October sales update 11-04-2014 As noted earlier, prior month charts and tables will be eliminated from older posts, because each update includes prior month. EDIT:1962 Combined C-MAX Hybrid and Energi sales, up 10% over September 2014, though C-MAX Energi sales were down slightly from last month.

Did you contact Canadian transportation authorities? http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/motorvehiclesafety/menu.htm Of approximately 70,000 C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi vehicles sold to date, the United States National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) database has FIVE reports of loss of power with a Red triangle and 'Stop safely now' events for combined reports listed under C-MAX, C-MAX Hybrid, and C-MAX Energi: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchResults Date of Incident: 10/23/2014 NHTSA ID Number: 10651294 Date of Incident: 07/06/2014 NHTSA ID Number: 10633639 Date of Incident: 05/27/2014 NHTSA ID Number: 10597744 Date of Incident: 09/03/2013 NHTSA ID Number: 10541693 Date of Incident: 04/10/2013 NHTSA ID Number: 10508178 "Oh, but you don't know how scary it was..." In 1989 my pregnant wife and I were driving on the interstate in a 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera at 70 mph in the fast lane in moderate traffic. Without warning, the engine stopped and the 'Service Engine Soon' light illuminated. No power, no power steering, no power brakes, so I calmly signaled to pull into the slow lane, steered to the right paved shoulder of the road, braked until the car stopped rolling, and turned on the emergency flashers, all without incident. The car would not restart. This was before we had cell phones, so we hailed a passing sheriff's deputy on CB radio who called for a tow vehicle. Mechanic's final diagnosis: The engine computer had quit functioning without warning, and needed to be replaced. So in spite of your continued ranting all over these forums, no deaths and no injuries have been reported to the NHTSA because of this problem. You face a much larger chance of dying from heart disease or cancer (1 in 7), lower respiratory disease (1 in 29) or self harm (1 in 107) than in any vehicle accident (1 in 112). http://www.nsc.org/news_resources/injury_and_death_statistics/Documents/2014-Injury-Facts-43.pdf. Your continued hysteria is unbecoming.

Absolute :airquote: coolest car was my VW Cabriolet with the top down in 30-degree weather. ;)

Is the C-MAX smart enough to know about Daylight Saving Time? Couldn't find anything in the 2013 owner manual. It's that time of year again! Since 2006, much of the US and Canada observes Daylight Saving Time from the second Sunday in March until the first Sunday in November. http://www.cute-calendar.com/category/daylight-saving-time.html In a few hours, it will be the first Sunday in November, and we "Fall Back" at 2AM/3AM. In about 4 months, on the second Sunday of March, most of us will "Spring Forward" BURNING QUESTIONS: Where did you PUT all that daylight you've saved the last 8 months? Do you bring it out now when it gets dark an hour earlier? (I left the title generic enough that anyone searching for it in Spring or Fall will (hopefully) find this thread rather than have to start a new one.) Having lived in 'timeless' Indiana during the 30-years prior to 2007 when we never changed the clocks, I think changing the clocks is a needless waste of time!

Saw a Sterling Gray C-MAX on a cross street to SR 26 (South St) in Lafayette, IN on Friday 10-31-2014 around 5 pm.

Yes. Engineering Test Mode (ETM) is activated on the SE by holding down the left-steering-wheel OK button when turning the car from off to ignition-on and holding OK until the ETM display begins (a yellow ET is displayed in the upper left corner) of the left-hand screen). It is not necessary to actually turn the key another notch to "start" the vehicle. The only way to turn off ET is to turn the key off. Once activated, ET will continue on the left-hand display once the vehicle is started, covering the usual left-hand trip odometers, MyView, and Power screens.

The average temperature in Minneapolis MN is 45.4 degrees. Be sure to dress for that precise temperature when you visit there in January or July. Average is only one measure, and not a good one to analyze the data in this specific case.

Enable the on-board Diagnostics screens to view the 12-volt battery voltage by holding the left steering-wheel OK button when you turn on the ignition. Use the up and down arrow buttons to scroll through the screens. To exit Diagnostic screens, turn off the car. Diagnostics screens do cover the usual left-side displays. If you start the car ("Ready-to-Drive") the display will show 13+ volts.

Strange, long wooooo sound at steady speeds, ICE on
kostby replied to Alex Sams's topic in 2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid
Dave Greene above posted in message 29 of this thread that replacing the fuel pump cured the noise: http://fordcmaxhybridforum.com/topic/3457-strange-long-wooooo-sound-at-steady-speeds-ice-on/?p=43287 But now you should probably wait until after Halloween! -
Welcome! Great results on the very first tank! Next time, be sure to snap a pic of the Trip Display screen when you fill up, and post it in the 600+ mile club thread so you get added to the 'Honor Roll'.

