles on the odo for this tank. A true, true lemon for sure :stirpot: oh, that true work & play driving. No loops, special back-seat-removal-make-the-car-light or hold up traffic driving either (this is LA, they will KILL you). On that note...its time to.... :flyaway: outta this thread.
  11. I would not rely on miles to empty on a full tank, so don't fret. However we suspect the computer uses the histogram to calculate this value. See my Nutz thread to see how these numbers changed as I climbed Pacific Palisades and then down and over Topanga going from practically zero to 30 and up and down as I drove. ..which leads me to conclude it uses the histogram mpg. Gee that was a long time ago, it feels....
  12. Yeah, I did that for my Jaguar window. Let them assess it, some are fixable, some are not - depends on the crack. Mine cost $50 for private party. Look in yelp.com for a good business. I can't remember who did mine but it was one of those large auto window repair franchises - great customer service as well. I went back there for some really minor nicks for Maxine when she was young, and the guy flat out told me I didn't need it. And get it done asap, you don't want all the shock and bumps from driving to open the crack more...if I were u ;)
  13. There goes another 0.05 MPG off for Brother Mike, loading all this stuff into his car...mate, just take out the back seat (to compensate for the MPG loss) and then you can add all the dash covers etc that you want ;) :flyaway:
  14. http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1093276_epa-wants-carmakers-to-verify-gas-mileage-with-road-testing-too Now, does this mean they have to verify in the cold north and the hot south? C'mon to be fair... ;)
  15. Don't worry, I drive my her Jaguar and she has to remind me that I need to go faster. Ok, true. But then I love to show her my  800+ miles a tank gas receipt compared to her piddly 320 mile receipt on my her Jaguar 22 gallon tank. FTW :yahoo: :love_shower: the CMax ;)
  16. ^ that is a masterpiece of a photo, easily be a backdrop for my PC. Great photo!
  17. Depends on where you driving. Trying to build a high SOC in city is a waste of gas as there are other :airquote: natural factors that will contribute to the SOC build such as traffic lights, braking for traffic etc. Your "EV bang of the buck" is much higher in city where the low speed 30mph-40mph means you can use less EV to keep the car in motion longer at those speed (versus trying to have EV keep the CMax in motion at 67mph). On freeway, keeping & building a high SOC makes better sense as this is where the computer would be used in the eco-cruise and will kick in some EV to propel the car in that cruise mode and you can run up to 40MPG to 43MPG on a flat road. This was formerly known as high ice mpg prior to 13b07 (where EV was capped below 63mph) but there is a weaker form of that mode post 13b07 where EV goes to 85mph. If you don't get it straight away, then do not fret, it takes time to understand the CMax and how to best use the EV and SOC management :victory: ps the ultimate hypermiling technique is pulse & glide on the freeway to max your MPG but all I will say is: BE PREPARED TO WORK but I can guarantee you, you won't be bored like the drone gas drivers.
  18. Phenomenal! So what are you saying? Another LONG trip 3000+ miles of REAL freeway and highways and you got 49.6 MPG while Consumer Report CMax drivers who loops a piddly circuit only managed *PIDDLY* 38MPG, huh? Who knew...how bad the Consumer Reports CMax drivers really are  :stirpot:
  19. Nice Snowstorm! So who is the evil twin here - you or SDM - all these long trips with GREAT MPGs! Highly skilled CMax drivers, for sure
  20. Drive it normal in the 1st month, get to know your car, how it accelerates, what the EV can or cannot do and play with it. Don't go the whole hog on hybrid driving, Pulse & Glide unless you owned a previous hybrid and know what you're doing. Slowly, implement little hybrid steps. Read up on this forum, lots of tips in the Fuel Mileage section. Learn to "feather" the pedal. Also, don't go so slow as to PO the rear driver. Good luck with it and enjoy the CMax :) PS and welcome
  21. Depends on SOC. On a low SOC, EV charging will go to about 2.5. On a medium SOC, 2 bar is about the limit. Anything above 3/4 SOC and almost peaking will mean 1.5 limit. Hey, as I posted in another thread, if you are running 80% SOC, feel free to go hard in the acceleration to leverage the battery to help you accelerate quickly and save the gas. Hope this helps.
  22. Guys, guys, guys...there are times to be aggressive and times not. Too long of a slow burn will hurt you, deliberately keeping a super high SOC with 1 bar burn in city will hurt you, climb up a 45* 5 mile grade at 65 mph will hurt you. A good aggressive action is when you have a high SOC (say you built this naturally), use it to accelerate to 5mph above the limit and let it coast, and kick in minimal EV. The acceleration will pull charge off the battery and save you gas and then glide down. Remember, once gas is burnt, its burnt but if you can leverage some battery in there to help with the acceleration, use it. Understand this and become CMax wise :skateboard:
  23. Ok ENOUGH - Cool it guys - be respectful or just go to youtube and watch some dumb cat videos and release your anger there. Seriously, NO ONE wants to see a p*ssing, personal attacks here and I don't want to clean up these spiteful, ugly posts. K. Both of you have been warned.
  24. Nice write up SDM! Enjoyed the writeup and most of all, the photos... :stirpot: I really scratch my head at those idjiots at Consumer Reports who ONLY MANAGE 38MPG on their stupid piddly circuit while you went on this mega LONG trip and blew their MPG numbers apart with :happy feet: 45.6MPG and FULLY LOADED, AC, mountains, FWY speeds. Really does say a lot about the skills possessed by the CR drivers for sure, can't wait for them to break 300 miles a tank in their CMax (yes, thats right CR, I :lol2: at you). Rant over, I feel much better now. :flyaway:
  25. Or jus leave the middle one on and the top and lower off. All around benefit, imho.
