  1. cmaxmd I changed my reply to your item 3 to I don't know. I realized I had misread your item 3 to begin with.
  2. For us no to 1 and no to 3. I don't know about 2 or 3. I have not figured out what this update accomplished.
  3. I don't like that they took away a lifetime figure that was in the early vehicles. I think telling you miles driven in all electric mode would be a nice feature. If the Energi provided this figure then it could be subtracted from total miles to get miles in hybrid mode which could then be divided by gallons of gas used to get a hybrid mode MPG figure for an Energi that could be compared to what drivers of non-plug-in C-Max are achieving.
  4. Maybe it was the nasty language he used or him also saying "I'm out of here" and "BYE" in the post that contained the nasty language (in the "Why hybrids often deliver lower mpg than advertised" thread). With respect to using MPGe for a non-plug-in hybrid - I would not say it is delusional, I would just say it is wrong because the only way to add "external" energy to a non-plug-in hybrid is by putting gas in the tank - so all that is needed and appropriate in the denominator (i.e., after the P for per) is G for gallons of gas. I don't have an Energi so I don't know all the ways in which it calculates and displays info on miles traveled per "external" energy added to the vehicle. For a plug-in-hybrid like the Energi there are two ways to add "external" energy - [a] putting gas in the tank and putting energy into the battery by plugging the car into a power source (charger). I think there are three ways to look at miles per "external" energy input for a plug-in-hybrid. [1] Looking at the car operating in electric only mode. In this case, the Ge is based on a calculation which converts electrical energy put into the battery by plug-in charging into equivalent gallons of gasoline. I think an example of this is the high (100+) number on the sticker on the Energi. [2] Looking at the car operating in both electric only mode and hybrid (i.e., combination of gas and EV) mode and including gasoline usage plus energy put into the battery by plug-in charging (equivalent gallons of gasoline) in the denominator. I don't know how/if the Energi reports this and whether it is also referred to as MPGe. [3] Looking at the car operating in both electric only mode and hybrid (i.e., combination of gas and EV) mode and taking only gasoline usage into account in the denominator. I don't know how/if the Energi reports this, but it would be easy for the owner to track this manually, on a spreadsheet or in Fuelly (or similar application). I have seen posters on this forum do this, for example: [paraphrasing] "Most of my driving with my Energi is done in all electric mode. I only buy gas once a month. I drive 20 miles to work and 20 miles home. My employer lets me plug-in while I am in the office. Last month I drove 1,600 miles and only used 12 gallons of gas. My MPG for the month was 1600/12 = 133. Woo-hoo!!! [original poster inserts dancing hot dog and other happy emoticons here]" Another way to look at the month described above [per item 2 above] is that the 1,600 miles consisted of 1,000 electric only mode miles and 600 hybrid mode miles. The 1,000 electric only mode miles would have been made possible by plug-in charging that put electrical energy equivalent to about 10 gallons of gas into the battery. So total "fuel usage" was the equivalent of 22 gallons of gas [12 gallons of gas plus 10 gallons of gas equivalent. This gives an equivalent MPG of 1600/22 = 72.7, not too shabby!!! [original poster inserts dancing hot dog and other happy emoticons here] Note that in hybrid mode this driver got 600 miles on 12 gallons of gas which is 50 MPG - also not too shabby. I would welcome a reply from an Energi owner which explains all of the ways the Energi displays info, what else can be calculated and what can't be calculated from the info displayed.
  5. Way to go and thanks for adding your location - now we know what the buffalo means in buffalofrenchy and what kind of winter climate you will be operating in.
  6. Chill out dude. You are in the wrong thread. Your 7:15pm message in the thread titled "It's MPGe folks, not MPG for a hybrid!" has h-e-double hockey sticks in it and it is still there.
  7. Are you perhaps looking for a post you made to the thread titled "It's MPGe folks, not MPG for a hybrid!" ? You have posts there at 7:10pm and 7:15PM.
  8. For the C-Max, MPGe is only applicable to/meaningful for the Energi.
  9. Robert - Welcome to the forum. I'm not sure if you are driving a plug-in (Energi) or a non-plug-in. I have a non-plug-in SEL. I reset my trip 1 odometer every time I get gas. See photo below. My car has traveled 299.1 total miles since the last time I got gas. The 159.4 EV miles are included in the 299.1 total miles. I have used 6.31 gallons of fuel since my last fill-up. My fuel economy since my last fill up is 299.1/6.31 = 47.3 mpg. [i wish I had gone 458.5 (299.1 + 159.4 = 458.5) miles on those 6.31 gallons of fuel for an mpg of 458.5/6.31 = 72.7, but alas I have only gone 299.1 miles on those 6.31 gallons. I double checked this by comparing my current odometer reading of 18266.4 to the odometer reading last time I got gas which was 17967.3, a difference of 299.1 miles]
  10. Dragnet! In that case Laurel, "Jus the facts ma'am. Jus the facts." Bonanza - Was Lorne Greene the first Canadian to star on a US tv show?