Just installed my Wolverine Model 9 Preheater today. https://www.wolverineheater.com/Model-9-p/9.0.htm I removed the Torx T-30 fasteners at the front and sides of the belly cover, which gave enough access to install it without removing the back fasteners. (And my arms aren't that long!) As Paul noted, the oil pan is cast, finned, ribbed, contorted, and the biggest installation PAIN is locating the SINGLE 3" diameter spot where the heater will fit securely! I also wanted to avoid snaking the cord toward either the oil filter or the drain plug, on the vertical surface on the back side of the oil pan. I seriously thought that maybe the 6"x1.5" pad (Model 9.1) might work better, but there really is no flat place that long. Looking at the engine oil pan and filter from the front of the car. Transaxle to the right. Black edge of the under-bumper cover is above, belly pan is dropped but still attached by the back Torx connectors. Note the nice rusty ding in the original factory-installed oil filter where apparently they banged it on something while installing the engine at the factory! Holding the pad for size comparison. Placing the pad with one finger in the ONLY flat spot on the surface of the cast oil pan where it will fit! There are some cast numbers and a FOMOCO logo under the 'back' edge of the pad, but 90% of the pad will be on the flat smooth area of the pan, so I judged that 10% would not be a problem if I got enough silicone sealant on the back edge. Following instructions, you prepare the surface with an alcohol-based cleaner, remove the paper backing, plug-in to heat the pad briefly (3-5 sec), apply to the cleaned surface, squeegee, heat a bit longer (5-10 sec), squeegee, heat (5-10 sec) once more, squeegee the final time, then apply the blue silicone sealant (included) to the edges to ensure a waterproof seal when cured. I've secured the power cord with a couple of wire ties (one included). For now, I'll store it under the hood, instead of poking it out through the grille. The car will always be garaged. Having the hood up while heating will help remind me NOT to drive off without unplugging. Now to wait 24 hours for the adhesive and sealant to cure, and try it out. Low temps may get to the 20's this weekend, so I procrastinated just long enough.

Apparently the environmentally-friendly, energy-conscious, hypermiling car thieves haven't discovered the C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi yet. ;)

That ($5.99) is what I paid with a Meritline email-subscriber coupon code (code likely valid 10-27-2014 only), and free shipping with no minimum purchase.

I just ordered one of these from Meritline.com: "LCD Cigarette Lighter Electric Voltage Meter Monitor Tester for Auto Car Battery" http://www.meritline.com/lcd-cigarette-lighter-voltage-meter-car-battery---p-120662.aspx The (Chinese-to-English-without-anti-tobacco-lobby-political-correctness-filter-applied) item description indicates that "engine off" it measures "greater than 12 volts", but that is at odds with the last spec saying it measures from 8 to 30 volts +/- 1.2%. The illustration clearly shows 11.9 volts on the display. I subscribe to Meritline emails, so I had a coupon reducing the cost a bit further, but even for $8.90, it was worth trying it out. Of course, if I leave it plugged in all the time, it will be "the cause" of 12-volt battery drain. There are no reviews (not always a good sign) but if it works, it might provide a quick check of the 12-volt battery voltage, faster than going through the left-screen Diagnostics menu or hooking up a my auto-ranging volt meter. If not, $9 won't break the bank. No, just like a 12-volt jump start battery, this is not a substitute for Ford fixing the issue(s) leading to dead 12-volt batteries (primarily on early production 2013 SE's with 200A or 201A). It's simply another ounce of prevention...

Welcome! Always insist the dealer provide a CarFax, AutoCheck, or similar comprehensive report of any vehicle's title and accident history. http://www.edmunds.com/car-buying/which-vehicle-history-report-is-right-for-you.html Review every part of the full report fully with the dealer before signing anything. Multiple previous owners could indicate an unreliable car. Poorly repaired but hidden accident damage (behind a new bumper cover) could come back to haunt you later. With a price that low, it's possible the car began life as a rental, perhaps originally titled in Florida. I came across many such used units in the midwest during my search for our C-MAX. (We eventually purchased a new 2013 SE in March 2014) If you have the full VIN number, you can enter it online to see the Monroney Window Sticker with all the options. Simply copy the following link and paste it into a new window in your browser. Then replace the VIN number (after vin= in the link below) with your actual VIN number in the link, and refresh the browser window again. Probably only the last 6 numerals are different. http://services.forddirect.fordvehicles.com/inventory/WindowSticker.pdf?vin=1FADP5BU3DL520178 Former rental cars often have a SPECIAL ORDER designation, and may include daytime running lights, as illustrated in the Monroney sticker link I provided.

2014 C-Max Hybrid commercial in the dessert
kostby replied to salsaguy's topic in Articles, News & Reviews
Saw the C-MAX "Desert" ad while watching NFL football this evening, so it must be a national Ford commercial. Impressive! Captures the essence of the product beautifully, letting the images do most of the talking. It's a positive sign that Ford has regained confidence in the product. I hope it's also a sign that Ford will now undertake a concerted effort to educate (re-educate?) many more dealer salespeople about how to sell the product, and service department personnel about how to diagnose and remedy the remaining ones that continue to be troublesome. @Salsaguy, I'm not poking fun at your misspelling, because I do it all the time, often confounding even my spell checker and Google: I DO wish there were C-MAX Dessert Editions with a few added flavors/colors: "Now available in Vanilla Ice Cream, Blue Candy, Cherry, Dark Chocolate, Lemon Meringue, and Pumpkin Pie. Also available 'A la mode' two-tone paint treatment with a white top." Mmmmm. Gotta go have dessert now! -
2.99 gallons indicated for a ~150 mile round trip to my alma mater and back this evening. Interstate and state highways traveled near the posted speed limits 55mph to 70mph.

