Broken spring at 33K
obob replied to reedmother's topic in Brakes, Chassis, Park Assist & Suspension
cars.com shows 2016 SELs starting at 22K. They may be even cheaper in a couple of months when the 2017s come out. https://www.cars.com/for-sale/searchresults.action?zc=19008&rd=99999&stkTypId=28880&mdId=49085&trId=24993&mkId=20015&sf1Nm=price&sf1Dir=ASC&sf2Nm=location&sf2Dir=ASC&page=1&perPage=50&sortFeatures=buryUsedLowPrice&sortFeatures=buryNewLowPrice&sortFeatures=buryLowPriceOlderThanSix&sortFeatures=buryNoPrice&searchSource=SORT -
"Our slow-cooker is a large 5-quart brand with a low cooking power of 180 watts and a high cooking power of 250 watts." from http://www.cookingmanager.com/slow-cookers-energy-efficient/ (there are lower wattage ones but that might been way to slow.) As I recall, the max output is 150 watts on the inverter in the car. My experience using a back massager is that it doesn't much to trip the circuit breaker, though it is possible I just have a bad one. Like even though a device is rated at say 100 watts it may have a surge or something that trips the breaker. (My dealer never did squat about it when I mentioned it. I suspect that somehow dealers get points or money for not doing stuff.) Perhaps a higher capacity inverter wired directly to the battery could work. That would open all sorts of possibilities. To quote ptjones "YUM!"

Broken spring at 33K

You might want to know this when talking to the Ford dealer. As far as i know, no one on the message board reported a broken spring. I hope you post how that interaction goes. Until I read your post I would have guessed it would be covered by the warranty, as long as it is within the 3 years. From http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/car-servicing-repair/coil-springs-breaking.html "There are myths suggesting that the problem is caused by 'cheaper metal', speed humps or over-loading but the simple fact is that springs are lighter, thinner and don't cope as well with salt and rust ... Mechanical components are being re-specified so they will still do the job but may have less spare capacity. This has included specifying lighter, more highly stressed springs." -
So it seems like the energi could be better than the hybrid in the winter because the extra battery can be used for heating which is very inefficient for the ICE to do, unless on the highway. That could be the good reason for me to have an energi. A warm car in the winter. In the winter I usually keep the car on the cool side to avoid the agony of lower mpg.

Welcome. If you do that, it would be great to start a thread about it. I am not sure why you say the forum seems to be dead. There are new posts added pretty frequently. If your "new content" does not work, you might want to try playing with the stuff on the left side of the new content screen - by content type, by time period, other.

What I have been doing with longer substantial hills is speed up a little before the hill and then a 2 bar burn up the hill which means slowing down. My sense which I have not proved is that it is better to burn a little extra wind resistance going down to get the hill over quicker, rather than lug up a long hill at a slower speed. This allows for more "slowing down." Your thoughts on speed and ICE are interesting and I will have to think about them. Perhaps you can expand on that. I tend to tap the "gas" pedal when I first start out to kind of warm the engine up, but go slowly so to be accelerating on EV. (at start up a tap starts engine but is moved with the HVB and electric motor) For if the first pedal push requires good acceleration it seems very costly.

If you are going to buy it there are dealers that discount online. That's how I got mine. http://fordcmaxhybridforum.com/topic/2330-purchase-an-extended-warranty/?p=23323

215/65/17... will it fit. will it increase mpgs?
obob replied to jkaminsky's topic in Wheels & Tires
Measuring the space in wheel wells needs to compensate for suspension. As I recall people use only the snow chains that are for reduced clearance and people have had good experience with them. And I don't think 10cm is going to make that much difference in mileage, and it might be worse if you do not get a Low Rolling Resistance tire as good as the OEM Michelins. I would think the ride would be really much better on bumps but mooshier on the steering. Why are you interested in that ? -
http://fordcmaxenergiforum.com/ is a good place to post c-max energi specific messages.