  11. Is this for the Energi only? If so, how about a similar app for the hybrids?
  12. Pardon my ignorance, but what is a "lab scope" and what can it monitor?
  13. Atlanta man shatters coast-to-coast 'Cannonball Run' speed record http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/31/us/new-york-los-angeles-cannonball-speed-record/ My favorite parts of the article: "He went into preparation mode about 18 months ago and chose a Mercedes CL55 AMG with 115,000 miles for the journey. The Benz's gas tank was only 23 gallons, so he added two 22-gallon tanks in the trunk, upping his range to about 800 miles. The spare tire had to go in the backseat with his spotter, Dan Huang, a student at Georgia Tech, Bolian's alma mater." and "The unnamed tracking company says the Benz pulled into the Portofino Hotel and Marina in Redondo Beach, California, at 11:46 p.m. on October 20 after driving 2,803 miles. The total time: 28 hours, 50 minutes and about 30 seconds. . . When they were moving, which, impressively, was all but 46 minutes of the trip, they were averaging around 100 mph. Their total average was 98 mph, and their top speed was 158 mph, according to an onboard tracking device."
  14. from the "Windows rolled themselves today thread": from this ["Battery dead"] thread: Dr. Diesel - You have inspired me to come up with a simple experiment that you can participate in. For one month, or longer if you choose, you swap your "works great" C-Max with someone else's "lemony" C-Max. [Extra credit to you if the "lemony" C-Max is dead and resisting resuscitation at the start of the experiment.] From time to time during the swap, you report back to us on how the "lemony" C-Max is working for you and on your happiness level, and the other owner reports back to us on how your "works great" C-Max is working for them and whether their frown has been turned upside down.
  15. SDM - I don't use the Auto setting. I do sometimes see unusual behavior of the climate system. [re the Auto setting - I think Auto is turned on when the Auto button is pressed and then "AUTO" appears on the small climate screen. Pressing other buttons, e.g., one of the air directional buttons such as the one that directs air to the floor, makes "AUTO" disappear from the small climate screen which I have always presumed was an indication that Auto is turned off. Am I missing something about turning Auto off?]
  16. Are you friends with the Swedish Chef? He also drives a Fjord.
  17. Frank - Not sure if you were responding to my climate system comment - I never use AUTO climate, but I do observe occasional odd (at least to me) behavior of the climate system. Dave
  18. How does the heater work on the Energi when you are driving in EV mode in cold weather? Maybe people were commenting on the heat quality or that it cut into EV range? I do find some quirks in the climate system on my SEL hybrid. Things like the system not coming back on at the previous settings when I restart the car. The fan coming on full blast when it was previously set at a low setting. Today we needed a little heat at 7am by 11:30am it was sunny and 70 degrees. The sun warmed up the interior of the car and when we turned the car on it decided to run the AC even though we didn't want it or need it. I have seen this happen before even when the interior of the car wasn't that warm. It's quirky but not a significant problem.
  19. They classify the C-Max (both the hybrid and the Energi) as wagons. They give the C-Max an overall score of 83 and say the best wagon got an 88 and the worst wagon got 62. Reliability is discussed separately . As noted in my previous post, they explain their "Reliability" ratings system at http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/2012/04/reliability-histories/index.htm For the Energi they say "much worse than average" reliability. [but remember they also say, "Models that score a are not necessarily unreliable, but have a higher rate of problems than the average model. Similarly, models that score are not necessarily problem-free, but had relatively few problems compared with other models.] They give the top rating to 8 categories. They downgrade one notch from the best possible rating on fuel system, brakes, paint/trim, squeaks/rattles and power equipment. They downgrade three notches on climate system. They downgrade four notches (worst possible rating) on electrical system, body hardware and audio system. For the hybrid they say "much worse than average" reliability. They give the top rating to 10 categories. They downgrade one notch from the best possible rating on fuel system, paint/trim, and squeaks/rattles. They downgrade two notches on body hardware and power equipment. They downgrade three notches on electrical system. They downgrade four notches (worst possible rating) on audio system. They also say. "Based on the latest survey, we expect reliability of new (Energi) models will be 226% below average." and "Based on the latest survey, we expect reliability of new (hybrid) models will be 143% below average." I have no idea what this is supposed to mean.
  20. See http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/2012/04/reliability-histories/index.htm for CR's explanation of its "Reliability" ratings system. Note they say "Models that score a are not necessarily unreliable, but have a higher rate of problems than the average model. Similarly, models that score are not necessarily problem-free, but had relatively few problems compared with other models." They also say, "Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below." Maybe I didn't read the survey carefully enough when I was filling out, but, for example, I am sure I marked down the problem I had with the auto tailgate feature even though I wouldn't call that a serious problem as described above.
  21. Thanks for posting. This kind of driving could also explain their poor mpg results :)
  22. I bought a 6 foot length of foam pipe insulation (for 1" diameter pipe). I cut off two pieces - a longer section for the passenger side and a shorter section for the driver side - and put them in place for tonight's leaf and pine needle drop. Will report back on the results soon.