You misremember: The "Ford Explorer" tire issues were primarily caused by UNDERINFLATED tires and often OVERLOADED vehicles that caused the tires to overheat, leading to tread separation and blowouts. It was not an issue of blowouts due to overinflation. The issue also led to the mandatory adoption of Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) by manufacturers: http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/rulings/tpmsfinalrule.6/tpmsfinalrule.6.html Part of the problem WAS that Ford's recommendation on the doorjamb sticker (26 psi) was TOO LOW, NOT TOO HIGH. If you didn't check your tire pressure religiously, after a few months of neglect and lowered pressure due to decreasing outdoor temperatures, 26 psi could easily become 20 psi... A recall notice was issued on September 1, 2000 (and updated several times in 2001) for 14 million P235/75 R15 Firestone ATX and ATX II tires (from 1991 to 2001) and all P235/75R15 Wilderness AT tires (from 1996 to 2001) manufactured at Firestone's Decatur, IL plant. Excerpt from the NHTSA notice (boldface italic emphasis added): NOTE: If you have a Ford Explorer, Mercury Mountaineer, or Mazda Navajo equipped with tires in the P235 tire size (see question 2 above to determine what size you have on your vehicle), Firestone recommends that you increase the air pressure in the tires to 30 psi cold and maintain it at that level. Ford, as noted on the identification sticker mentioned above, recommends 26 psi for the Explorer, Mercury Mountaineer, and the Mazda Navajo with the P235 tire size. Ford now approves that a range of 26-30 psi as appropriate for these vehicles. Consumers who own Explorers with other tire sizes, such as the P255 or P225, should follow the recommendations of the manufacturer on the identification sticker in the vehicle. Full text of the NHTSA recall notice here: SUMMARY: OVERINFLATION of COLD tires beyond the tire manufacturer's sidewall-indicated maximum pressure is NEVER recommended for average drivers with normally-loaded vehicles in normal driving conditions. Taking it to track day? You're on your own. Inflating COLD tires ABOVE the Vehicle Manufacturer's recommendation, AND UP TO, BUT NOT EXCEEDING, the maximum indicated pressure on the sidewall IS NOT HARMFUL for average drivers with normally-loaded vehicles in normal driving conditions. Racing in Baja? Driving at sustained speeds above 120mph? Carrying 3 tons of cement? You're on your own. I DO NOT IMPLY that ride comfort, handling, miles-per-gallon, and tread wear won't be affected by increasing tire inflation pressure up to the tire-manufacturer recommended maximum on the sidewall. In our case, increasing cold inflation pressures from 35psi to 45psi cold did not affect ride comfort negatively, improved handling moderately, improved the mpgs a little, and it's still too early to tell about tread wear because the car only has 3400 miles on it.

Hyundai has that covered, actually: http://walkingdeadchopshop.com

Our fully armored, lead-lined C-MAX Hybrid milspec Special Ops edition with Equipment Group 403A (weapons systems upgrades) only gets 16 gallons per mile now, but hey, that's just a tiny little inconvenience compared with the inevitable threat of simultaneous terrorist insurrection, nuclear attack, and sharknado here in the heartland within the next 90 minutes. And, we should qualify for the 0.6 Mile Club with a little fuel to spare, Ger.

Windows rolled themselves today
kostby replied to AMSDPS's topic in Alarms, Keyless Entry, Locks & Remote Start
I can explain how I use the Hybrid SE version (in other words, lock and unlock buttons on a physical key fob top, with no Intelligent Access fob or pushbutton start): Car is parked outside for hours on a hot, sunny day. As you approach the car, press to unlock and hold the 'unlock' button so all the windows roll down. Heat trapped inside begins to escape before anyone opens a door. -
On a related note, because they're assembled in the same Michigan plant as the C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi, Ford just reduced the base price of the 2014 and 2015 Focus Electrics to $29,995. http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2014/10/20/ford-focus-electric-price-slash/17626501/ Here's a Monroney window sticker illustrating the new price: http://www.inventory.ford.com/services/inventory/WindowSticker.pdf?vin=1FADP3R44EL259686 Ford has sold just 1534 Focus Electrics during January through September 2014, the 9th best-selling EV or Plug-in Hybrid, according to the Inside EV monthly scorecard: http://insideevs.com/monthly-plug-in-sales-scorecard/

The C-MAX recall you cited is not for potentially explosive airbag inflators, but for a Control Module (essentially, a computer circuit board) controlling air-bag deployment. (There are better sources for this info, but this is the first one I found): http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2014/09/26/ford-lincoln-mkz-fusion-cmax-airbag-seatbelt-defect/16258897/