There is a thread around here that describes four C-Maxes which where monitored to the max by some government agency. As I recall, after about 100K miles there was around a 5% reduction in some HVB measurement. I do believe leaving the battery overnight at a lower state of charge will increase longevity, it probably isn't going to be that big a deal. (There is also a thread about the reasons for that.) I also noticed on ebay C-Max hybrid HV Batteries for sale in the 500-600 range. They don't seem to be wearing out as fast as spares are becoming available. (Though people do buy used batteries to take apart)

What does POC stand for in your post ?

http://www.fordparts.com/Commerce/PartDetail.aspx?n=6YLiDeXwiM6gbahIM7SREg%3d%3d&id=388654604&m=44&search=true&year=2013&make=Ford&model=C-Max So the C-Max battery does not appear to be a deep cycle battery (wheelchair type battery). Looking at the picture it seems to have 390 cold cracking amps which assuming the HVB starts a C-Max is not necessary. My Dad's electric scooter battery is about that size and 35 amps but it runs a scooter a really really long time. A battery about that size that starts a riding mower runs a scooter for about 45 seconds though it has lots more amps (cold cracking amps). There may be advantages to using a deep cycle battery in the C-Max. Having jumped my car when the battery had been dead, I do believe the car is started with the HVB. (Though this implies that if the HVB is dead, the car will not start. But will charging the 12V battery charge the HVB ? ) (By the way, it is around 30 lbs.)

I have that same feeling with my dealer. Creepy. I wonder what kind of 12volt battery we have. Since it doesn't have to turn the engine, is it more like a wheelchair battery, steady low amperage over a long period of time.

That good to know in case of an accident and I am concerned about a fire starting.

And that's part of why I have the extended warranty

The air condition is on recirculate ? ( I was in Houston in August when I was in my 20s. Sat out and ate lunch at the University of Houston - about 40 minutes. Got super ill really quick. It gets really hot out there. ) -
Just to be more clear from homestead's link http://finance.yahoo.com/news/ford-recalls-830k-vehicles-fix-130748913.html "States included are Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, Oregon and Washington."

I wonder if Ford has started to go into full phase damage control with the 2013 transmissions, looking for excuses to not replace the trans. Though I suspect that case of towing cancelling out the warranty could be changed. Things often so depend on which person you get to handle a situation. I am thinking some significant percent of the people first denied would just give up, and that could be Ford's thinking. It might be worthwhile to Ford to have a transmission team which could swap out a trans in 1/3 the time or less of a person that has done like 0 or 1 of them, even if they are consultants rather than Ford employees. And this is not just a Ford thing. I had a friend with a Saturn engine that went bad at 70K like a bunch of other engines, but it was not under warranty because of over so may years. I had a similar thing with my Toyota Sienna transmission that had a design problem and was not fixed because of time. But really expensive problems are worth looking for ways to not give fairness. And it may be that towing does speed up the trans problem. Though there is no disclaimer about towing invalidating warranty as far as I know. I personally have no plans to change my trans oil.

In Canada it is against the law to be in park with the engine on for more than something like three minutes. https://www.thestar.com/news/city_hall/2010/04/26/a_minutes_idle_could_cost_you_125.html

Some of my thinking. My experience with SYNC is when I have had a problem the dealer would update the software and if that fixed it good, otherwise live with it. When I first bought the car my phone did not work. My solution ended up buying a new phone. An experience playing mp3s was handled in a similar way, but I was shown a work around. I don't really think Ford supported that software any more than fixing the really really bad stuff. The problem is that it is really Microsoft's software and it can be hard to modified and fix someone else's software(and bottomless pit expensive unless you have really smart programmers). Ford's solution with the version in the 2016's is dump Microsoft (http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1101699_fords-sync-3-the-good-the-bad-the-ugly). It was kind of a damage control situation. I suspect the battery problems with the 2013 SE may be related to the out of controlness of SYNC. (SYNC is kind of a version of MFT for the cheaper sound system)
