How to stress test hybrid batteries
darrelld replied to AgentCMAX's topic in Articles, News & Reviews
I have the A/C on when I am in the car and that would not be an issue. What I could see as an issue is what Leaf owners experienced in Arizona. The owner would park and charge in the 100+ degree heat causing the battery chemisty to fatigue sooner than in cooler conditions. http://gas2.org/2012/09/25/nissan-responds-to-leaf-owners-battery-woes/ I followed this story closely when deciding to go C-Max or C-Max Energi. -

What happens when you plug in at the local Whole Foods and the outside temp is 110 degrees. I have seen my dash temp read 120+ in July-August. -
How to stress test hybrid batteries

Concern for battery endurance in extreme heat is the only reason I didn't buy the C-Max Energi. Summer of 2011 we had 47 days of heat exceeding 100 degrees. http://dallas.about.com/od/neighborhoods/qt/Dfw-Weather-Tuesday-40-Straight-Days-Of-100-Degrees-Or-Higher-And-Counting.htm -
I hit 29 mpg this am with air temp at 19 degrees and icy roads.

Every hybrid, Lexus models, I have ever driven is like that. Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is worse. My TDI usually only drops 2-3 mpg under those conditions and I already exceed city EPA by 8 mpg.
-
I would take the buy back as soon as possible. What do you plan to replace with?

Wall Street Journal calls it a wagon. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324907204578187560383059762.html

My mileage dropped to 29 mpg this morning with the 19 degree temps, ice/snow on the road, 35 mph traffic, seat heaters on, rear defroster on high, climate control set to 70, and idling the C-Max to deice the windshield. I just don't understand how that could happen. :)

Finally able to switch from Mobile Version too.

You have never seen the Nav in a 2006 Lexus IS, the position in mine was a full block off my current position. If I was traveling east my position on the Lexus Nav would show my east travel but placed me on the adjacent east/west block moving east. Lexus finally issued a firmware update to fix it.

Consumer Reports EPA variation on Prius city mpg cited by Ford. http://www.greencarcongress.com/2012/12/cmax-20121215.html At Friday’s event unveiling the new Transit commercial vehicle family for North America (earlier post), Ford’s Raj Nair, group vice president global product development, spent some time addressing the issue of the large discrepancy between real-world fuel economy results for the C-MAX hybrid and its EPA fuel economy ratings—47 mpg (5.0 l/100km) city, highway and combined—earlier highlighted in detail by Consumer Reports. Basically, Ford is standing by the ratings as determined by the current testing protocols, Nair said, but added that “we absolutely agree with EPA that hybrids are far more variable in the test cycle compared to real world driving conditions in conventional vehicles. We are working closely with the agency to determine if any changes are needed for the industry relative to hybrid vehicle testing.

Definitely, hello neighbor.

MPGOMatic tests the C-Max Hybrid 0-60 with traction control on/off This confirms the numbers reported by TTAC.

Just spotted my first C-Max in Allen, white SEL with dealer tags.

C-Max Hybrid or C-Max Energi for model semantic differentiation sounds good. : )
-
Thanks for the update, you are getting about 4 mpg more than I do at those speeds. I noticed the C-Max Hybrid will provide some EV assist at slight road elevation changes but never go into full EV at speeds above 62 mph.
-
One thing I would like to know is what the Energi shows for mpg at 70 mph given you can run in EV mode up to 85 mph. Also how fast does the battery discharge at those speeds. Might be helpful to those who do mostly highway driving and provide them with a data point for a C-Max vs Energi decision.

I am keeping a close eye on this for Solar Maximum. http://prop.hfradio.org/ http://stereo.ssl.berkeley.edu/SDOpage.html Plan to escape to the nearest large scale Faraday Cage if anything unusual pops up. : ;) -
Congrats, got any trips planned?
